several inches of snow coming across the sierra nevada. i think they've got more to come. >> we've got some more rain drops coming our way to out toward donner summit. yes, he'll snow packed along the sides of the road. the roadways are open and clear. so if you want to sneak up there and enjoy some of that fresh, almost spring-like powder was a good time to do it the next couple of days. but things are going to the storm system kind of winding down now and you watch the skies begin to clear out very nicely. if you're planning to travel up there the next a couple days looking good. although on thursday, saint paddy's day, there's a chance we could see a couple of snowflakes across some of the higher peaks there. so be prepared for that. if you're traveling in that direction and then over the weekend, a much more significant storm system moving in. you see it there. and that is going to be a widespread event. a lot of rain, i think across much of california and a whole lot more snow in the high sierra nevada. so next couple days, here we go

his first snowpack is in the sierra snow is about to be really kicking up here in the sierra for the the day today on into tomorrow. well, we're winding things down in the bay area. now we have what is cloudy skies overhead in san francisco? san jose. you just now over the past hour started to tap into your rainfall, which is working its way through mostly light to moderate showers this morning. already starting to things, see things drying out for san francisco in the east bay and you've already dried out across the north bay after your early morning overnight showers last night. this year, though, as we've noted, is just about to kick things up a notch. you are seeing more and more blue up there in the sierra, the central valley in the midst of rain. snow on the grapevine and showers all the grapevine and showers all the way through southern see this. but it's not a huge punch of rainfall. yesterday's rain brought by that first low this next week low pushing through today, resulting in our morning showers that we are in the midst of that will be pushing out. and after this, it's al

snow in the sierra. but what we're seeing in the bay is a quieter forecast for the rest of the day. mostly cloudy skies leading to partly cloudy conditions. the later in the day we get spots of sunshine. breaking through the low grade. we will see a stray thunderstorm or 2 popping up in the central valley later on. but i'm not anticipating that potential is much for the bay tomorrow. a nice and sunny one. it stays relatively cool highs mostly still in the 60's. come thursday, another weak disturbance tries to offer us some rainfall that should fizzle out by the time. it reaches us, though, and really just looking at the potential of showers along the north coast to the north of the bay area. we are in the midst of some advisories near the coastline due to some very strong north westerly swell. this is really pushing up some waves. watch out for some sneaker waves as well as a dangerous rip current out there along the coastline. advice is just to keep it further away from the ocean. if you areeheading out

if you do have plans to go to the sierra this weekend. be prepared for the next 24 to 36 hours dealing with that snow there and the levels are dropping. we have a system that is working its way over towards southern california, but we have another wave. that is north of us, and that is what is going to bring us that next shot at some rain. meanwhile snow levels started right about 6000 ft. now to about 4000 ft and expected to drop down about 2000 ft. by tomorrow morning, so a very cold system. here's a look at that system that will continue to move south and as it does, it's going to bring us a shot at some rain looks like towards the evening hours. here's the future cast models start being it for you at nine o'clock this evening, where we have their north bay, with some scattered shower activity along the coastline as well, maybe over san francisco. and then by 10 11 o'clock, it's into the central bay by 11 o'clock midnight. it's into the south bay. so our folks that will be out this evening rain gear. perhaps a wise idea. here's a look

nevada bay area as well as the sierra dry out come sunday. going to be a beautiful first day of spring on sunday. and after that light rainfall in the bay area should see some really nice clear skies will be the cherry on top of it. a 10th to a quarter of an inch of rain in the bay. significant only because we've seen such a little rain since the start of january. this is going to be one of the biggest rains we've had since december, which is not saying that much considering how dry we've been 50's and 60's towards the coast 60's and 70's for your daytime highs near the bay shore as well as further inland south bay. temperatures, low 70's for much of the santa clara valley, upper 60's to low 70's across the east bay, oakland and san leandro at 66 north bay. daytime highs valais how at 67 in antioch are very warm. a spot at 73 degrees today. tomorrow's temperatures from those low 70's that our warmest today to just the upper 50's tomorrow. that's a change of pace. that cold front really are rushing in some cool air as well as that rainfall alo

average in the south 173 so for all of the sierra, we were at 160% of average snowfall. of course this was after the record snows we had in the earlier part of the year. that was then. this is now. about 55% in the north sierra and 58 and 55% and overall we have come down to just two thirds of average snowfall in the sierra and it is getting late in the season and not much prospect for us to pick up much snow chronologically and we don't get that kind of snow until it stops snowing and here in the near term with nothing but clear skies here is monday afternoon and it will be sunday before it gets sunny and tuesday and tuesday evening, it is clear skies the next two days. by the way, this heightened pressure is building up and this is a low that created the wind we have a few days ago. so we did have the wind and a few sprinkles. no big deal. but then it goes over the rockies and into the midwest and it created all of those thunderstorms that pulled the moisture up from the gulf and created the tornadoes that killed seven people that juliet was just talking about. and if

the latest sierra snow survey was a chilling one for state water managers. andrea has those results. >> things are looking worry some after the driest january and february in over 100 years. at phillip station the news about the sierra snow pack was not encouraging after a dry start to 2022. >> the snow pack is the same snow that fell in december. there hasn't been much since. >> from the satellite the change on the ground is obvious. just look at the difference of snow coverage on the sierra nevada between the two images. at phillip station recorded snow depth was 35 inches. 16 inches of that was water content. >> since it hasn't snowed in nearly two months with the only snow coming later this week. we are well below normal conditions. >> the games of october and december have all been wiped out by the high pressure system parked in the pacific. keeping any storms from unleashing precipitation. >> as the world continues to warm. we are seeing average conditions become more rare. precipitation is moving toward extremes. >> that was andrea reporting. the depa

does that mean snow in the sierra?our weekend forecast. >> it's going to be really nice to see snow coming down. you want to get there today because tomorrow the roads are going to be pretty hazardous driving through the sierra. as we take a look at our palisades forecast, winter weather advisories up from 8:00 a.m. until 11:00 p.m. and we are ing to see thatw coming down throughoue day. they've got a lot of lifts and runs open. if you're heading back to the bay area on sunday, it's going to be warmer and sunny and hopefully the roads will be clear by the time you ahead home. if you're lucky enough to be able to stay until monday, it will be much warmer as our temperatures head for the low 50s. a little closer to home, we'll see temperatures in the upper 50s today, but then mid-50s tomorrow and it's probably not the best day to be out there. it's going to be pretty rainy, as well as cool and windy. by sunday, the roads and the trails may still be wet. we're heading up for 60 degrees. and a good beach day today, but the

central sierra, 43%. southern sierra, also coming in at 43%.ll see a few more inches of snowfall tonight. if you're headed that way, please be careful. there's also the chance of isolated lightning on your way up. i do think once we roll into tomorrow morning, we're done with the snow. but those roadways will be slick if you're headings up there during this week. tomorrow morning looks slick. after that we'll get clearing throughout tahoe. back in the bay area, storm ranger shows spotty areas of showers. nothing big. we've seen our chances of strong storms moving on out. but you do want to watch out for light to moderate rainfall towards brentwood and discovery bay. also a few areas of rain over los gatos and lexington hills that's moving off towards the south. as we roll through tonight, again, we're starting to see that rainfall wind down. but for tomorrow morning we'll still get some of that low clouds and patchy fog back. temperatures starting in the 40s right over san francisco. i have it at 50, though. that's the one exception. and the no

sierra snowpack, like you mentioned, 62% of average. and it's because of that rapid snow melt. >> that we are starting to see that spring snowmelt possibly causing flooding concerns in those urban areas, especially rivers right along the sierra. but radar for dry and clear for the most part here in the bay area. starting to see that increase in cloud cover for those of you throughout the sierra. but future cast for going to show a dry day on thursday. so thursday is going to be the transitional day for the upper 30's with the mid 30's by saturday. thanks to that winter storm. so the good news is we actually have a winter weather advisory going into effect noon on friday through around 1 o'clock for your saturday afternoon and for us here in the bay area, tracking rain showers arriving by thursday, lingering showers possibly friday into saturday as well. but take a look at that snow. we are going to see that the showers throughout the sierra, about half an inch of rain or less for south lake tahoe. but it's a snow totals that have me rea

and up over the sierra. we're seeing a little bit of snow here as well when it comes to rainfall amounts for the bay area. we saw just a few 107 inch as expected. and now, of course, this is going to continue to work its way out of the bay area. as far as for the sierra, there is an advisory for wind not for winter travel but wind in his last until 11 o'clock this morning. and it is right around the lake . so if you are heading up after 11 o'clock, the winds should ease up a bit still going to be breezy, but that wind advisory will expire for us, leaving in that possibility of a few sprinkles there about 10 o'clock and then we're dry and we are relatively mild for this time of year. getting into the afternoon factor right about where we should be 65 degrees for santa rosa. low sixties san francisco oakland 64 in livermore 66 expected for san jose. today we do get another opportunity at some rain as we get into the business week. better details on what you can expect for the rest of today, as well as that wee

a lot of snow in the sierra through the week looking at a half foot to a foot of snow up in the sierraven day forecast, cooler. shower chances thursday, friday and saturday. at this point for saturday as well. >>> good morning. you know it's a busy ride this morning. live look at the bay bridge toll plaza. watching that. looks like that morning commute getting busier earlier now. if are you working toward west 80 fremont. we lost that camera. we did see a bit of a back up. keep in mind that west graham on ram suspect still shut down. they will make sure things safer. in the meantime that closure will be in effect and will affect your drive in to the maze. northbound 101 light out of san i want to show you the trouble spot here in the south bay this is in the san jose area. 101 not far -- there is a crash on that southbound side. it is involving an overturned vehicle. injuries reported word that they just issued a traffic alert. southbound 101 through here because of this. no word as to -- when lanes will reopen but thing also be closed for just a minute. the two right lanes shut down.

and now we're only 59% of normal in the northern sierra nevada, in the central sierra nevada.'re looking at 66% of normal in the southern sierra nevada. 63% of normal. so they could use some snowfall and they're going to get a little bit anyway. several inches likely to come from this next weather maker. that's just off the coastline. now bringing some rain up 7 northwestern parts of far northern california. now beginning to see a couple raindrops. but it'll be a little while before can get here. in fact, you'll see on the models here as we head through the night tonight. lot of high clouds drifting up above tomorrow should be a dry day to most that rain staying well to the north. there's an area of low pressure diving on the backside of that system. and then as we get into early on thursday morning, that rain begins to kick in. i think it's going to be off and on throughout the day and this is tapped into little that atmospheric river moisture. so keep your fingers crossed. we could see some places upwards of half an inch maybe the mountain tops, but not tomorrow should be a

march central sierra and southern sierra also not looking so hot and considering at the start of january, these numbers were closer to 150% of average. that is a huge loss of momentum right there. >> now, radar shows you that cloud cover that we do have across the day really pushed right into the bay and visibility is suffering because of it. even once cloud cover burns off, it's going to be a partly cloudy day today. you can see showers continue to the north up in washington, oregon, areas that have seen too much of the rain and snow and that's of some flood advisories. that's where it continues to be sent. well, we continue to fall behind here further southward. you will see showers drifting into the north bay starting tomorrow morning for sonoma and northern marine counties. now the system stalls out immediately to our west. so instead of moving into the rest of the bay area and offering us widespread showers, it takes its time in doing so and by the time we reach the afternoon, it's unfortunately lose. some lost some steam. we'll still see some on and off showers towards thursday aft

staying of the lighter side of things in snowfall up in the sierra nevada.your saturday evening, if you want to have head up to this year for some skiing drive up there today. take it easy tomorrow as the snow falls and do a little morning skiing on sunday before you head back down on some clear conditions for both the sierra and the bay area on into your sunday. how much rain are we looking at for the bay area will will be seeing anywhere from a 10th to a quarter of an inch of rainfall. this is going to add up to one of our more significant rains of 2022, as we haven't seen a lot of rainfall really since december. it's just been these light doses ever sense. and as for the sierra nevada, a few inches of it is enough for a winter weather advisory taking effect tomorrow morning through tomorrow night, 2 to 6 inches of snowfall piling up 8 inches and localized locations. and once you head to the very top of the sierra nevada, those mountain peaks so you could see over a foot of it. now, as far as today is concerned, it will be 50's and 60's for your highs near
