we've got a series of storms that impact the sierra nevada. these are very cold storm. so it's not like it's just snowing over the mount passes. we're you get to the foothills of the sierra nevada. you're talking about a lot of snow. here's a look at the castle peak. a lot of snow piled up on the camera. you can see where the cars kind of pulled off to the side there. so, yeah, they've stopped the westbound trafficking. get up there right now. but you can't get back and may be stuck up there for a while with all the snow coming back to it's coming down all around right now. you can see the snowfall really coming down both 80 50 all the way through the tahoe area. the ridge, the sierra, nevada, but all the way down near plaster bill near grass valley. so yeah, lou, we've got winter storm warnings up, of course, across the sierra nevada, going to see some heavy snow between now and tomorrow morning. but now we're starting to see avalanche warnings. this is until 06:30am, in the morning on saturday. starting see the back country. that's because we've got all the layers of

they are chaining up the the sierra nevada tonight. but the cars are moving up there nicely right now. no restrictions there on 80 or 50, but there's a significant storm system coming in this weekend. and so you've got to be really careful when you travel the high country. here's the very latest on the doppler radar. you can see just some scattered snow showers still over some of the tops of the mountains. but really, this storm is tapering off, but it's going to be a much bigger one that is going to move late on saturday into sunday, expecting some very heavy snow, maybe a couple of feet across some of the higher peaks above 7,000 feet and get this. the winds gusting over 100 miles per hour over the ridge tops, maybe even higher than that. so you could easily see some white out conditions. some blizzard conditions. and of course, if you get stuck in that you may not get dug out for a little while. so you've got to be prepared to head the high you've got a time and you got to check your weather before you go up there. you don't want to

into effect today at 10:00am for the inland upper elevations of the east bay and then for the sierra nevada, we're still under blizzard warnings. winter storm warnings and winter weather watches all the way through 04:00am wednesday. so we've got a busy week ahead of us up in the sierra more snowfall in our very highest elevations in the bay and still adding up multiple feet of snowfall in the sierra on top of what's already been seen. rainfall amounts today will be anywhere from a half of an inch to around 3 quarters of an inch. at most. we're going to add more on top of that tomorrow. and then more on top of that into the weekend and next week, too. so by no means even though we do get a break later this week, are we going to be done with the rain once that break its here? winds will pick up along with that rainfall that moves in later this morning. current temperatures may be chilly, but later on today, upper 40's to low 50's paired with some peeks of sunshine between those dark rain clouds is going to feel a little bit better. it is 30's 40's. for now, though. so definitely bundle up. i

now we do have snowfall across the north coast as well as holding in the sierra nevada. rain for the central valley. and even if you look really close, a lightning strike up there just off the coast offshore, that all heads our direction later on. so the next couple of hours, you're good by 07:00am. a few light sprinkles on the peninsula. but the real rain arrives after that for the north bay 08:00am sonoma county seeing a rush of heavy rain and some really strong winds along with it by 09:00am that's dropped into marine county down into napa county

blizzard warnings up over the sierra nevada locally. we've seen those showers on and off throughout the day. occasionally some thunderstorm. we've had reports of hail and yes, more snow across many of the mountains around the bay area to. but now we're tracking more scattered showers. but some of those showers, we have some pretty good downpours out there right now. look at the cell that is making its way into the east bay up oakland towards lafayette. we've got some very heavy rainfall associated with this one headed toward marauder right now. this likely a thunderstorm you might be getting some hail very soon here and the next few good. but there's more out there as well. we've got some just sweeping across the bay into san mateo. this one cumulonimbus tower here just a few minutes ago. but it looks like that may have collapsed a bit, but they're still more off the coastline. you start to see some of the yellow out there. those are some storm systems that could bring some more gusty winds. some heavy rain and more hail and more snow o

traveling up there in the high sierra nevada. a lot of snow to come. maybe 4, maybe 6 feet of snow across the higher peaks again. but will be really interesting. set of cold air is coming in with these storms. that snow level will be dropping down, maybe all the way down to about 1000 feet. so you can imagine usually you just have to worry about your right as you head toward about 4,000 feet on upwards across the sierra, nevada are so this time of you're going slow going from all the way down to 1000 feet. right now, those roadways are blizzard warnings up as well. you're going to see not only that heavy snow, but now we're talking about some extremely gusty winds moving in across the high country. and you see that all the way along here for mineral to twain all the way into tahoe city, south lake tahoe boy, it's just tough going there in the high country as that snow continues to fall. and so we're going to see some pretty impressive totals. some of the forecast models and some areas in the south lake tahoe. how about that? about 27 inches down in sou

but we are seeing snow up along the north coast of the sierra nevada. and yes, right here in the bay area. seeing a good amount of that right now up in the santa cruz mountains. that's just there right above the south bay. also seeing some snowfall across the sun. oh, great now didn't stick to the road, but we saw some brief flurries are right there on portions of 6.80. also seeing some of it up towards mount diablo, mount hamilton mission peak a little flurry or 2 on mount tam. and i'm going to be watching areas around santa rosa really closely because your temperatures cold enough to be seeing it all the way down on the valley floor up there. we do have winter storm warnings in effect for the north bay mountains, the east bay hills and mountains, as well as the santa cruz and diablo range is those stretch all the way out into the interior of the state as well. just a whole lot going on out there. and one of our coldest arctic plunge is that the state has seen in years allowing so many of us to see this wintry weather uncommon to see this. we are seein

some heavy snowfall in the north coast and even more of that snow up into the sierra nevada still under some winter storm warnings and blizzard warnings up that way. so advising not to travel into the sierra until tomorrow when much better conditions will be seen. as for today, that rainfall moves into the bay area over the next few minutes stays with us through the morning commute and actually picks up in intensity after 07:00am so early risers, you're still going to be running into it. but you are going to be looking at least better conditions that are later. commuters will be. we'll see a break from it starting at around 11:00am after which point a little peek of sunshine between then in around one to 02:00pm when another line of rain and this one coming along with embedded thunderstorms that could produce hail and cloud to ground lightning moves through the bay area anywhere between 1, 02:00pm, to 04:00pm this evening. after that, another break and then unsettled evening that will bring more showers and some pretty low elevation snowfall in the mountains of the south bay, especially

you got to be very, very careful when you go up in the sierra nevada tonight. now the cars moving along just well. no reports of any change we need right now on 50 or 80 up. there you see the cars moving up there. but notice these cars about an average of 5 foot high. notice tall these banks are gives you an idea of all that snow that is piling up there in the high country. what beginning to the season. it's been and they've got a lot more snow on the way right now. we have a couple more snowflakes the day today, but now things kind of settling down up there right now. you can see mostly open now on the donner and also as you make your way further south. but we're going to see a return. some very heavy snow in the next 24 hours. in fact, the storm system that's coming on shore. it is going to pack some extremely gusty winds across the top, maybe 100, maybe 120 miles. plus on some of the ridges and one to 2 feet of snow. so we could see near whiteout conditions the school. rich tops of your head in that direction. you got to be careful, especially late at night

blizzard conditions across the sierra nevada and heavy heavy snow. you're seeing the snow right now. this kind of the remnants of the previous storm system along both 50 80. you see it making its way across the sierra nevada. very low snow. in fact, the snow probably going to be down to about 1000 feet. so you got winter storm warnings along the western. we've also got the blizzard warnings going just outside of pines all the way up in the tahoe as we're going to see that heavy snow developing again tonight and tomorrow and possibly into wednesday morning as well. so a lot of snow going to be falling between now and then very impressive total. some of the higher peaks much as 6 feet. how about bear valley? you're maybe looking at good 3 feet. there, right? south lake tahoe, maybe a couple of feet of snow at lake level and honor the almost 30 inches. and we're just going to keep adding to these totals here. so tuesday, blizzard conditions wednesday morning. yeah, maybe some snow showers left over in the morning and then we'll dry out by the afternoon

if you looked further north, up in the sierra nevadas, they've seen 10 feet and, pekting even more. that could break a 40-year record. if you look in downtown l.a. along the rivers we saw over the weekend, torrential downpour where the weather was a little warmer. it wasn't exactly snow, causing all this erosion and mudslides. you saw the video of the rv falling into the river. apparently three rvs fell in that area. so they had to move those rvs further inland. that's the type of rainfall that l.a. needs but has not been used to. the infrastructure and the landscape hasn't been prepared for it. as we look ahead to the next couple days, another blizzard incoming into the sierra nevadas as well, through southern l.a. we could see 3-7 feet up north as well as more rain fall heading into wednesday. >> michelle, help us make sense what we're seeing here. i know here in the northeast we could get our first bit of measurable snow. >> unfortunately the snow in new york city is not going to be the pretty, fluffy stuff. it will be mixed with sleet, that's later today and into tomorrow. we ha
