john simmons and it's time to pull out those handkerchiefs cause we have reached our last dimension, dare i say it, the social dimension. but, we still got plenty more to do here, and some very interesting classes for you. with the social dimension, we want to look at how religion works, and the reason for that is we, as we've done the whole semester, is to appreciate religious diversity. and we want to focus on the united states and look at some of the reason why we are so religiously diverse, and the reason for that is because we are going to be - continue to be become increasingly diverse, and we need to know how to appreciate other believers' beliefs and well do what we've been doing the whole semester. so by saying 'how it works' we want to see why we're diverse, why some religious organizations are successful, and why some don't make it. later we want - going to be wanting to look at what a cult is, what a sect is, so we can develop neutral ways of thinking about them, and overall hopefully in this segment we'll see that indeed we are religiously diverse, and a well educated pe

john simmons, and as happens, we are moving into another dimension, the ethical dimension. and in many ways, when we speak of ethics, it cuts to the core of this course, as you probably know by now, because we're talking about behavior. what people believe- well, we've seen many, many different examples of it. but how they behave- proper patterns of action- that's what we want to look at as we move through this very, very important dimension, because you know, believing, i mean, it's an important part of identity and relationship. but how one behaves affects us all, and we've been linking the doctrinal and the ethical and the social dimension together as we've been moving through this, and we're going to do some more formal notes on the ethical dimension. but how people behave certainly does affect us all. and you know, we're supposed to not date the teleclass, but i don't know, when really tragic events occur, i don't think it necessarily dates them to bring it up. and of course, as we are involved in this class, you know, we've just had a hugely tragic worldwide event in

john simmons and we are moving on through the semester here, thoroughly ensconced in the doctrinal dimension. but since doctrine sometimes can be a tough road to hoe, why don't we start out with something fun here- a joke. anybody have a joke? a joke? yeah, go ahead. >> it's a george carlin- the comedian- it's his joke. someone in the audience asked him did he believe in the ten commandments. he said, 'yes, i do believe in the commandments- six commandments and four suggestions." >> that's a good one with doctrine, because when we're talking about doctrine, as you know, and ethics, we're at the very heart of the course, which is belief and behavior. and we've mentioned several functions of doctrine, and today i want to take another spin on that and look at the tension in the doctrinal dimension between the sacred and the secular. so often the deeply religious have a problem with the secular world, and for others, like us, it's difficult to see where that demarcation is, that line between what is the mundane, what's the ordinary, and what is special and what is sacred. and we've talked about
