it was harder crossing the sierra nevadas than it was the rockies.kiing country today, but, know, we lift in softer times than they did. by then, one of the most famous incidents in the history of american cannibalism had taken place there. the donner party set off from independence, missouri, took the california cutoff and were partway up the sierra nevada mountains when a very, very severe blizzard snowed them in. they weren't capable of going further anyforward and neither could they get down the mountains because the snow was too thick. many of them died and the survivors ate the bodies of their relatives who died in order to survive. of course, news of this spread -- also spread very rapidly so anyone who was going to the gold rush over the so-called dopper route is the route taken today by interstate 80. you still go that way if you cross the mountains. it's hard, but it's relatively the easiest way, knew that this was the kind of territory that they were crossing. very, very rapidly, between the first discoveries in 1848 and early 1849, someth

it was coming from up in the foothills of the sierra nevada mountains. he sent an assistant up the river, the american river, up to a place called coloma and asked him to design and build a sawmill. the american river is flowing fast enough that the water can turn a waterwheel and it's attached to saw blades so the lumber could be brought there and sent down the river to sutters fort. one of the things you have to do to make an effective sawmill is divert the river down the mill race, a flume. he found flakes of gold, metal flakes. he reported back to sutter saying, found gold. sutter said, don't tell anybody. we will keep it secret. they could foresee. you know how bad everyone is at keeping secrets. don't you know from your own experience? the only way to have a secret is to never tell anyone. somehow, the secret gets out. that's exactly what happened in this case. it wasn't long before the news got back east. it spread very rapidly all over the world with the result that a massive incursion of people into. >> kyle: -- california began to take place. t

see the thunderstorms begin to pop up over the sierra nevada. that is all part of that monsoon.have just watching this as these fires continue to burn so far there's been mainly a southwesterly wind which kicks the smoke mainly to the northeast. but that's changed a bit. and as these past pressure pattern change, especially as we head to closer and closer to fault. these fires continue to burn. they're likely to bring some more smoke back into the bay area. here's our latest smoke model and you'll notice as we head through time here right now. most that smoke located in far northern california and up over the sierra nevada and then as we take you through the night tonight. you start to see you see a little further to the south. you get that little northerly component to the wind. there you go. maybe seeing some of that haze especially in parts of the north bay by tomorrow of the day in the afternoon could see some of that work its way back in our direction. but the good news is again, this is going to stay aloft and was like going to an air quality issue, but it will turn skies.

it's right next to all these different places, next to the sierra nevada, only an hour away. going out into the wild, backpacking, and connecting to these places. >> those of us who are on the east coast or somewhere in the country other than california, we're watching these wildfires. it can feel rather unreal. what has been your experience with wildfires so far? >> well, just last year the creek fire, which was also a very huge fire in california, hit right next to where i live in fresno, california. for weeks there was just this thick smog that hung over the valley because one side is the cascade mountains and the other is the sierra nevada. it affects people in the central valley greatly. and we see with the dixie pyre and last year with the creek fire, the forest near my hometown, they all just burned down and are completely gone by now. >> give us a sense how that impacts air quality. >> yeah. so the central valley, you know, the air quality here is already very poor because, like i said, the cascade on one side, the sierra nevada on the other. so for weeks we've had, y

lot of that wildfire smoke has been concentrated up in the sierra nevada itself and pushed out to the north and east. in fact, yesterday lake tahoe had the worst air quality in north due in part to those fires burning up there in the sierra nevada. we're sitting right now in the bay area. certainly nothing close to that. what you are seeing out there as far as gray is concerned, is low gray associated with marine layer, which is push to undo those do this westerly winds and much like the past couple of days. we're going to be off to a fairly gray start this morning. you can see the worst of air quality to our north and east bay area still faring very well as far as very bay. as far as air quality is concerned, that's something we can expect for. one more day because as we move into tomorrow, we've got some big changes, a breakdown for you here in just a second as of this morning. all of us across the region are in the green. you can see that we do have a little patch of yellow and just the very, very for this eastern reaches of alameda county. well past the tri valley. now we do have

winds, though, have resulted in a red flag warning for not just lake tahoe but the rest of the sierra nevada. this is going to remain in effect through the afternoon today. winds gusting out of the southwest as high as 35 miles per hour. that's fanning the flames in the direction of those populated areas around the south lake and that's why we do have such concern the rapid spread of fires up there today in the sierra nevada. as far as we go back here at home. those winds are really just going to help us out. allowing some ocean cool there to penetrate further into the bay. this is going to keep temperatures cooler than they were yesterday. 60's for coastal spots 70's for most of our bayshore cities 80's for most of the rest of us. but a couple of 90's do remain like you see in livermore in antioch, concord. you'll 88 today. fremont sudden i 79 oakland. really nice at 72 degrees. a look ahead at the rest of our forecast shows tomorrow thursday and friday being the coolest days of this forecast daytime highs even cooler than they are about to be today. so really mild finish to the week. we're

the downside we're of got red flag warnings going up across much of the sierra nevada in northern california. expecting some strong gusty winds. maybe some gusts of 35 to 40 miles per hour that is very dangerous. in an active fire situation. even now they're looking at 29 mile an hour winds and chester in 16 in the quincy. so going to watch that very closely tomorrow. the same time that low is going to be coming on shore making its way into northern california. see the clockwise or counterclockwise rotation around that low. that is going to possibly bring some of that smoke drifting back into parts of the bay area, especially in the part of the good news is it is going to stay aloft. that means thousands of feet up in the atmosphere. not down. the service were breathing are fresh air down below are looking okay. but looks like up above going to be some hazy conditions back will be hazy around the bay area tomorrow in the north bay and also parts of the east bay and the south bay looking good, though, along the coastline. but we're going to see more of an offshore wind. and then i think as we

monday morning through tuesday night in the mountains here, so this is a very bad scenario for the sierra nevada into monday and tuesday. there is a look at the fog. 58 in san francisco. 59 mountain view. a chilly 57. this is kingsbury in nevada where you can see the smoke. no relief here for the folks. absolutely horrible air quality. the a qi up to about 500. 62 by the delta. it is still warm, and temperatures well into the 90's. look at the north bay, where numbers are in the low 50's. low clouds and fog. you can still see some of that haze. a day of transition as we have hazy skies inland and hot conditions. air quality improves around the coast. the wind picks out that is going to make for erratic conditions, the upper elevations locally and into the sierra nevada. look at that fog, pulls back to the coast. then it comes right back in and gets swept away monday afternoon. still looking at some haze up in the north bay on monday. the most part, we are going in the right direction. the blue, that is the better air quality. you can see the lighter green, there is still haze around evenn some s

all eyes are up in the sierra nevada.ght here, a view of what we have going on on the northern edge of lake tahoe, which is the clearing of that smoke because winds are pushing all that smoke away from the north side of the lake. and now to the east, the same winds have resulted in the rapid spread of the caldor fire during overnight hours. zooming in on lake tahoe. we will see some of our windy conditions popping up here in a second. now, one of the reasons we do have such rapid growth ride over the crest of the sierra the caldor fire is a significant really steady southwesterly wind that is pushed the fire into more heavily populated areas like myers in south lake tahoe myers really just seeing those pop so far crews of really tried to get in there, make sure to suppress those little pop-up blazes as they do reach down into those lower elevations. belmont's while valley looking at winds consistently all day long today, around 20 miles per hour. here's some visible satellite imagery showing you how those smoke plumes are
