and in the sierra nevada. so winter storm warnings have been posted until sunday and well between now and then we could be talking about 6, maybe 8 feet of snow. and then if you look all the way through next week, some forecast 10, maybe 15 feet altogether. so we're talking about a tremendous amount of snow. of course, those heavier snows with this one probably coming above 7,000 feet or so. so tonight, here's a heavy snow, some very gusty winds, ridge line winds. some of those gusts over 100 miles an hour. and the snow levels starting at about 6500. people continue to rise tonight. be careful. traveling up there just wouldn't go if you don't have to do it. i would wait a bit. expect major travel delays if you're headed in that direction and the possibility of flooding. now with all that rain coming down, the melting some of that snow, especially to get below 4,000 feet and in the foothills of the sierra. lawrence, thank you. well, even though some of the ski resorts are set to close tomorrow, there still are

the sierra nevada is also going to be packing up a lot of rainfall in those lower elevations. you had above 7,000 feet in elevation. and that's where you're seeing snowfall. but at lake level at tahoe, that does put temperatures above freezing. that's a mix of rain and snow. and that's going to undo a lot of the snow pack building that we have been doing. you had above that 7,000 feet, multiple feet of snow. and that's the winter storm warnings which are going back into effect tomorrow and lasting through sunday. so not the easiest of travel conditions up into the sierra. as for the bay area, we have our own issues. flood advisories, flood watches taking effect tomorrow through sunday across the entirety of the bay area as well as out of the central valley to so something to note as we move into the weekend by no means your best travel weekend better we can to stay at home. get some movies planned, maybe get some stuff or at done around the house. temperatures will rise as this atmospheric river arrives. you can see highs in the 60's for a lot of the bay as we move into the we

the sierra nevada, we're seeing heavy snow returning up there. this is one of the last low elevation snow falls we're seeing in the sierra before a warmer system will be reintroducing some rainfall into the snowy slopes and resulting in a lot of melt occurring and a risk of flooding. the bay area, the area quieting things down. now we've got a couple of snow flurries remaining around mount hamilton. a few light sprinkles around milpitas low-pressure area still centered up with us. we're still in this cooler air mass, but on our doorstep, a much warmer air mass and atmospheric river. that's funneling this moisture plume right to the bay area. a big warmup comes along with it. that means snow level retreating to ever higher elevations and those lower elevation feet of snow that we had been seeing melting off along with the multiple inches of rainfall coming along with it, posing the risk of flooding. today, though, we're just taking a breather. before we get there, a good chance to get outside. do some storm preps if you need to just enjoy maybe get

and that is a lot of it up in the sierra nevada. so it's going to feel or streams, swelling, small streams, especially resulting in flooding risk from the valley. the sierra nevada foothills all the way down here into the bay area. futurecast shows the arrival of rainfall later this morning, especially for the northbound around more north bay are on the 7 o'clock hour pushes through after that becomes rather have the points into the afternoon. you see those pockets of heavy rainfall, yellow, orange and even read coming into the bay area towards the afternoon. the very heaviest of it overnight tonight as we make our way into early tomorrow morning, torrential rainfall during those predawn hours of tomorrow continues through tomorrow as well. so tomorrow friday looks like a very wet one. could see some flooding risk and showers do continue off and on through friday on into saturday, too. so just a lot going on here. atmospheric rivers can bring a lot of rainfall and spread it out over the matter of a few days. by the time we reach tom

we've had a record snow pack up in the sierra nevada. now you're seeing a system that's melting a lot of that at lower elevations and multiple inches of rain. so we have flash flood warnings up and down the western sierra front as we do see some of the smaller rivers and streams starting to fill up really quickly. we do have i-80 still open, but it is excessively windy and just very slushy and wet up there tonight as temperatures drop back below freezing, we're likely to have some ice formation and lot of roads. not a weekend. you want to be up in the sierra. this is the biggest impact from the storm. in fact, you just see a little strip of blue at the very crest of the sierra nevada. that's because snow level has crept to higher and higher elevations and that heavy rain washing out a lot of that dense snow pack on many of those slopes. as for the bay area, things have quieted down pretty substantially for the north bay. still a few sprinkles here and there for the peninsula in the east bay. most of our rainfall south of san jose and 101,

we still do technically of winter storm warnings through sunday up in the sierra nevada. snow levels at the very highest of elevations up there. lower elevations. that's where all the runoff and melt is occurring. and that's why the sierra has the biggest impact from the system in a negative way. losing a lot of the progress that we made. his first snowpack goes and at lake level, it's a slushy mess. during daytime hours at lake tahoe and a cold one at night could result in some really icy conditions. this is not a lot of reason to be up at tahoe this weekend. ski resorts are closed and earl travels not necessarily the best flooding risks continue for the bay as well. we have flood watches through sunday and those red areas are flood warnings on some of our smaller streams in the north bay and drainage is out of the santa cruz mountains. today's daytime highs in the 50's san jose will be at 60 degrees. looking ahead. temperatures will remain pretty steady on this warmer side of things. upper 50's to low 60's and a lot of this forecast, we will see a showers continuing this

snow continues across the sierra nevada. think there's a cold systems that have been rolling through over the past couple 3 weeks here and they'll continue to be that way through wednesday morning. winter storm warnings up across the western of the sierra nevada. maybe another one to 3 feet of snow between now and then above 2500 feet. that is a very low snow level. and then even upwards 10 inches of snow at 2000 feet. so extremely low snow and that will see the whole pattern begin to change. but if you're traveling up there the next couple of days, expect major delays and some whiteout conditions from time to time. not going to snow solid up there. that entire period. but you will see periods of some very heavy snow. you see what's going on in the atmosphere uses speckle clouds out there. we've seen that today. we have a nice sunshine and all of a sudden we see some of those showers begin to pick up and move through. and that's where we sit right now. and we're getting into another round of some heavier amounts of rainfall
