the kappa sigma house broke out into flames around 3:15 this morning.t was a massive fire, about four alarms. and you can see firefighters still working very hard trying to make sure that they put the flames out. >> yeah, you can see some of the flames that are burning right behind that tree there as they douse it with water. it's a four-alarmer so this is a pretty big fire. it started around 3:15 this morning in the laundry room at the fraternity house. and as we understand, no injuries at all. apparently all the fraternity brothers were able to get out. but this is on south 11th street on fraternity row at san jose state. once again, kappa sig house, they continue to douse it. do we have matt bigler? >> yes. he is on scene from kcbs radio. what can you tell us about the fire, matt? >> reporter: well, it's a big fire. it's at least three alarms. they are talking about going to four. i'm looking at it right now. it's been burning for over an hour and flames are still shooting out of the roof at the two-story building. you probably have shots of it on te

we're talking kappa sigma house on 11th street. i'm joined by mary gutierrez from the san jose fire department to tell us the latest. are you there? >> yes. i'm here. >> thank you. what can you tell us? was it a pretty big blaze? >> yes. we have active fire going through the roof. the call at about 3:20 this morning for a fire at kappa sigma on 11th street. the crews arrived, they had heavy black smoke from the rear of the building. on the second floor they found a fire in the attic. they did an aggressive interior attack with other units. in about 45 minutes the building was declared unsafe. we did a vacate. and we went to a defensive attack which is putting our strains at 1,000 gallons a minute. >> did everyone get out safely, do you know? >> yes. all students had gotten out of the building by the time fire had gotten here. there was a search. we have one firefighter with burns to his hands transported to the hospital. >> so one injury. describe the structure. sometimes you see some of the older homes used for these frat houses a

huge towering flames coming from kappa sigma. the firefighters had to come out in the issue of water from above to make sure that no one was injured however one firefighter was burned when the hot water coming off of the flames kicked back to him. he had burns on his hands. he is at a hospital at this time. fortunately, no injuries to the 28 students. they heard smoke detectors and everyone came else. they said at first it seemed like it was smoldering, and they thought it was no big deal and according to the president of kappa sigma, within minutes the fire erupted. according to the fire department, they believe the fire started in a laundry room and erased through the walls eventually reaching the attic. right now they believe this is a total loss. >> are the street still closed? >> while the firefighters are here, they need room to work, many fraternity brothers are there in the middle of the roadway behind the crime scene tape to make sure that the firefighters have plenty of space. it looks like eleventh street is closed fro

the four-alarm fire burning at san jose state, this is the kappa sigma house on 11th street. apparently the fire broke out at 3:20 a.m. and it may have started in the laundry room. they don't know exactly what floor. the fire quickly spread to the attic. crews tried to go up there to fight the fire. but because of the intense heat, there was a threat this is roof might collapse so they backed down and now you can see them using the ladders and fire hoses instead of firefighters going up on top. one firefighter was taken to the hospital with minor burns to his hands. we know that it started out as a three-alarm fire, quickly spread to four alarms. it should be out in 10 or 15 minutes. there are no reports of injuries to any of the people in the house. school is out so apparently the students that were here are students that were here on summer break. and we'll continue to bring you the very latest. right now elizabeth wenger has traffic. >> thank you, anser. that's right. fire crews are still out this blocking several lanes around the intersection where the frat house is. let'

this is the kappa sigma fraternity near the san jose state university campus. and you can see that there are no longer these big orange flames shooting from the roof of the building. there are three area ladders pointing their water hoses directly onto the building. we saw a little bit of smoke a short time ago. let's show you what it looks like live right now from overhead in news chopper 2. there is a lot of damage to this building, but you can see the flames for the most part seem to have been put out, and at this point they're kind of shooting water on some of those hot spots and making sure nothing flares up again. now, there were 75 firefighters working this fire at one point. san jose fire department had to call for mutual aid from santa clarita because this -- santaclara, you can see from the pictures about an hour ago, at one point it was a four-alarm fire. there were no reports of injuries among any of the people living in the fraternity. there were about 28 fraternity brothers living inside this house when the fire started at 3:00. all of them got ou
