joining me now from berlin is simon shuster.the story for this week's edition focusing on vladimir putin's popularity and aspirations in ukraine. simon, let's talk about why these people want independence. what's really driving this vote? >> initially, i think it was driven to a large extent by frustration when the new government came to power in february in ukraine. via a revolution. it was driven to a great extent by russian propaganda that portrayed the new government as fascist. that rallied quite a bit of separatism in ukraine. from russia to help fight the separatist cause. it just turned into a cycle of anger, violence, and animosity between the people of east ukraine and the central government. >> so if eastern ukraine votes, what may happen next? >> i don't think this vote could create anything like a new entity on the map of the world. it would give the separatist leaders some cause, some air of legitimacy as they try to pursue further political and military goals. right now, their only mandate at legitimacy has come f

simon hobbs will wrap up the market day. simon? >> yeah, red around europe.sion after wall street opened in negative territory. here, we're okay before that in europe. it was relatively flat. the u.k., of course, coming back to trade after yesterday's public holiday in britain. we are at the height of earnings season in europe. far too many of the companies for me to run you through in this short period of time. but reuters star mine is suggesting 45% of the stock has missed estimates and forecast within the last 30 days come down for the next year by 0.9%. certainly barclays is in negative territory today. the investment bank clearly an issue, currencies, fixed income, commodities, earnings down 28%. the stock down now 5% on that major u.k. bank. of course, the new ceo will outline how he's going to reinvigorate the investment bank, or strip it, depending on your view. and ubs in zurich, the stock doing really well. they'll pay a special dividend as they reorganize themselves into a holding company so that next time if one bit of the bank gets in trouble, it

this family friend, simon astaire, told me that as elliott rodger was carrying out his deadly rampage, his parents were frantically trying to get to santa barbara, trying to find him, because they had just received that chilling manifesto from their 22-year-old son. we learned that rodger had sent this manifesto, 140 pages, to a couple of dozen people, including his family members, including his therapist, and others. and he had sent it right before he went on the shooting rampage, where he killed six people. and we learned that his mother discovered it at around 9:17, pacific time. she then went to his youtube page, where he was known to post videos and that's where she discovered the retribution video, where he talked about wanting to go to a sorority house and slaughter as many women as he could. the mother, according to astaire, then called the father, peter rodger, who hadn't seen the manifesto, apparently, and said -- told him what was going on. the mother called 911, alerted mr.s i to the situation and then we're told by astaire that as they were on their way to santa barbara,
