why half of the nasdaq emerges out of silicon valley.t is for those reasons, and those network effects are what makes silicon valley great. david: what about around the world, is china likely to pass silicon valley as a leader of technology? reid: i think it's one of the greatest concerns that silicon valley-knowledgeable people have , because china is amazing. it has huge amounts of tech talent. everyone's acting like an immigrant, you know, with hunger. large companies have this policy, 996-9:00 till 9:00 p.m. six days a week, you are discoverable at your desk. and that's kind of like you know you know tens of thousands of technical people in technology companies. and they are doing a lot of innovation. there is there's things that we learn from china. and so, i think that china is going to have one kind of very strong creation of the technological future. it is one of the reasons why in blitz scaling, we call it the land of great scaling. -- blitz scaling. i think silicon valley has some edges too, but i think it's very much of a game

silicon valley itself has overlapping network effects. it is a hub where a lot of english-speaking entrepreneurs from around the world come to start software businesses or key technology businesses. there is a hub of capital and knowledge and investing that goes into it. there is a hub of count, growing companies. i wrote this booklet, scaling, about how you build technology companies. there's network effects of learning, out of sharing of information, and that's part of the reason silicon valley, which has 3.5 million people tops, and why half of the nasdaq emerges out of silicon valley. it is for those kinds of reasons. and those network effects are what make silicon valley great. david: what about the rest of the world? is china likely to catch up and pass silicon valley as a leader in technology? reid: it is one of the greatest concerns that silicon valley knowledgeable people have because china is amazing. it has huge amounts of tech talent, everyone acting like an immigrant, you know, with hunger. large companies have this policy, 9

there has been silicon valley on both sides of this.nia is overwhelmingly democratic more so than in 2003 when schwarzenegger one. it has been -- but i think silicon valley now leans heavily democrat. that is where the silicon valley put their money when it comes to election time but there has been frustration with, during the pandemic especially, economic shutdowns, with the broader state of not only california part particularly -- but particularly urban california, the question of we are paying all of these taxes in where they going and there have been very vocal people on both sides, but particularly on the call side that helped this whole campaign gain momentum on this first place. caroline: masks being one of them. the irony is how much political influence do big technology money billionaires have over basically what is a democratic election? guest: it is interesting. silicon valley has always given money, sometimes very quietly, destroying leaning republicans. david packer, cofounder of hewlett-packard, was an important republican

the spin from silicon valley is that there on our side, when it comes to how we control our data, long privacy policies are very confusing. and if you make it long and spell it all the detail, then you're probably going to reduce the percent of people who read it. however, take a quick look at the design of the buttons and the pop ups that were made to click. and it's clear that the tech companies have the upper hand in the data battle. design is power and every single design decision makes a certain reality, more or less likely. and what tech companies and psychologists and other people have known for years. if the defaults are notoriously sticky, and so if you design the interface so that all the defaults are set to maximize exposure, then you're going to get a lot more data in the aggregate than you would if you set all the defaults to privacy protected because people don't go in and change them. so we tell we fundamentally changed the incentives. we're still going to see companies manipulating the design of these buttons and these technologies to ensure that you still keep disclosi

this is one of those classic silicon valley fears. what happens when one of the giants invades your turf. there is always this debate, does the focus company win or does the company that has the huge moat and sort of tentacles into every aspect of your life win? sometimes one wins or the other. but it is not always obvious. there are certainly many examples i think we could all think of where a company like alphabet or something enters a new product, everyone thinks it will kill the product of the smaller company. it doesn't work. amazon is so powerful because of prime, because of videos, because of shopping. there is potentially a lot of power. when you are talking about further entrenching itself in the home, also going against apple. i don't think a lot of people are that comfortable betting against amazon. emily: there is a question of how many of these new devices we need and want? would you buy a $1500 robot that follows you around the house? joe: probably not. i don't know, maybe. i have two young kids. of course, my house is m
