so he was at this hospital in western sierra leone. he is worried because they're on the border with guinea. he calls all of the young doctors he trained in the country to come there. he convinced a lost nurses to come for training on what should they do should ebola show up in sierra leone. they came but within a few weeks there was woman who was pregnant who came to the hospital. she miscarried and she couldn't stop bleeding. she kept bleeding, moved her to the surgical ward. that there was possible a hemorraghic fever that is in that area but also ebola. she died and tested positive for ebola. at this point it blows up in the region. ebola is spreading rapidly. nurses have to take care of them. they don't have gloves and protective gear. commercial shippers stopped flying. hard to get protective gear in the country. they are using tarps to protect themselves. this is walls of one of the hospitals, placerred with memorial services for nurses, ambulance driverrers and technicianses who have died and they don't have protective gear and

i was in liberia, sierra leone, central america, i did that for a long time. this book represents for me a move from emergency relief to a more general question about development. the book is really about whether the current mainstream model of development can work and whether the optimism surrounding it which i referred to is warranted or justifiable or not. i thought because in the end the starkest measure of poverty is hunger, i try to write a book about development and the debate over development, the effort to reduce or end extreme poverty, to end hunger which are the stated goals of major un agencies, the great philanthropies or the melinda gates foundation and they really believe this is the first generation in human history that can end extreme poverty and hunger. i lay my temperamental cards on the table. i am sure if you spent 15 years of your one and only life thinking about war, watching war up close, you are not the most optimistic people, but i nonetheless found it very startling as i began to think this through, took me seven years to write this

similarly in a few case studies in sierra leone where you had norwegian peacekeepers and they brought women in and they taught women how to both fight physically and secure themselves economically, you did not see a resurgence of extremist violence. so, what you have here is a really three-pronged phenomenon. you have one where women are setting the example of being equals with men, where when you have western forces or stabilizing forces, even if it's from a neighboring country, stabilizing forces coming in, you have men and women fighting alongside each other from day one, you have the precedent set and the example set that there are expectations that tends to bring women into the community, brings women into the discussion of what does security and what does stability mean for me when you leave and how do we ensure the stable and security when we leave? what this does is you legitimize women as stakeholders. you legitimize women as stakeholders in their own security. you legitimize women has stakeholders in their economic running and you legitimize women as political stakeholders.
