nbc's keir simmons has more for us tonight from eastern ukraine. keir, good evening. >> reporter: hey, brian. good evening. another military helicopter was shot down over the eastern ukrainian city of slavyansk today. these pictures unverified by nbc news appear to show it being targeted. it is the third such attack in just a week. while four ukrainian soldiers were killed as the government here tries to wrestle control back from pro-russian militia. meanwhile, a mob of 2,000 stormed a military prosecutor's office smashing doors and throwing files on the floor as divisions deepen and spread. funerals have been held south of here in odessa where 40 people were killed in that union fire -- that union building fire before the weekend. while here in donetsk down the street at the city hall, it is barricaded. there are men in military uniforms carrying weapons vowing to fight if the ukrainian military come here as ukraine tears itself to pieces. brian? >> keir simmons reporting live for us tonight from donetsk, ukraine. keir, thanks. >>> back in this co

we are joined by keir simmons who is reporting more violence there today as well. >> yes, that is right. heavy gunfire in the nearby town where we are hearing confirmed by the ukrainian defense ministry that another ukrainian held ko helicopter has been shot down we assume by the pro russian militia, and shot down over slov yansk, and at least part of it has landed on water and part of them have survive and no one has been killed, but it comes after two of the helicopters have been shot down in an area half a mile from here over the weekend and the escalating violence in odessa which is much, much south of here where we saw a large mob descend on the police station, and break down the door and pull 60 comrades if you'd like from the police station, and seeing them freed. we also saw despite prime minister here saying that that the police bore some of the responsibility with what is going on in odes sashgs asodess police officers throw down the rye yat shields and walk away. and the ukrainian government says they have control in parts, but in watching, this is difficult to believe. in ea

andrew simmons, thank you. our correspondent is in istanbul. andrew is talking about the anger sweeping through the country not being placated by this picture that has gone viral purportedly of an advisor to the prime minister actually attacking one of those protestors. >> yes, a protestor being held down by a couple of turkish special forces and this advisor to the president photographed earlier in the day walking closely behind the prime minister as he visited the area taking advantage of this manned helplessness to get his point across. the governor can't be approving of what he did, creating an outrage on social media in turkey. the problem that the government has is far greater than what people might assume from actions of people in the prime ministers team. it is that this incident in the mine hasn't come out of the blue. this is not the first mining accident in turkey. in fact, quite the opposite. turkey has an appalling record not only on mine safety, but on workplace accidents as a whole, the highest in europe for workplaces in general

kier simmons joins me now on the line from donetsk. some of the people detained have been freed.t can you tell us? >> reporter: that's right. whatever world leaders attempt to do the reality on the ground in ukraine is it's a downward spiral into retribution p continues. tonight we are hearing there are pro government protesters on the streets. what happened earlier as lawlessness breaks down here was a group of pro russians opposed to the pro government protesters that stormed the police station, broke in the door and opened the door to 30 people who were being held there. they have been held there since friday when, as you say, more than 40 of the other protesters died in a blaze in a union build buildi building. appalling scene there is. people on the street were said to be taunting those inside even as they were dying in the blaze. that's southern ukraine. this is eastern ukraine. there are parts under the control of militia. there is a nearby town the surrounded by ukrainian military. inside we have seen pictures of the militia driving through the streets in tanks. remember,

according to wayne simmons, any possibly agreement between the two countries would threaten the region. how much traction is there to this story that the two have a secret deal today? >> i think there's a great deal of traction. if in fact all of the intel proves to be true, i would without a doubt assure you that this is one of the worst possible scenarios that could have taken place that is the proverbial enemy of my enemy is my friend. in this case, we are supplying as all of us are aware, we're supplying iraq to fight various enemies of the united states and iraq. we're supplying them with $15 billion worth of military hardware including missiles, tank ammo, vehicles, m4s, m 16s and we have sacrificed so much treasure and the blood to help win them certain amount of freedom, only to find out of course that iran has the same enemy now that iraq does and oh, by the way, that enemy also is fighting against assad, so herb essentially, we need karl rove's greece board to keep track of this. we have iran and iraq supporting assad because they're all fighting the same enemy. >> they've al

keir simmons is live in donetsk. putin saying he doesn't want the referendum publicly but private live he does but wants distance here? what's going on here? >> reporter: that's what everyone is asking themselves and inevitably with president putin, every time he makes a move, everyone gets subjected into the analysis and trying to figure out exactly what he is up to. as you mentioned, what's really perplexing is for him to announce that the military are pulling back from the border and then for that to be visibly clear according to the west anyway, that russia isn't doing that. and at the same time to make this announcement he wants these separatists here to delay the referendum and for them to then say, well, we don't want to do that, when they are pro-russian, when we always considered them to be very close to russia. we've seen the ballot papers, chuck, and they very clearly say that this is a republic, eastern ukraine, and it should be independent. it's very clear what they are asking for in this vote on sunday.

we can hear now from andrew simmons who joins us live from there. andrew, the prime minister, then, is meeting a lot of people who are both anxious and angry >> reporter: most certainly. you join me on a wind-swept, dusty and now rain-sodden staging post really overlooking the mine shaft. the prime minister has moved from here now into the town, itself, to meet bereaved people to console people, to try and assess the situation. but the site you see over here, only a four or five-minute walk away is appalling. it's a lot of people waiting forlornly to see loved ones. all they are seeing is bodies being recovered most of the time. we have spoken to rescue workers who say it's grim now. it's more than 24 hours since this fire broke out followed by an explosion and all of the poisonous gas and people are saying the rescue workers in particular are saying that it's a hopeless task. they are also revealing they can't get into all of the areas two kill meters below the surface of the earth and four kilometers into the hillside. they can't get into all of t
