let's show you that sierra forecast.you're going to head that way tomorrow, look out for some very gusty winds. wind advisories up and down the sierra, up towards lake tahoe. then the snow arrives. a little less wind on tuesday. then thursday and friday, more snow will start to move in. between now and friday, it looks like elevations above 6,000 feet, look at that. that's not bad anytime of year, let alone april. we should see numbers close to about two feet of new snow above 6,000 feet. in san jose, we have breezy conditions. close to 50 degrees. later tonight we'll see lows in the mid-40s. already approaching the mid-40s in dublin at 47 degrees. san francisco currently 48. so the morning begins with a little bit of patchy fog in a few areas. dry commute for your morning with some 30s and 40s in the valleys. what will be interesting tomorrow is our highs will likely be warmer than the numbers we saw today. so even san jose tomorrow could get close to 70 degrees. san francisco, low 60s. mid-60s towards oakland. but nort

looking at the sierra snow, there is a possibility we could get cold air and light snow in the sierranches over the next week. what's more drastic is the change in these temperatures. look at concord reaching into the upper 80s on wednesday, 91 on thursday, and then mid-80s on friday. by early next week we're only seeing high temperatures in the upper 50s and then it gradually starts to warm up. so we're going to have these big snap-backs from the temperatures we're going to see, kind of what we call a whiplash as we go from 93 in the inrand areas on thursday to the mid-70s on saturday and then upper 50s next week with a chance of rain late on monday night. looking at san francisco, also, very hot temperatures headed our way. mid-80s by the end of the week. and now let's turn to our climate in crisis. something that we're looking at, the sierra snowpack. in fact, as we just now made it past the april 1st snow survey, there are now 44 million people across the west experiencing a really tough drought out there, and it draws down the groundwater. you can see all of these areas in red th

he's the manager of uc berkeley's central sierra snow lab.received 14 inches of snow and expects another 1 to 2 ft of snow to fall. he says. this storm is indeed cause for celebration. historically it's actually not all that rare for us to get snow in april and even may. but what makes this current storm so special is just how dry the beginning of the year has been. and now that we're getting away from that, you know, we had basically the driest start to a year that january through march period that california has ever seen, so it's so great to be seeing this know how significant is this in terms of combating the drought, every drop of water that comes out of the sky. whether it be as rain or snow flake is incredibly important to help us with our water resources. it is and so these bigger storms later in the spring, are incredibly helpful for at least easing some of the pressure of the drought. um and helping with our forest fire danger. how much snow are we? are we seeing from this latest storm? we already have about 14 inches of snow as the

so don't makes today the day to drive up in the sierra. if you want enjoy some snow had up there tomorrow, tuesday and wednesday are the best days to venture outside for any sort of travels. you need to get done as thursday. we'll see the return of some light rainfall. most of the north bay have already picked up most the rain you'll get so additional rain knocking about to too much. still looking at the potential of another 10th of an inch of rain, though, further south in the region. and as for the sierra nevada, 6 inches of snowfall possible for those upper elevations. we are in the winter weather advisory and not just because of the snow but the strong winds up in the sierra upper elevations, 50 miles per hour. plus, wind gusts could result in some downed trees, maybe even some issues on those roadways with visibility issues. so make sure to avoid today for your sierra travels. enjoy that tomorrow. winds in the bay area will be 50 mile per hour gusts but solid. 25 to 30 miles per hour gusts for many of us that paired with the 50's that

snow up in the sierra nevada.than this rain to the bay area. did. it's going to stay with us through midday. so if you are heading up to the sierra later in the day is better. we get sunshine later on. that's going to be a nice way to finish out such a grey start to our tuesday. tomorrow we start with the dry skies, but we end with the weather conditions by your evening commute. rainfall across the north bay will have already made roadways really wet but moving into those late afternoon, early evening hours for the rest of the bay showers should remain light for the most part on wednesday night, but really pick up come thursday morning, expecting to see some heavy pockets of rainfall pushing through the bay come those morning commute hours on thursday. and that can really up those rainfall totals in localized areas. snow in the sierra is going to be constant throughout the day thursday, thursday night into friday. and we'll have some pretty impressive totals from it, too. as for rainfall potential, we could see so

and it's not just winter weather advisories this time around for the sierra. it's a winter storm warning through 11:00am on friday. day once you head above 7,000 feet in the sierra, we're talking 2 to 3 feet of snowfall that he's he's lot to be talking this late in the season. it is going to make traffic a nightmare. but it is exactly what we need to see. so just plan around it. as far as your drive up to the sierra goes 50's for your highs near the coast. it will be 60's for your highs along the bay shore as well as further inland. very familiar. as far as temperatures go. so what you're seeing on the map today as stuff that we've been seeing for about a week and a half now and stuff are pretty used to got the light jacket, but make sure the umbrella and rain jacket or stored away their package. you're leaving because you will be needing those towards the tail end of the day today. a look ahead at tomorrow and friday shows temperatures even a little bit cooler than today's only mid 60's for warmest numbers. rain tonight into tomorrow morning. midday break on

look at the sierra. the last rain was a little bit of lightning with the system coming into the sierra. that will help intensify some of this fall when it gets to higher elevations but the reason i point that out is because back here at home, even though we are done with the rain, we are only mostly done. we are largely done but if you take a look at what happens in the futurecast, get down into snowy counties this afternoon and evening. this will be few and far between but that is an important signature to look for because you could get an isolated thunderstorm. most of the energy should be off the coast but it will lurk there is a possibility but the overwhelming majority of us are down, down with the rain. the wind is the biggest impact, blustery and chilly because the thermometer is only going to the mid to upper 50s and when you take the wind at 20 miles per hour, that will make it feel cooler. that is what the thermometer will say which means it will feel colder in the afternoon, low to mid 50s at

to if you need to head up to the sierra we to later on today.ur wednesday tomorrow rainfall pushes initially mid afternoon for the north bay. then right around commute. time for the rest of us tomorrow afternoon stays with us through tomorrow night on into thursday morning. it's going to be a slick drive to work to start thursday. so expect to leave extra early thursday and friday as you get back onto those roads. also notice snowfall is going to stay with us all day long on thursday as well. showers for much of the bay area. so that's the data plan, anything indoors and definitely not venturing out too much towards thursday itself. as for rainfall totals from wednesday night on into friday morning, some spots could get upwards of an inch of rain will have pockets of heavier rain in there. and should one of those pockets move overhead for you? you're going to see one of those greater rainfall totals. now, winter weather advisories are still in effect for the sierra until 11:00am this morning. they will expire but only briefly going right back in

the snow in the sierra stays put for a bit.will see skies gradually clearing out specially towards the middle of the day. we actually got a good dose of sunshine this afternoon. tomorrow we start the day, just opposite dry skies followed by rainfall returning towards the finish of the day tomorrow. rain will initially pushing for the north bay towards mid afternoon impacting your evening commute tomorrow from are in napa and sonoma counties pushing south of the golden gate little bit later on and we'll start to see those on and off showers through your wednesday evening. heavier rainfall at times on into thursday. you see those pockets of orange and even read in there. those are those pockets of heavier rain and even a roll of thunder to possible pushing through the day on thursday. snow in the sierra also well, through the day on thursday, those pockets of heavier rainfall could result in some areas seeing well over an inch of rainfall from wednesday night on into friday morning. that's a pretty good dose of rain here. definit

the storm this week brought several feet of snow to the of the to the sierra. question is is it really going to make much a difference? this is the first one taken around april 1st. check around lake tahoe right here. see the snow here? moving forward, another photo taken just a couple days ago. you see the lake. how bare it was. you see the snow here. it -- it is a step in the right direction. let's bring in meteorologist vianey arana right now. how much did these storms really help our snow? >> it is a nice little boost to our sierra snowpack for sure and we take what we can get. beautiful shot of lake that show. 46 degrees. of course, conditions have improved but as terry mentioned, how did this play into our sierra snow pack? this is broken down into three, right some north, central, and south. this is california. north up to about 37%. the south still about 23% but we did see about a 4% increase in that statewide average. we were about 31%. this is now bumped up to 35%. this is not counting the latest snow that we got, you know, just within the past 48 hou

r s k sierras. mike to celie is standing by. he went up to the series this morning and shows us how we're looking up there in the mountains. it is april 21st . and this is your picture when snow freezing temperatures up here in this year. picture pretty much speaks for itself. we are getting hit with snow and one of the big stories this morning is the winter driving conditions. let me go this way we're above interstate 80. it's soda springs, the 6700 ft elevation elevation level. that is looking up towards donner summit you can see as the wind is pushing that snow across the freeway at times. visibility being impacted. you can see how slow it is getting up over donner summit right now. that traffic stopped just talked with the highway patrol officer. he was saying. it's a big rigs just struggling to get up over the summit. we saw a big rig toe also heading up that way. i saw report earlier today of a truck just not having the traction. it had to be pushed it a little bit of nudge to get some traction going up. the incline here.

nice and clear in this picture, the rain has passed but there's a lot of snow in the sierra. i know much-needed snow. we got up to 2 and a half feet of snow. >> for parts of the sierra, but we are tracking their receive driving conditions now that that winter storm has exited this year this morning. so if you are heading out to this year this weekend to take advantage of that fresh powder you're in life are tracking safe driving conditions all weekend long. sierra snow lab palisades and kirkwood all reported about 2 and a half feet of fresh powder within the last 48 hours. and that helped boost the sierra snowpack up to 35% of normal. so we still have a long ways to go. but hey, we did get a nice boost. thanks to those april showers making its way, not just in the bay area, but the sierra as well. and we're still noticing some lingering snow showers for those of you in truckee, a little bit of light rain and snow mixture there, but drying out for south lake tahoe. and we're going to continue with that drying trend and a lot of sunshine for the 1st half of the weekend. tempera
