. ♪ far-xi-ga ♪ >>> time now for business, and for that let's bring in cnbc's silvia amaro who joins ondon. good morning, silvia. wall street today will have an eye out for the minutes from the federal reserve's january meeting. with that in mind, how's the market shaping up? >> good morning. well, at this stage futures suggest it will be a negative start on wall street today. and this is after we saw u.s. stocks ending tuesday's session also on a negative note. in particular the nasdaq ended tuesday's session down by almost 1%. as you mentioned, john, one of the big focuses today is on those minutes from the federal reserve as investors continue to try to peace together what will happen in terms of rate cuts from the fed this year. >> so the earnings season in full swing with wall administer offering one of the first looks at how americans shop during the all important holiday season. what have we learned so far? >> so when it comes to wal-mart results, we learn that shoppers turn to the big buck retailers throughout the year -- the holiday season. but there was more in those results

and for that let's bring in cnbc's silvia amaro who joins us live from london. , silvia. investors are looking aed to a busy day of economic data and retail earnings. what's the sense as to what's driving the market this morning? >> so on monday we saw the major indexes in the united states ending the session on a negative note. in fact, 8 out of 11 sectors posted negative performances on monday, but today the big focus is on economic data, in particular as we expect personal consumption expenditure price index figures. this is a metric that is closely followed by the federal reserve, and therefore investors will also be looking at it quite closely. but there's more. we're also going to get durable goods, housing and consumer confidence numbers today. and on top of that, the earnings season continues. we're going to hear from macy's and beyond as well. so plenty in the equity market, john. >> wall street blue chip index is getting a shakeup. tell us about it. >> we are indeed seeing a bit of a shakeup when it comes to the dow this week. so the latest change is th

. >>> time now for business, and for that let's bring in cnbc's silvia amaro who joins us live from londonstock futures town this morning as investors are looking ahead to a key inflation data due later this week. what should we expect today? >> so at this stage as you pointed there futures do suggest it'll be a negative start to the trading session on wall street, and that's after we saw a mixed picture really on uttuesday. we had the russell 2k posting its first four day winning streak. at the same time, though, the dow saw back-to-back losses. now, when it comes to today's trading session, one of the data points investors will be looking at is a wholesale inventories data, but of course the big economic point, though, we're all expecting is due on thursday when we get the personal consumption expenditure. now, this is important because it's highly closely followed metric by the federal reserve. so the markets all of us will be looking at this figure to understand what the fed might do next when it comes to potential rate cuts. >> the earning season in full swing with top retailers posti

time now for business, and for that let's bring in cnbc's silvia amaro who joins us live from london.a. wall street's worries over rate cuts persistent while they also keep an eye on nvidia stock rise after yesterday's close. huge numbers there. what should we expect for today's open? >> so expectations point to a positive start for the trading session on wall street today, john. this is after nvidia shares rose as much as 9% in after hours trade. the company reported on wednesday, and just to give you an idea their total revenue rose 265% from a year ago. so some remarkable figures from invid you. we also heard from the federal reserve, their latest minutes suggest policy centers are taking a cautious approach when it comes to the prospect of cutting rates. and in terms of what's in focus today, well, the earnings season continue. we're going to hear from a handful of companies including moderna. and on the data front we're going to get weekly jobless claims and existing home sales figures. so let's see what will be these numbers and how the markets will interpret them. >> so japanes

. >> let's get back out to munich where silvia amaro is standing by. , stellar coverage from you over the weekend. you have talked to the german defense minister. he is pretty hawkish. he said 2% is not the target. we may have to go higher. >> reporter: exactly. just to put it in context, germany is expected to spend about 72 billion euro in defense this year alone. that is really a record for this country which is a country for many years struggled with the idea of investing more on defense. that's changed. when i spoke to the minister of defense from germany, mr. pistorius, he did say 2% might not be enough given all of the security threats they are facing and in the medium-to-long term, they may have to spend more with defense. the key question here and given that we are financial news journalists is where is the money coming from here? when i posed that question to minister pistorius, he told me he didn't know yet. >> we have to discuss it in the months to come before the budget in 2025. particularly for the budgets from 2028 on. the special fund wi

silvia amaro is joining us with more. >> that is right.fter almost two years waiting to become members. defense alliance, they cleared the final hurdle by getting approval from the hungarian parliament. this is what we are looking at here. this is the next formation of the defense alliance with sweden expected to become a full member in the coming days. one nato official suggested we could see that official moment taking place as early as friday. now it is worth remembering that sweden applied at the same time as finland back in may for nato. this was after the russian invasion had started in ukraine. finland became a member of nato last year in april, but sweden had to wait until now, basically, to get the final approval from all nato member states. we had to holdout with hungary and turkey. from the turkish per spespectiv they had to wait for concrete activity in stockholm because there was a concern of terrorism and turkey wanted approval of sales of f-16s from the united states. when it comes to hungary, the reasons behind the delay ar
