good news across the sierra.across the northern sierra yesterday and that had the road crews working steadily. they were definitely trying to work hard to make sure interstate 80 stayed in good shape over donner summit. some ski resorts reported more than a foot of snow since friday, then the snow actually turned to rain at the lower elevations and that was good news for the drivers that were headed to the resorts. >> we actually started putting our chains on our truck and we got told by one of the plow truck drivers oh hey, you don't have to chain up anymore. so we lucked out real big time. >> that does make it easier but check out these pictures. drivers going across sierra should have the dhains with them. we did just check, all drivers going across 50 to south lake lake tahoe will need to use chains in some areas unless they are using four wheel drive with snow tires. >>> ski resort operators and water officials are happy with any amount of snow and rain but we're still way behind the curve when it comes to w

that's the reason the central sierra, 20% of average, northern sierra 15%.ith the dry year last year. but a little different story thanks to all the rainfall for the bay area. the totals still close to 80% to over 100% of average, and the reservoirs have improved from last year, almost by 30% to 40 persh. a boost in the totals compared to last year. we had warmer storms come in. they haven't brought much in the way of snow and the pattern that is responsible for it is the same one that is locked in the midwest and the east coast of record breaking snow and cold temperatures. high pressure out west leading to the record warm temperatures which as things stand right now, could be the warmest winter on record for the bay area, from the north bay, kentfield, san francisco, and some of the records go back to 1875. you see the numbers there, through the end of february now, we're seeing the temperatures ranking number one for the warmest winter so far around the bay area concord, livermore, to the south bay, and east out to sacramento as another string here of tem

we thought we would break down the sierra snow pack numbers. most of the sierra around 20% of average when you take another closer look at this it's only .9 of an inch of water/snow equivalent. only 5% of average. we're now nearly as dry as march 1991 which is the old record. let's compare this snowfall. from the east coast back here to the west. milton massachusetts, 140 inches on the ground. again, remember that's just a city there right near boston. we'll take you to a ski resort and only 82 inches at alpine meadows. way up at 8,000 feet. so right now we have more snow 58 inches more in milton mass than our ski resorts up here across the sierra. as far as that rain outlook goes it's not great over the next couple of weeks. we likely could have rain by the 11th 12th and 15th. more on your forecast in about 15 minutes. >>> rain or shine you can download our free nbc bay area app to find out what you can expect in your specific neighborhood. also look at real-time doppler radar. >>> now to a follow up on the jahi mcmath case. the family announc
