steve moore, "wall street journal", brian wesbury from first trust advisors and simon rosenberg from e new democratic network. simon, i will start with you. we went to you las vegas time. it is only fair. do you have a $100 trillion bill? are you ready for this to happen in the u.s.? >> i'm not sure i have a $100 bill. melissa, there is lot of work to be done to get our budget in better shape. we don't have to do everything in one year. there is sort of expectation there will be a grand bargain. all of our problems will be solved. i don't think that is going to happen. we could see this getting resolved over the next three or four years. pieces of it getting done. remember, we actually, when bill clinton left office in 2001 we were headed towards eliminating the deficit all together. future congress unraveled that, right? melissa: also because, and you know well, because the economy was growing so well. >> right. melissa: that was really the nesis of this segment, the economy, no matter how you slice it is not growing so well. steve moore, how do we get the economy back on track? >> t

simon rosenberg, heads up the new democratic network. on the state level, the new york governor, his popularity may be going down as he publics for more gun control. maybe that is a sign some of the senators may not want to rush through the gun legislation? >> i don't think they are going to rush through it. this will be a deliberate process and hopefully we'll have a common sense bipartisan package by the summer. that is what people hope. remember, there are two polls showing broad support for elements of what is being discussed in places like kentucky and texas. there is a middle ground that can be forged here in the next six months. >> eric: it seems to me the senate and president obama has given the mandate. go forward with this. senate, i'm waiting to see a vote. i have a haunch the 12 senators that rated a b plus by the nra that may have been elected because of their stance on guns. i'm not so sure they are in a hurry to say aye or nay on a vote. >> you have heard express about concern over the assault weapons ban and greater inter

let's talk about it with matt schlapp, white house political director under president bush, simon rosenbergder of left-leaning political action think tank ndn. matt, to you first. the idea of divide and destroy the gop, what do you think? >> yeah, jon, i actually agree with that. usually when presidents get e reelected, they have this approach in the beginning of the second term that starts with their inaugust lal that they're really going to be the president of all the people, and they're a little defensive. they really want to be the president of every american. instead this seemed much more political, much more aimed at his progressive base. if president obama was a major league pitcher, he just threw a fastball right at the heads of republicans, and this is just the first speech. we've got more speeches to come. my side better get unified fast and figure out what's going on. jon: simon, something tells me you see this a little differently. i am simon rosenberg and the new policy institute and we are here today as part of our 21st century border project, which is now close to 2.5 years old. we have a wonderful panel today. i don't know the exact numbers, but this is probably unfair to prevent the we have done, bringing voices from the border region and we have had probably a total of 60 to 70 mayors and sheriffs and other local officials who have been here in washington helping to share their perspective about the unique challenges and opportunities in the border region, and this is a particularly esteemed panel that we have today. i would like to thank you all for coming. part of the premise of this project and we began a few years ago was really just an acknowledgment and recognition of how much america was changing in mexico was changing. we are going to be hearing from the former ambassador here in a minute. the most important bilateral relationship in the past is what mexico. i am a raging representative of the court order. but i think that this idea that america is going through demographic changes, to the ways that imm
