in the sierra, it's a mess. along i-80 in truckee at the donner summit, look at that. it's near whiteout conditions there, at least on the road. this is not the time to drive to lake tahoe. let's bring in our chief meteorologist jeff ranieri. it's looking good out there but dangerous for so many parts of the area. >> and for tahoe, friday, tomorrow, that's going to be kind of your window of opportunity to get up there before some heavier sierra snow moves in. rainfall totals looking pretty good. as expected, peninsula down to the south bay got hit with some of the heaviest rainfall. oakland just over an inch. san francisco an inch. san jose 0.76. and napa at 0.67. let's show you the atmospheric river that's met up with this extremely cold storm system. it really pummeled us this morning and now it's starting to move off to the south. we're on the last legs of this. you can see some low snow happening over mount hamilton. then we're tracking just a little bit more in the way of some rainfall here from morgan hill and gilroy as we head through this hour. but, again, over

the snow will keep falling in the sierra. we could get another 10 inches. this is a little below 5000 feet at this point. we saw the daytime high which is where we are right now. here comes the next series of storms. wednesday we are in the clear. by friday, the next system comes in. you can see friday's first line of rain does not have a whole lot to it. we should get something out of this on friday. then the main brunt of the system comes through into saturday. this one is going to be tricky to watch in the forecast. we will see how that plays out. at this point it looks like we will get some rain again friday and saturday. it looks like more good now for the sierra. that takes us through the weekend. if we just want to have a little bit of fun with this can go to next week. that's from looks really good. of course, that is looking way out into next week. so, we are not going to go on that train ride with the just get. it is nice to know the forecast models are still saying the storms will keep coming. even if they do not look as good as they might 10 day

heavy snow at times around the sierra also closed roadways up and through the sierra. 33 at lake tahoe. freezing temperature, about 2 2. here's what's interesting -- the next three days at lake tahoe, it's not going to get above 32 degrees. look at those low single digits. here's the good news for travel -- i think by monday into tuesday, things will start to dry out. they'll stay cold. the heavy snow should start to move out as we head through monday morning. winter storm warnings still in effect. we could still see another two to three feet coming down as those snow levels start to drop closer to placerville and colfax to wrap up the weekend heading into monday morning. right now, showers passing by san francisco at 53 degrees. take you over to san rafael, it's 54. by the way, pretty close to tomorrow's high temperatures, the numbers we're seeing out right now. 56 in san jose. where the rain is falling, clearly it's happening right there on the camera lens, 53 degrees in dublin. but let's see storm ranger's point of view on things. sure enough, the camera's located right there, near

sierras. wait for more snow and they're going to get it. we've got a pretty big storm system on its way. john's been talking about snow warnings, winter weather warnings all and in fact, the national weather service advising him not to head up this weekend because it's clear the roads look right now. yeah, that's not the way it's going to be come this time tomorrow and all the roads aren't as clear. monica dan is up there in placer county. let's take a peek. >> good morning, james and we are on the move right now. we are in fact in placer county where an emigrant gap and we're going to take you on the i-80 going eastbound on a show you what conditions are looking like. >> this is just a 24 hours since we first started to see snow come down in the sierra. we know this is the calm before the storm. the big storm that's going to be making its way starting later tonight and really the brunt of it tomorrow. want you to take a look here if we will, to the sides of the road. you can see the snow piled up and then, you know, it's going to be danger

so it's a lot of rain up in the sierra next week., though, as we continue to see much needed moisture. but is it too much of a good thing? well, we're already saturated. so continued light showers today really pick up this evening around the evening commute and then especially so into overnight hours tonight, see all that orange, red and yellow on the map into early morning hours tomorrow. that is heavy downpours, especially for the santa cruz mountains. and this could make for some flooding across parts of the bay area. we have flood watches in effect at 10:00pm tonight for the entire bay area. but especially the santa cruz mountains around burn scars, worried about the possibility of both flooding and mudslides as wellras debris flows around the 3 to 6 inches possible there just overnight tonight, heavy rainfall for the rest of us. also could result in some very treacherous conditions. tomorrow morning. now temperatures right now are in the 50's. so we are off to a mild start to what is continue to be a mild afternoon today. i'll b

watch the fire hose which has gone across big sir and into the southern sierra.ou can see where the focus of the river is. you can see a little narrow ploom that is extending out over nevada. that is a powerful storm to be able to hold together like that in that narrow region and get over the sierra. we are done with it. if you look at the close up view, now we get a break. it is good. we need a break because there are series of storms coming our way. let's go through in order. you do not get rained on tomorrow. there will be some fog tomorrow morning. mrat plan on having to slow down a bit. wednesday there is a lot of sunshine till about 7:00. then the clouds will pick up and then very early thursday we start to get rained on again. it won't be a lot thursday morning. it will be more noticeable second half of the day on thursday right here. this gets us into the afternoon and then the screen lights up again. a little more into the evening here. this is the first storm. it will be hard to tell when one ends and the next one begins. we will see how that plays out

the sierra nevada.t's where the heaviest of snow falls now being seen up in the sierra as well as up in the mountains of the coast, north of redding. if you're heading up to oregon and i-5, it is snow packed already pockets of heavy rain also approaching sacramento in the central valley. you can see in future cast that same line of showers dropping as we make our way through the morning by 08:00am solidly on the peninsula out to the east bay from oakland down to san leandro and alameda looking at pockets of heavy rain out there by 09:00am pushing further south down towards areas like santa clara, sunnyvale and mountain view. and beyond that towards 10:00am into the south bay, we'll start to dry out towards the noon hour for the south bay, the north bay being the first spots to be drying out this morning. rest of the day looks really sunny. now you sunshine is going to be warm, right? that cold front keeping us cold all day long in tonight's with clear skies and that cold air mass firmly in place. we're

so definitely cooling things off and the sierra the winter storm warning continues. this was the scene earlier today from the west shore of tahoe. he could see how that heavy stuff like that the sense of that heavy snowfall coming down to the winter storm warning in place until early monday morning, you heard about the closures on interstate 80 near colfax and highway 15 near khyber is and the additional snowfall forecast could be around 1 to 3 ft. in the sunday snow level, is coming down as well that cold air movement and could be coming down to around 2500 ft. here is the active radar once again. we have the rain here in the bay area, and all that snowfall piling up in the sierra right now. see all the coverage. from donner to south lake tahoe to kirkwood to bear valley back here in the bay area. we're showing you still some more showers developing out there, but it looks like the main action right now is kind of shooting on out to the east, but we still have some rainfall closer to antioch and rio vista , but we still have also tracking some light to moderate selv

so right now is your window to get up into the sierra.xpected at some of the crest of the sierra nevada. this next storm isn't going quite packed a punch as what we saw yesterday. it's still going to add a lot of new snowfall on top of their, though. so today, a great skiing day. also a great travel day tomorrow and sunday. we're likely to have some conditions up there. they're going make it a little we could see a couple of flurries on monday morning. but monday's a good travel back day. so if you want to take that extended weekend, that's honestly your ideal drive up today, ski saturday, sunday drive back on monday. if you must write back on sunday, do you anticipate likely some inclement conditions as you're getting your way back down there. now, as far as we go today, obviously clear for the sierra and clear for the bay area too. we are in the midst of a really cold morning. but freeze warnings for the north bay. only last about 10 more minutes now. our next system couple saying dropping down from the gulf of alaska. this one is going

and in the sierra. this was the case earlier today, looking out from tahoe's west shore, and this will be a storm that transforms the look of the mountains. right now. we have clear conditions on 80 and 50 that will be changing the for tomorrow that snowfall forecast around 1 to 3 ft. and, as you heard, maybe at a higher peaks, we could have amounts approaching four ft. here's a satellite. that storm is up to our north and this camera kind of tells you what's happening. clouds already back in the picture. you can see what happens later on tonight. the chance of some rainfall, but the north bay this is thursday morning. this is the thursday morning commute. this will be extra challenging with those downpours out there, possibly in urban and small stream, flood advisory and the winds as we talked about gusty and over 40 miles an hour things change later in the day, and then we're talking about another storm. as we head into the weekend. we'll have more on that with your full update. coming up in just a fe

but of course, up in. >> the sierra as well. what are you thinking today that remind me all the self-driving cars here in the bay with all the cameras everywhere. yeah. the sierra today, guys, as you can see, monica out there driving around just below soda springs. this is donner summit. >> the very crest of the sierra look at those trees in the distance and you can see how the cameras just shaking back and forth in the midst of not just some snow piling up up there, but winds gusting as high as 60 miles per hour for the sierra today. that just makes it really slick and low visibility white out conditions very likely on the roads today. we are going to be looking at much better travel conditions tomorrow. as monica mentioned, and then saturday towards the afternoon we get slick and snow yet again sunday. even more of that snowfall. that's travel days being tomorrow into early saturday and again on monday. maybe you can take monday off of work and enjoy all that fresh snowfall this weekend on the slopes up there. look at how wide

thunder snow in the sierra. and down in the central and southern sierra which has been hit particularly hard by the drought, this storm will do some of its best work. some of the biggest snowfall totals are going to fall down in the southern sierra where it was desperately needed. this storm is excellent news. we will look back on this and say that one did us a favor. in terms of what it will do for us, we still have the second half to go. we live through this rain, this was our first alert day. the strong rain. we got close to an inch in santa rosa. four inches in the santa cruz mountains and six tenths of an inch in san jose. more on those numbers later. that was the main event. now, we find ourselves in the second chapter and it looks more like this. isolated showers, there is some coming across the peninsula. newark, over the east bay shore. into the trivalley. they are the only ones getting it. and that's the way it will go. isolated, on again, off again. showers. that will stay pretty much through tomorrow

zooming out snow in the sierra nevada as well. we should see the next several hours remaining relatively calm compared to what we saw earlier this morning. chance of a thunderstorm late morning in the north bay and spotty showers on into the early afternoon. be ready for rain at any point today, although it really kicks back up after sunset tonight, current temperatures are mostly in the upper 40's to low 50's. so if you're venturing out there, bring the light jackets and you make it a rain jacket again this morning. great job thing so that will we have an accident. 80 westbound east of that fremont street exit. so. >> drive times are going up a bridge. 41 minutes into the city. you certainly don't want to wait in that. so if you can maybe take barter, you can take the ferry or an alternate bridge. you might want to do that. no issues along our san mateo bridge. in fact, we're at 15 minutes a 80 to 101. if you are going to take a richmond center fell bridge. a 21 minute ride for you there. things have been slick along that bridge.

we've seen several storms so far this month dropped fresh powder in the sierra. the statewide snowpack is about 163% of average for this time of year. that's according to the california department of water resources, which manages the st snow survey . it forecast the state's water supply for a year based on how much water content is in the sierra nevada snowpack. the first snow survey of the 2023 snow season is tentatively scheduled to be recorded on january. 3rd so off to a good start there we turn now to our weather back here in the bay area temperatures picking up just a bit here market was kind of a great day to start with. the sun eventually came out. yeah, i talked to coop this week two and he is out of his mind. by the way. yeah the snow up there is ridiculous. you know, we have to kind of pace ourselves all right, because we had a great start last year that things and stuff faded away, so we'll be thankful for this awesome start for the sierra snowpack and hopefully, things will continue. in fact, it does look like an active period into the next week, but

don't be heading up into the sierra tomorrow.ill likely be closed off 50's for your daytime highs today as well. as for tomorrow. cooling off a little bit after that rain and wind tomorrow. showers continue sunday. before we dry out into monday. great. john, thanks for that. will we do have a vehicle fire to tell you about? this is along highway 37. >> westbound at skaggs island road in toledo. so you can see that slight delay that were seen as you're traveling there. if you're headed into the city traffic building 18 minutes, mace to that fremont street exit. no accidents or hazards contributing to those delays. and we're seeing san mateo bridge 40 minutes, a 80 to 101 traveling across towards the peninsula highway for any acts. one, 60 to conquer to 42 around 17 minutes. and if you're taking 6.80, doubling down, fremont about 15 minutes, you can see 8.80, here still pretty much in the greatest. just as you're passing to fremont as you're seeing slight delays. and highway 24 walnut creek down to 5.80. you're at 12 minutes. darya

same for you at sierra tahoe tahoe donner sugar bowl, sierra snow lab. also some really impressive totals over the weekend and here in the bay area. we saw some impressive rainfall, danville, 2 and a half inches of it. half moon bay, an inch and a half almost well mill valley all the way up to 3 inches of rainfall over the weekend. that was a system that packed a punch right there. and it's still doing that. just no longer the bay area. it's moved to the south and east of us now a few areas of snowfall right around sequoia national park on up in the sierra tom, who is dried out, though, in the bay area. also in the drying process now is the system works its way out. so this setting us up for really dry week ahead of us. a dry, cool trajectory throughout the course of this week. skies will clear out really nicely today with plenty of sunshine. now tonight we will see likely a hard freeze across the north bay. this is prompting a freeze watch to become a warning starting at 01:00am tonight for the inland north bay. so if you have some plants that are littl

sierra at tahoe, 4 feet of snow and sierra snow lab. more than 3 and a half feet of fresh powder. and even those of you that sugar bowl slightly less than 4 feet of snow. so we're going to notice some lighter snow accumulations on the moderate side up to 6 inches of snow from now through monday morning. starting to notice that system drying out with on again off again. scattered showers tonight for the bay area and also the threat of pop-up thunderstorms as well with the bulk of the wet weather currently over morgan hill. but we're starting to see some snow showers over the highest peaks for the south bay mountains, specifically over mount hamilton. but rain totals, 3 inches in mill valley with this latest storm in downtown san francisco. more than an inch of rain rain. so we are seeing overnight showers but then drier conditions by monday morning. and also we're expecting to get about half an inch of or less from now through monday morning. details on your workweek forecast because we're going to cool down big time or in my full forecast in just a few minutes. back to dan and wel

the temperatures, as you saw the sights from here to the sierra, feels like december. mid-40s outside right now and a soggy start to your saturday evening outside. i think the most widespread rain we will see this weekend is occurring right now around the bay area in terms of the widespread downpours at times. right now around the tri-valley check some of the rain totals, 0.75 inch of rain near san ramon. san jose close to 0.75 inch of rain. 49 degrees in san jose and now moderate rain reaching san rafael, 46 degrees and a soggy drive. cars, hopefully, increasing the spacing there as they go across the bridge there with the rain coming down. you see it in the lights. 48 degrees in san francisco. so much of the rain, which is for the most part kind of bottled in the south bay in the inland east bay has moved north san francisco to mill valley and oakland, castro valley towards walnut creek and still seeing it in the tri-valley. what has changed since 5:00? are the yellows and oranges around the south bay, that has moved out. moderate rain though around morgan hill, sout

as i mentioned, you do see that snowfall already falling up in the sierra. definitely not the day to be traveling up there right now. 04:15am. you can see that line of showers, the heaviest of it still well to our north by 06:00am line drops further on in towards a marine county and southern sonoma county pushing into the peninsula after that between 6, 07:00am, to 08:00am moving through san francisco on down the peninsula and eventually into the south bay. so just depends on where you're at on when you're going to see your heaviest of rain this morning. it does have an impact on your morning commute, though. our early risers going to be seeing the very start of it, whereas those of us in venturing onto the roadways a little bit later will be encountering some of the heavier stuff towards noontime today. san jose are still holding onto showers. most of us out of it at this point in just a few pockets of lingering sprinkles on into the afternoon. tomorrow is going to be consistently dried. a good day to get outside before saturday brings a return of rainfall

the higher crest of the sierra nevada. we're talking 7,000 feet up that you're going to see the real heavy snow. these are very warm storm system coming through on friday into saturday. the atmospheric river event. ridge in the storm systems tend to be a lot warmer. and so now you may have some flooding issues across the sierra. i think as you can see, some melting snow in some spots. so something else to watch out for. you've got a different type of a storm system moving in with a very different type of moisture content. and so avalanches are real possibilities for an avalanche watch has been posted all the way from the taller it down the south across the southern sierra nevada to so something to watch out for. if you're headed up there in the coming days, we've got the storms rolling on into start with. you're going to see a mixture of rain and snow. heavy snow above 7,000 feet. you get above 8,000 feet. that's we're talking about 3 to 5 feet of snow. so, yeah, be prepared. a likely going to see some delays during this p

back now to our storm in the sierra. it was a slow roll. 50 remains closed. 80 is closed was closed but is now back open. melanie wingo reports from soda springs tonight. the month of december, ushered in by a needed and welcome storm system. but along with new sierra snow came highway hangups and headaches, a ripple effects felt at lower elevations as caltrans in chp crashes and spinouts higher up the pass. eastbound drivers diverted off interstate 80 at alta stacking up on the side of the road to wait out hours long closures. we came up turn around. we waited a little bit, and then we found out that it was open, so we came back up. finally reopening for cars and trucks trying to get across interstate 80 guys working on the south freeway when everybody's whizzing bias, big rigs in need of help. every time there's a snowstorm up here we're up here morning, noon and night, giving a hand by technicians working through the storm. it doesn't matter what temperature what's wrong with the tractor trailer guys who have seen it
