they started turning off power in the sierra foothills around 2:00 this afternoon. places like the peninsula, they could be impacted. overnight stly. but as you said, it takes time to get it back up and running. they can't just turn it back on. we could have another wind event, possibly over the weekend. >> yeah. sunday looks a bit dicey at this point. so we'll have to see about that. and it's so interesting, isn't it, that they can flip the power off no problem but turning it back on is a little more challenging because they don't want to just turn it back on in the event that a line has been damaged in the wind. that defeats the purpose of the power shutoff. if you then risk some kind of fire danger. of course this is all very controversial. a lot of customers not happy about this at all who lost power last time. several hundred thousand people. governor gavin newsom has just been pounding on pg&e and blasting them for putting us in this predicament by not repairing the lines, deferring maintenance, and he believes creating this situation in a way that was not res

>>a few hours ago we initiated a public safety power shutoff across portions of the sierra foothills and the north bay. we also expect to turn off power for small parts of san mateo and kern counties. after midnight tonight probabay around 01:00am in total the shut offs will affect about 179,000 customers and touch portions of 17 counts. we made this dangerous combination of hot dry and ndy conditions. in those areas are just mentioned which together increased risk of sparks on the electric system which in turn has the potential to cause catastrophic wildfire. we don't ever want to any more of those. and so that's why we do these kind of things. i want to note that not everyone who is out of power will experience the strong winds that scott talked about. this is because the electric system relies on power lines of working together to provide electricity across cities counties in entire state something in the system as a large spider web of lies going in every direction. and regardless of whether you're seeing windy conditions in your location. dangerous conditions affecting the syste

the coast in the southern portion of the sierra foothills. we would anticipate deenergizing at 7 pm on saturday. that is the sequence of steps as we currently forecasted. one saturday. lastly we do forecast a reverse santa ana type of a weather phenomenon that we have continued to see during this month. in kern county. we anticipate that to occur on sunday at 11 am. as i stated our goal here is to continue to ensure that we are minimizing the impact to our customers. as well as minimizing the impact from a duration perspective. so the times here are subject to change. we continue to monitor the weather forecast. if things move up we potentially can move things up. if we can have the opportunity to further delay because we see multiple hours delay in the weather forecast. that may impact the area. that is exactly what we are going to do. we are asking customers to prepare for outages of 48 hours or longer. given the potential duration that is currently being forecasted for this event. at the moment we are forecasting that the weather is going

and the southern portion of the sierra foothills. we immediately began patrolling and restoring our customers at that time. the remaining areas of the north bay and the northern part of the sierra foothills remain out of service until weather conditions improve at noon which was consistent with forecasts. as of noon shortly after all counties with the exception of kern were declared all clear. we have been restoring customers ever since. i will say that kern county itself the all clear for kern is actually projected to occur at noon tomorrow. we are going to file the same cadence and monitor weather conditions. if there is an opportunity to pull that in if winds decrease earlier than forecasted we will begin that restoration sequence as well. we restored approximately 100 to 125,000 customers. since these all clears have been issued. we have roughly 56,000 customers out of service still. the numbers are dropping fast. our crews are making great progress. that is possible due to the amount of resources we have out there. we have over

the sierra foothills, this in pocket that was in the north bay and then two individual counties, san mateo county on the peninsula and kern county down in the southern end of the state. essentially, all of those customers are restored at this time. the exception is in skmonoma counsel it county. we have about 1,000 customers as of this press briefing that remain out of service. that's primarily due to the kincaid fire that is an active fire that cal fire is in charge of the incident. we are reporting in under their command. we do believe that we wil be able to reduce the impacted customers to roughly 700 customers by the end of the evening. it's important that we work together with cal fire. they own the scene. they, they own the entire foot print of the perimeter and the adjacent areas to that perimeter, and we want to stay out of their way and support them wherever we can. and while we, they might the fire, in addition to that, we want to look for opportunities where we could resotore service. so, from a numbers perspective, we had 6,000 on the ground resources and 42 helicopters t

in the north valley in the sierra foothills we continued to see winds and experience winds asearly as late this afternoon so we didn't get the all clear to do the safety inspections until later this afternoon. and the same holds true for the southern part of our service territory in the current area. also within the north valley we had airspace restrictions and because of the number of helicopter controls set to fly in those areas, we have 44 helicopters we dispatched as a result of this and some of the rugged terrain that our teams are facing to do the safety inspections of the lines and do the restorations, that has contributed to some of the delays in the areas we discussed. we will continue to resume the work at daybreak in the morning. there's a lot of work that will happen tonight as well and throughout the night the work we can do in a safe manner so we can continue to minimize the impact. one of the other things that bill discussed and shared a few photos in regards to the damage that we have experienced and observed so far. one thing i would remind us of as the safety inspect

. >> the utility says they restored power to 50,000 people in the sierra foothills. >>> it is 4:40. talking about that wildfire risk is something that our weather team has been tracking for the last few days and this morning. mike has a look at the day ahead and what the risk is now. >> the risk is there. it will be there until 5:00 this evening. we're in the height of it from about 4:00 this morning, 40 minutes ago, to 10:00. you still have to be vigilant even once the sun comes up. we're still in a danger situation, just not as dangerous as when it's dark. i want to talk about the forecast a little bit. if you're stepping out, this is what the winds do. look what they do. we have 39 in yucaipa. 44 in cloverdale. 46 in mountain view. not affected by the winds, but places like san francisco, 65 degrees right now. our average high is 70. winds are keeping our temperatures up. 52 in hayward, concord, san ramon at 58. the peninsula forecast, a few high clouds during the afternoon hours, pretty comfortable temperatures, starting off at 54 at 7:00. we'll hit about 70 at noon. hanging out

from reading into the bay area over to the santa cruz mountains and the sierra foothills. the advisory starts early tomorrow morning and goes through thursday afternoon. 36 hours of this and that includes the northbay hills and valley locations and east bay hills. you notice right inside the bay, the bayside communities over san francisco, the peninsula and along the coastline not included in this red flag warning. it does look like it will be breezy everywhere but stronger winds will be in the valleys and over our health. this is the system dropping in. it is associated with our cooldown and the winds. here is a look at wednesday morning. noticed by the evening hours winds are widespread and gusty over the hills. darker shades of red and purple indicating wind gusts of 40-50 miles per hour. as quick as it moves and it moves out. there's thursday afternoon and the winds drop off considerably. we have 60 degrees in san francisco and mid 80s in livermore. still a warm one for our inland communities. not quite as hot as we have been. here's a look at overnight low's. mid 40s

for example, in the north valley and the sierra foothills, we continue to see winds and experience winds as early as late this afternoon. we didn't get the all-clear to do safety inspectons until later this afternoon. and the same holds true for the southern part of our service territory in the kern area. also within the north valley, because of the number of helicopter patrols that can fly in those areas, we have 44 helicopters dispatched as a result of this and some of the rugged terrain that our teams are facing to do the safe inspections of the lines and do that's contributed to some of the delays in the areas that we've discussed. and we're going to continue to resume the work at daybreak in the morning. there's a lot of work that's going to happen tonight as well and throughout the night. the work that we can do in a safe manner so that we continue to minimize the impact. one of the other things that bill had discussed and shared a few photos in regards to the damage that we have experienced and observed so far, one thing i would remind us of is that the safety inspections continue
