good time to go up to the sierra was this weekend. the dry conditions, chilly temperatures, cold nights, all the snow that fell this week. locked in with that cold weather up there across the sierra. and this is pretty interesting. on the satellite view you can actually see all the snow there across the central and southern sierra, courtesy of the storms this week. but notice we're not seeing any incoming storms right now. once you lose the clouds and the moisture, which typically kind of acts like a blanket, you bring in the cool, dry air, you get mornings like this with upper 20s and low 30s across our inland valleys for tomorrow morning, temperatures rebounding during the day, similar to what we had today. mid to upper 50s from san francisco to oakland. might get closer to 60 around south san jose andpper 50s down towards santa cruz. now the pattern change should occur as we get into tuesday night and wednesday. you begin to see rain approaching the coast, and right now the timing looks like thursday as the peak impact for rain and

there's a fresh coat of snow in the sierra from yesterday's storm. the ski resorts are reporting up to three feet of new snow. if you're planning to travel to the area, know that driving conditions may not be easy. chains are required on highway 50 and interstate 80. caltrans and chp advising all drivers traveling to the sierra this weekend. you got to be careful out there. motorists who traveled to the sierra last night say driving conditions and visibility were very bad. >> road conditions are honestly super bad. visibility is kind of nothing. didn't see anybody on the roads, but the plows are doing their jobs. >> it's been slow. it was closed at emigrant gap for about 45 minutes. >> well, caltrans says slow down in snowy conditions and when chain controls are in effect, the maximum speed should be no faster than 30 miles an hour. all right, here's a live look now. highway 50 at twin bridges. and you can see right there. it's not snowing too badly right now, but you can bet the roads are pretty icy. so you're going to have to take it easy right now

we also have have a warnings in the sierra along with all of that.e heavy snow, but also the gusty winds. we could see gusts as high as 100 miles per hour on some of the sierra mountain tops. that's going to blow around that 2 to 4 feet of snow resulting in some very high drifts and some whiteout conditions in a few areas, mostly today into early tomorrow. that's why i say wait a little bit longer tomorrow to be heading up during the afternoon. again, multiple feet of snow in the sierra multiple inches of rain for the bay area. we do have flood warnings now again, west of santa rosa as well as major area flooding on up in the santa cruz mountains. this is an area that's already seen upwards of 4 inches of rainfall and is now going to continue to see it. so very small and small streams down in the santa cruz mountains 50's to 60's for your daytime highs today and we are going to be staying in that range of numbers through the forecast. what we're not staying with, though, is the rain. we're getting it out of the way before such a busy weekend. valenti

lot of snow coming down in the sierra and a lot more ahead for the sierra. in fact, they've yet to even see their heaviest just yet widespread showers for most of us. it's actually comparatively calm in the north bay. you're going to get a late morning reprieve from the rainfall, but it sure does pick up midday today. and that is a secondary wave right here that could come along even with some isolated thunderstorms. some really strong winds and pockets of downpours through the afternoon through your evening commute and right up into the evening tonight, all this does come along with those strong winds and those high wind warnings. as i've been mentioning tomorrow, we clear things out really quick and your valentine's day forecast is actually gorgeous as will be really the rest of the weekend. now, the sierra is going to hold onto snowfall longer than the bay will hold on to our rainfall. snowfall up. there remains all day long today and for much of the day tomorrow, if you do have plans on heading to the sierra on friday later in the day is a little bit bet

southern sierra.ut we're getting there right. and we have more snow in the forecast. ski report, some heavenly. they're very happy. the skiers are delighted as we have not only 57 inches at the summit, but 7 inches of new snow. and so it goes resort after resort palisades reporting. lots trails lifts open and 17 inches of new snow. so it's fabulous. daytime temperatures across across lake tahoe. chilly enough to keep that snow from melting. so in the 30's to low 40's and yes, what the sierra forecast shows a lot of sunshine for tomorrow and the next and the next day. and then things will start to change even as a change here in the bay area. bay bridge on this side. well, again, it's a sunshine for the couple of days. we have a respite before the next storm comes and come. it will because here it comes right across the pacific ocean and you see it counter clockwise area. that's the area of low pressure really winding up. and it looks like some of the computer models don't agree on. this looks to me as

just piling up over the sierra nevada. even a lake level.hey're probably gonna see a foot, maybe a foot and a half of snow. so it's been coming down as still does. in fact, your chain upon 50 80, just a rough ride to get up there. but i think tomorrow things should begin to open up. winter storm warning still in effect until a friday night. but well, i think these are really ease up by tomorrow afternoon. and that should really allow things to get going as far as the roads are concerned. something to watch out for the national weather services issued and avalanche warning across the great lake tahoe area enough in the major ski resorts. they maintain those slopes very well. but you get out back if you go anywhere across the sierra nevada, boy, you've got a you can trigger an avalanche really, really easily. and these kind of conditions to all snow early on and then giving way to some partly cloudy skies as we head throughout the weekend and some dry conditions. but what a nice time to get up to the slopes. all right. it is still windy out th

kara finnstrom reports from sierra madre in l.a. county. >>>>we're up in an area called mary's market in sierra madre that was really hit hard by this round of rain. i want to move out of the way because they're trying to pull out a car that was just submerged in dirt here earlier today. a flow of mud and debris came out of the hillsides, just above all from the eaton fire, and not only submerged. a number of cars here also went into some of the homes. so we've been speaking with city leaders here. they tell us that they will be going home to home in this area and assessing the damage. there are other areas of sierra madre that were hit hard as well. one of them was put into a shelter in place order overnight because there was so much mud and debris right outside of homes. we spoke a little bit earlier with one of the men who lives in this community here, and saw all of the mud topping over a debris basin just above where he lives. >>>>rain was coming, and then suddenly the water was flowing down and it's like, well, it's getting a little b

but notice how it's the northern sierra that's seeing the majority of the snow. lot less to the south. now in terms of the reservoirs, this also good news 84% of average. that's the state's four largest reservoirs. same time last year we were at 78%. the biggest gain. trinity ke, one of the state's two largest reservoirs, 66% of average, whereas trinity lake, whereas trinity lake. and it's right there, right up there in the northern part of the map here in northern california. okay, so it was 66% of capacity last year. this year it's up to 83. and that's really where the focus of the top rainfall has been with this particular rain season. areas north of interstate 80. but down in southern california things have been unfortunately quite dry. we saw the wildfires, and they're still way behind on some of the precipitation to the south. yeah, but it's also dangerous for them to get a lot of precipitation because of those burn scars. correct? absolutely. now will they bempacted? i know we're getting that atmospheric river and that should help out even more with these

some lightning strikes detected as well, approaching the southern sierra and a lot of snow in the sierra. we're showing you this. we have multiple flood advisories in place right now. still in place in the short term, out in parts of the east bay. that's out until 645. that means at least some minor flooding is occurring and then a bit more, you know, impactful here with these flood warnings in place. this is the alameda creek that flood warning until 6:00 this evening and then up in the north bay as well. we have this flood warning in place for parts of sonoma county that's out until 830 tonight. so here is the radar coverage. these are all of the storm reports up and down the bay area from this morning, especially indicating some strong winds, the flooding and also some mudslides as well. here's the coverage up in the north bay right around saint helena. we have some pretty good rain showers to track, some intensity, higher intensities, and then out in parts of the east bay right around the concord area. looks like the action is about to get pick up in intensity in the short term right

the sierra get snow. the whole party gets going. we do start to clear out a little bit later in the evening on friday. and of course, that will be our valentine's day date night for some of you. so this is that first hit of rain tuesday to wednesday. not much to speak of. but here we go. this is that out i was talking about as we get into thursday. you know, you see some of these totals could potentially be 2 to 4 inches of rain. so it is going to be a little tricky on thursday. i do think that some of our creeks and streams will have to be monitored and this is going to be, you know, rain on top of pretty saturated ground that we've got already. so that thursday is the one that concerns me the most. having said that we are going to be kind of dealing with this for the next few days. back to you. well, the cdc says this year's flu season is the most intense. it's been in 15 years. health officials say 8% of er visits across the country. >> our for flu and california were just beginning to see flu levels start to rise. >> about a mon

so the snowfall is still a factor in the sierra.ve a flood advisory in place for the santa cruz, for santa cruz county until 1:00 this afternoon. so we'll see if this gets extended into beyond 1:00. but that's where we're tracking some rain across portions of the region. here's some rain right now in portions of the north bay, cloverdale to santa rosa to petaluma. novato. still some scattered rain to talk about the coverage right now. as you can see, a few showers closer to san francisco and then some rainfall closer to the east bay. and then here's some of the action right around the santa cruz mountains and especially south of san jose, right around the ride for morgan hill and gilroy, right around 101. we check out the wind reports. it has been a bit too gusty out there, as you can check out oakland gusting to 30 miles an hour. napa winds gusting to 28. so there is a bit of a breeze in some neighborhoods. half moon bay 35. and look at san jose winds out of the south at a gusting to 44mph. here is our live camera this afternoon. w

and then heavy sierra snow coming in before the weekend. by hour outlook, which actually shows not all of the bay area will see that rain coming in this evening. but this is at 6:00. we see marin county on southward seeing some rain. and then that quickly tapers off before sunrise tomorrow. just staying cloudy throughout the day. and then on late tomorrow night into early thursday, we see the waves of heavy rain coming in and during that time period, getting the brunt of the storm on thursday into friday. that's when we may see a lot of those impacts starting to continue to add up. so here's a look at how much rainfall we could see. a lot of our models showing the highest rainfall totals will actually be in the south bay, as well as the south county into the santa cruz mountains. but still looking at some significant rainfall in the north bay that's already had all of their yearly rainfall to date. and so we don't need another two inches. but this will help out some of the reservoirs that across the state are, on average, running about 84%

underneath all this snow in the sierra-at-tahoe report.tioned 5 inches, that's just there locally. some spots could see 6 feet of snow from when the storm started until tomorrow when it comes to an end. so this has been impactful for all of us so far. we're dealing with flooding conditions here locally. strong winds and we're under high wind watches and warnings right now. and as we take a look at where we're at on the map, we're not out of the clear just yet and i mean some of the thickest rain is still to come throughout here in the bay area. before we're gearing up for some heavier snow up into the sierra throughout the afternoon. from the exact same atmospheric river. now let's dive straight into what's to come as we head into the afternoon. because you take a look at the first alert doppler. and it's lit up with green and yellow showing that light to moderate rain with purple all the way up into the sierra. showing the snow. we zoom in just a little bit closer to home and it's a mess out there on roads. it's slick and it's cold and it

up in the sierra.been a busy day for the chp and caltrans crews as well as they've responded to a number of spinouts amid some heavy snow up in the mountains. here is a live look tonight at the conditions along interstate 80 westbound near donner lake, and you see cars traveling along the roadway there. and it looks like obviously everything cleared out in terms of snow, but the roadways obviously wet and a good idea to take it slow in the snow. chain controls in effect, though, for stretches of interstate 80 in both directions. and obviously those chain controls come, you know, come into effect. and they remove those as well at a moment's notice. so always good to check ahead before you head up to up to the mountains. let's bring in meteorologist mark tamayo. with more on the rain and the snow we're going to see here over the next few hours and into tomorrow morning either. >> alex. yeah, it looks like some light rain in that shot in the sierra. and what's interesting is the snow levels are going up r
