a spring snowstorm in the sierra caught many drivers off guard as brian hickey reports from king veil if you're planning a trip to tahoe, you need to have your chains handy. a lot of drivers heading up into the sierra today caught off guard by this spring snowstorm that brought overnight flurries here to the sierra and with that chain controls chain control this morning in king veil from king veil to truckee, so just the highest part of donner summit where drivers are needing those four wheel drives with snow tires or chains, and a lot of folks just simply caught off guard by this either. they didn't have their chains so they couldn't go anywhere or if they did have chains. didn't know how to put them on and this time of year just starting a lot of chain installers out here. a lot of them have moved on to other jobs this time of year. and so this is time of year when you need to be prepared not only with the chains but also the knowledge of how to put them on in case you need to do the job yourself. and that is what we run into this morning with a lot of drivers up here. just not read

we really see that snowfall picking up in the sierra overnight tonight into tomorrow. that's going to offer up a few more inches up there, make for some slick conditions on roadways. so if you have plans on traveling up 80 highway 50 on up towards lake tahoe, either today or tomorrow, anticipate those slick conditions as you're moving up there. now, if you do like the cooldown saver today, tomorrow, the coolest days of your forecast. after that, we're going to start seeing t,mperatures rising pretty quickly. that's eventually going to take us into the low 90's by the weekend. ahead for many spots. that's about to be a full 30 degrees. warmer. then today's daytime highs, san jose, you'll be at 62 today. pleasanton livermore, dublin, only at 59 oakland, right at 60 for your high conquered 62. and even our warmest spots like pittsburgh, vacaville only at 63 degrees today. tomorrow's temperatures right around the same as today. so not a lot of change from today into your tuesday. wednesday will rise back into the low 70's for will stay on thursday. low 80's inland by frida

the chp has a warning for anyone traveling to the sierra. these videos tell you all you need to know. conditions on 50 and 80, chains currently required for parts of highway 50. rob mayeda joining us now with a closer look at all this crazy weather. >> more snow right now than we saw in february. we're seeing more of it currently falling in may. 32 degrees at south lake tahoe. and you see the snow there. the color coding on the radar coming down on the west slope of the sierra. bay area seeing a few isolated showers. but the main impact for us will be the gusty winds at times. and we'll have another evening with wind gusts up to 47 miles per hour out at sfo. we have wind speeds sustained at about 25 to 30 from oakland into san mateo. and we will see more of this heading into tomorrow. and notice our highs today were only in the mid- to upper 50s. temperatures dropping about 5 to 10 degrees from the same time yesterday. so these gusty winds will continue through about 9:00 tonight, coming down a little bit for the morning, and flaring back up

and there you see the potential some of snow around the sierra. and then another system could drop down for sunday. unfortunately, where we're concerned, this looks like a lot more wind as opposed to showers on sunday. we're talking about a tenth of an inch of rain for some of the hills. stay tuned on the gusty winds. some of the long range weather models as we head into next weekend. we'll show stronger winds gusts. you will notice the wind speeds might be in the 30 to 40-mile-per-hour range for next weekend. we'll certainly want the showers to show up. so there is your temperature roller coaster ride. low 60s in san francisco. mid to upper 70s for a day there on wednesday and a taste of summer temperatures once the winds back off in our inland areas. more spring showers. that mean more sierra snow next weekend. but we'll have to watch the wind speeds. could it get gusty at times. cooling, kind of hot, more showers and some wind heading into next weekend. >> looks good. thank you. >>> when we come back, it is video you have to see to believe. the
