all eyes are really on the sierra. as we've been talking about the past few days, that concern is the excessive snowmelt occurring on the feet up on feet of snow. i've been talking about this just how damaging this could be. and we do have flash flood warnings and many small streams that dude rain down into those reservoirs. so that will help with flood control somewhat. but we definitely do have some concern here as that are historic snow melt occurs. now some of our heaviest of rain is also up in the sierra foothills right now. as for the bay area, things are nice and quiet right now. that's not to say it's an easy go, though. we did have some heavy rain overnight and all those little blue bubbles that you're seeing on the roads. those are areas where we have standing water being reported. so just take it slower as you make your way out of the house. heaviest of rain in our region is south of gilroy heading down towards the central coast. we'll keep you u >> from the area's local news station, you're watching the kro

southern sierra is close to 300% of normal. scientists have found tiny particles called microplastics in newly fallen snow in the sierra. as john ramos reports scientists say this is part of a growing global problem. >> reporter: typically the concern over plastic pollution has centered on our waterways. but now there's growing evidence that it may actually exist in the air around us. the snow that's fallen in the sierra holds hope for an end to the drought. but it may also hold a warning. for the past two years, dr. monica erinzo an associate professor for the desert research institute tested high sierra snow in several locations and found something that shouldn't be there. >> tiny plastic fibers in the new fallen snow. >> do what we found so far is that some of our sites to have microplastics in them. we've identified nylon and rayon so far. we still a lot of work to do to compare between these sites and then compare from year to year. >> reporter: it's not the only place where plastics should be out of place. environmental r

let's see what's going on in the sierra now. the foothills are concerned because you can see this is not snow. it's rain that's falling here. pioneer is coming down off the trails trail. yes. so they're really concerned about flooding because not only is the rain going accumulate, but all the rain, all the snow that the rain is melting is adding to that as well. kron four's monica de anda is in el dorado county as she has a look at the conditions. >> hey, good morning, james and i i want to show you what it's looking like here in the community of pines. want to take you outside here to give you that. look from our amazing cameras inside this truck. you can see this snow lining both sides of the row and some of it towards the bottom. you can kind of tell from this look is kind of turning to slush now in its. that's a concern for the community here and for communities further down the foothills because of the fact that, you know, all the so we've gotten over the last week and a half, it's going to melt and with the rain that we're

concerns are actually up in the sierra. it's comparatively quiet for the bay. we saw our heaviest of rain in our strongest of winds last night. a lot of that is transitioning further south. all those little blue pockets that you're seeing, those are areas where we do have reports of standing water on roadways. it's quiet for the north bay, but do watch for puddles spots that could provide areas that you could hydroplane in. now, we are also seeing a few light showers here and there around redwood city as well as around union city in the east bay and for the south bay. it starts to get a little more active. once you head south of san jose along 101 roadways are certainly very wet as well. temperatures are mild this morning. we've been talking about how warm of a system this is after yesterday's 30's were solid, 10 degrees warmer to start the day than what we saw yesterday morning. so as light rain jacket ready to go. you'll notice it doesn't feel near as cold, though. winds have also come down last night. wind gusts peaked as high as 50 miles per hour in the bay

almost 200% for the central sierra and 231% for the southern sierra. overall 190% of what is normal to this point in the season. there are those blank spots where the map has just run out of colors to paint the data. let's get a little different view of this. we can track the amount of snow. we have north, central, south and the sierra as a whole. the shaded area indicates a normal year's path for the snow water contents, if you melted down all of the snow to water how much moisture is in there. the red line indicates way above normal levels. that's what we created in the best year for sierra snowfall. that was the winter of 1997-98. a strong el nino year. the blue line is where we are to this point in the season, so running about halfway between normal and that record for the northern sierra, it awfully close to record territory in the central sierra and above the 1997-98 winter pace in the southern sierra and very close to record territory overall. it has been an exceptional winter so far and there's more snow on the way. just within the next seven d

it's actually the sierra foothills. that's where we're seeing a lot of rain on areas that had been seeing snow. and as i've been talking about the past few days, resulting in potential of runoff and small stream flooding up in the sierra bay. area's actually quieting down really nicely this morning, north bay, very quiet, a few showers here and there for the rest of us and further south in the bay, the heaviest stuff that we do have is from gilroy down to salinas marina on up to watsonville and over to santa cruz. definitely a focus more on the central coast now. some heavier rainfall out into the central valley. we will see spotty showers still ahead of us for the rest of the day today, especially for the peninsula, east bay and south bay, north bay. you'll be one of our quieter area. 07:00am here. some isolated showers pushing through the bay towards 08:00am as well. peeks of sunshine in the north bay. you're going to be our clearest and thomas region for the remainder of the day. we have great conditions around noont

speaking of the sierra latest snowfall estimates even updated since yesterday showing the southern sierra now 224% of average central sierra, nearly 200% of average snowpack. as we have this first day of march. now temperatures will be in the 50's this afternoon. whether you're at the coast along the bay shore or further inland, most of us are hanging out this comfortably cool range. so as long as you've got the jackets ready to go today is going to be a much more pleasant day to be stepping outside a whole lot, sunny year and a whole lot drier than we have been. oakland, 56 degrees for your high today. vallejo and napa at 55. same for you in santa rosa nevado and center fell getting your lookahead tomorrow and friday. similar temperatures, a few passing clouds but still dry saturday. the rain returns showers light on sunday and then monday and tuesday, it looks like rain will continue great. all right, john, thank you for that. let's look at those bridges this morning. if you're heading into the city right now. >> it's going to take about 7 minutes to make that drive your san mateo bridg

the central sierra snow lab confirms garcia. this is the snowiest winter in the sierra cents 1970. it's great news for resorts, skiers and businesses in the greater lake tahoe area, but it does come with some dangers. like avalanches. this one struck last night near palisades resort the first two floors of this three story apartment building are completely buried in a sea of powder. it happened around seven o'clock last night.p above there to the very peak of the mountain is the tram. if you kind of come down, you can sort of see there's some cracks. sabo was staying in the building next door, 12 30 last night, plaster county sheriff's deputies knocked on his door to warn hime condo next hours and blown out a bunch of the windows. i did see this morning where the avalanche would come down and kind of cleared out, bent over some trees and tossed the dumpster. here's a look at the conditions that led up to that avalanche ski patrollers at palisades shared this video from the top of the peaks yesterday near the kt 22 lift. it looks like they're on a polar expedition, not in sunny cali

is the sierra foothills a risk of flooding out there? bay area quieting down towards the coast on up into the north bay. we are seeing some heavier showers along highway 4 eastern solano county. most widespread rain falls from san jose gilroy down the hollister as well. some santa cruz of highway 17 into the santa clara valley. that's just because all this moisture is shifting further southward in doing so. we'll continue to see pockets of heavy rainfall for parts of the bay. but the most common rain will be down in the south bay today. so san jose, you're going to the greatest rainfall totals today. 09:00am right here. and you can see the north bay actually getting a few peeks of sunshine, south bay, not just yet for you towards noontime, a good chance to get outside run all those areas you need to run. take the dog on the extra long walk because we will see some spotty showers into the afternoon after that. and for see some times of heavy rain - into tomorrow morning hours. not looking so bad, but middle of the day. we do see a resurge

snow is multiple feet are expected at the crest of the sierra lower elevations of the sierra. it's going to be rain. snow mix to just rainfall and for areas like lake tahoe that could pose an issue. temperatures will be above freezing. a slushy mix expected and likely some flooding risk too. so a lot going on in the sierra. the gusty winds, the heavy snow at higher elevations and the risk of flooding at lower elevations and a risk of flooding here in the bay too. we do have flood watches taking effect today through sunday for the entirety of the bay area as well as the central valley up into the sierra. today's highs will be in the 50's. so not a lot of change in temps just yet. but look at the weekend warming into the 60's by saturday, sunday and monday. our heaviest of rainfall later today into tomorrow. showers continue this weekend and then more heavy rain early next week rain. all right, john, let's get you going out there. a 43 minute. drive along 101. >> traveling from 85 up towards menlo park. >> a good time to get out and get things done before you can't really seeing

the snow piling up in the sierra. we're also seeing some snow in our own bay area mountaintops to a couple of sprinkles here in the bay area. a few light showers around gilroy sprinkle or 2 around san jose. now this does continue today. this low pressure area creating nice dip in the jet stream that's ushering in cold air our direction. keeping things cold for now. but we see the wind or opening for more tropical moisture in atmospheric river system pulling that moisture and southwest of us down towards hawaii, those warm pacific waters and bringing it right here to the bay area. now, this tropical moisture is going to be on the warmer side of things. so as this of heavy rainfall reaches the bay area come thursday and friday, the concern here is that it's going to come along with a lot of rain, higher elevations of the sierra and road salt in a wash out a lot of that snow pack that has been accumulating for weeks now and not making its way down into our rivers and streams that resulting in the risk of flooding, especi

and the southern sierra.that. so there's a lot of potential for about to occur. if things do warm up, that's actually what we are looking at towards the end of this week. so snow is starting to lighten up in the sierra. we've certainly seen things coming down in the bay area. a few lingering showers right around san leandro on up towards san ramon. currently couple of snow flurries up around mount hamilton as well. now this low pressure area incur to our north has streams cold air consistently our direction for the past few weeks. this is when the snow has been piling up feet upon feet up in the sierra. now that we've got solid snow pack, we're taking a turn for the warmer and wetter as we see an atmospheric river. that's tropical moisture from the central pacific. that gets funneled right up our direction. there's that moisture plume and bam arrives to california come thursday. this is going to result in heavy and prolonged rainfall through thursday, friday into saturday for the bay area. it's not as much of

snowfall in highest of elevations in the sierra.ally not stopped over the weekend and it's still coming down up there. the bay area, things have been kind of chill. we have seen some heavier rain showers, isolated yesterday. today. we're going to take a step back from that and things are going to be nice and calm for the most part. take today as a preparation day for what we have overnight tonight into tomorrow. now upper 40's to low to mid 50's. our current temperatures. things are overall pretty good out there. i would keep the light rain jacket on hand. it's kind of that seattle style of weather where it's just a light sprinkle some misty conditions from time to time winds will gradually pick up today. and by the evening tonight, we're looking at some really strong winds, high wind warnings going into effect 50 to 70 miles per hour. peak wind gust during or overnight hours means definitely some trees down, potentially some loss of power, things to prepare for overnight. and then the heavy rain on top of that with flood watches ag

start and for the sierra nevada, it might be an easy drive up there right now. don't expect that drive home to be quite as nice as we see snow on saturday and sunday. it's all part of this massive system moving its way down from the northwest, the up in the gulf of alaska and bringing with it some arctic cooled air. that's a lot of snowfall. good powdery snow for your skiing up in the sierra nevada. just not the best for your travels. really anywhere. today stays consistently dry tomorrow morning around 06:00am could see a couple of sprinkles for the bay area. really starting to kick up around 08:00am for the north bay, though, some heavier rain. this line of showers coming along a cold front boundary which is also going to result in cooler temperatures. the rest of the forecast and some heavy rain and strong winds throughout the course of the morning tomorrow post noon, we actually clear up really nice. a nice afternoon for us with lots of sunshine. chance of some thunderstorms for the north bay, but looking slim to none for the rest of us evening hours saturda

now 180% in the northern sierra nevada, the central sierra. you're looking 228% and almost 300% of average in the southern tier. that i mean, just amazing numbers. and of course, as far as our rainfall is concerned, see, all the areas shaded in gold here. these are above normal for the entire season. we've got a lot more stormy weather on the way and well, not only seeing that here, but we're seeing that across most of california. now, that is good news for water sources going ahead. guys, back to you. well, thanks for us. recent atmospheric rivers brought record amounts of snow to the sierra. as we just talked about while it has caused some travel issues. >> the more snow we get, the closer you are to coming out of the drought. according to central sierra snow lab, the storms themselves haven't been too out of the ordinary for the region, but the consistency and relentless nature of them coming back to back to back. that is what is making this season so different. the lab says he eventually snow melt will no doubt help reduce fuel loads in ou

people in the sierra dig out. another storm is already rolling in an atmospheric river is expected to bring several more feet of snow and lots of rain. there's concerns over snowmelt and flooding. this is going to be a wet wild ride right now. kevin cooper cooper tahoe resident and ski experts said they are bracing for potentially hazardous conditions , he said. this type of moisture could turn the snowpack into what's known as sierra cement. so think of snow. it's like a like a like a cake right. there's a lake. they're all winter long. we've got multiple layers. this heavy, wet stuff is going to compress down, which could trigger large avalanches in and around the region. some ski resorts are closing due to the severe weather. this includes heavenly, northstar sierra at tahoe and kirkwood. koop said the weight of the heavy snowpack could load down houses and other buildings. the south lake tahoe fire department shared pictures of a roof collapse which left this building red tagged officials are urging people to

pack it on now, southern sierra 260% of average snowpack central sierra 223% of average.the northern sierra nearly double what we normally see at this time of year typically are snowpack will peak at april first. and we've got another big system next week that will add additional snow pack higher up and a lot more rainfall to the bay area to. we're looking at a clear, dry day for both today. so if you need to be heading up to the sierra today is a good chance to get up there. you got a window ahead of next week's rainfall that returns. we do have rain showers still hanging on for southern california. those are starting to diminish, though. flooding risk will diminish for the bay area today as water levels start to normalize a little bit. and of course the ground it can absorb more and more of that moisture. so we will have a chance to dry out for a few days before we see another dousing of heavy rainfall into next week. and our first time in a while, we haven't seen a single advisory up in the sierra winds a whole lot calmer than they have been few breezy spots near the c

the sierra nevada, we're seeing heavy snow returning up there. this is one of the last low elevation snow falls we're seeing in the sierra before a warmer system will be reintroducing some rainfall into the snowy slopes and resulting in a lot of melt occurring and a risk of flooding. the bay area, the area quieting things down. now we've got a couple of snow flurries remaining around mount hamilton. a few light sprinkles around milpitas low-pressure area still centered up with us. we're still in this cooler air mass, but on our doorstep, a much warmer air mass and atmospheric river. that's funneling this moisture plume right to the bay area. a big warmup comes along with it. that means snow level retreating to ever higher elevations and those lower elevation feet of snow that we had been seeing melting off along with the multiple inches of rainfall coming along with it, posing the risk of flooding. today, though, we're just taking a breather. before we get there, a good chance to get outside. do some storm preps if you need to just enjoy maybe ge

central valley and on up into the sierra. speaking of the sierra, look at how narrow that strip a blue is. that's your snowfall. just the very highest of elevations up there, the foot hills. it's heavy rain. and that is going to be the biggest issue from the system is the fact that we are seeing rain in spots that had been seeing snow right now. some of our heaviest of rain is about to work its way back into san francisco as well as marine county. you see those heavy pockets of rain right there, stretching now from the richmond district of san francisco across the golden gate out into the marine had winds and on up into point rays. all of this is going to shift further inland. so areas like sandra fell and as well as nevado richmond. eventually san francisco all looking at impact from this little spot of heavy rainfall that is about to make its way onshore. south bay, as are most active right now. we are seeing some heavy showers in the santa clara valley as well as up into the santa cruz mountains. current temperatures are m

mud says its reservoirs like party in the sierra. we're looking great precipitation in its watershed. he's already greater than average. and while the agency has already removed and 8% drought surcharge, no decision yet about rolling back its 10% mandatory water conservation. we'll see how the numbers look, it's possible that will start shifting maybe from a drought emergency to a conservation state of mind. decisions on mandatory conservation are expected to come sometime in april. and even if those water restrictions are lifted, it doesn't mean it's time to go get that green lawn again and start ripping out here. drop resilient plants. that's because despite our wintry weather this year. >> droughts have become more common than not in california. >> could be next year. the year after we could start seeing dry conditions again, you just never know. so why not make those changes term instead of, you know, reacting every time we get into a drought out of a drought for a year and back into it. >> dan kerman kron, 4 news. >> all right.

we do have snowfall increasing up in the sierra nevada.y be seeing some blizzard conditions up there at the highest peaks. much of that rainfall that we had seen earlier. the heaviest stuff is transitioned out of the central valley. so those of us in the bay area are starting to catch a few breaks in there. you can see a little pocket of moderate rain right here. then a around the tri valley as well as right here through marin county on up through portions of sonoma and napa counties. so definitely becoming spotty are in at this point forward. we will see pockets of heavy rain, especially in the north bay in down in the santa cruz mountains. but most of us will be looking at at least lighter showers and only temporary showers to nothing like the widespread in very heavy stuff we saw this morning. the catch is winds pick up into the middle of the day today and that will keep you inside more than anything says around evening commute tonight. 05:45pm pockets of heavy rain here and there. so do watch for those some darker clouds passing along.

the sierra snow lab has recorded more than 52 inches of snow.rence is here wants you said actually running out of places to put the snow. yeah, normal. you'll get these storm systems come by. and all of a sudden is you get this time of year, we start to warm up the temperature. the snow melts. >> what goes back into the streams and back into the lake and elsewhere. but it's just too cold up there right now. so that snow is falling and it just keeps falling. just mounds and mounds of snow really with nowhere to put it. and we're seeing just a ton of snow again coming down across the sierra nevada. here's a look at i-80 at castle peak. of course close. you see some of the signs now starting to be buried in all that snow. it is really been coming down. and of course, some very gusty winds to go along with that some white out conditions across the sierra nevada. here's the very latest on the doppler radar. you can see the snow level really way down, probably going to be down about 1000 maybe 1500 feet overnight tonight. yeah, it is cold out there, t

northern sierra, 150, central 198. southern sierra 236. they're higher because some of the storms in early january were pointed right there toward the southern sierra. we'll talk about the totals in a bit, but let's get the rain in here. up over two inches in santa rosa. over ten inches in oakland, the highest surplus. over 8 inches in san francisco. plus 6.9 inches in concord and over an inch in san jose. everybody is a hundred percent and/or better. the storm system we had yesterday, really the past couple days is moving off to the south, pushing in to southern nevada. also still hanging out in southern california. plus, we're slot right now. that's enabled that sunshine and to make it so beautiful. but because we have more of those clear skies for tomorrow morning, just a little bit of cloud cover, mainly clear, it's going to allow temperatures to drop. so looking good, starting off at 41. as we head through tomorrow, numbers wl warm up by 3 to 6 degrees. that had make it nice in the afternoon with the sunshine putting us to 60 in los g

all of us are under flood watches from this continued rain in the sierra. nevada continues to be under winter storm warnings. another 2 to 3 feet of snow on donner summit. lower elevations, more snow melts more runoff and that's more potential mlooding down into those lower elevations. as i mentioned, 60's for high temperatures, which is going to be early in the day. we actually see some cooler air pushing in behind this atmospheric river. one of the reasons why it is set to be so windy today. that's actually going help us out a lot the next couple of days, though, wednesday and thursday, much less muggy feeling and a whole lot clear skies. great days to be getting outside capitalizing on some things you may have delayed because of the weather friday for saint patrick's day. also looking, alright, chance of showers, but nothing like today. relatively calm weekend before we kick things back into gear. next week and seeing likely yet another atmospheric river towards midweek of next week. well, we just got to get through today and then we have brighter days.
