hong kong is expected to follow singapore to pull out of a recession.ong do you see this recovery here in asia? >> i think it's quite a decent economic recovery. i think q1 will mark the low points in the cycle. i think what's been happening in recent months is that we've seen an impressive rebound in ex ports. the world trade shop that really hurt asian growth last year is dissipating. certainly, you know, those economies that are very cyclical in nature and that react quickly to any turn around in ex ports, particularly the strong growth in incident tra asian ex ports that we've seen is all going to be good news. i'm expecting a decent number. we're seeing it elsewhere in asia. chinese growth is holding up really well. but i think domestic demand is strong enough to ensure and underpin that we get further growth going into 2010. >> and neal, we are getting those numbers as we speak. hong kong gdp is down 3.8% versus a forecast of 5.5% and that's better than the 7.8% decline year on year. so it looks like perhaps year on year, things are looking better

now over to singapore for a wrap on the asian market. >> hi, stephane. really on the back of better than expected economic data, the u.s. jobs report. over in japan, the machinery orders. that was up for the first time in four months. better than expected, even though the forecast remains fairly weak, we did see a rally on the machinery stocks. taking a look at the exports, pretty strong gains today and holding very resilient. we saw the dollar-yen raise on friday. falling back a little today. didn't have too much impact on the exporter stocks. mitsubishi chemical reports it may buy mitsubishi rayon. we saw reports up 20% on that. the kospi was pretty much flat today. the foreign adventure binvestoro this for 19 consecutive quarters. a 3% fall. now over to bertha in the u.s. >> this week investors are basically going to focus on the consumer and the fed. we're going to get retail sales data later in the week and hear from macy's and walmart and other retail giants and the fed two-dave policy meeting which starts tomorrow, wrapping up wednesday afternoon.

now let's go over to saijal in singapore. >> thanks, carolin.t was nice to see some green back on the boards here. nice rally for the asian markets. really out to the shanghai markets which surged up 4.5% from two-month lows. volumes are still fairly low and a lot of those gains are due to the resource related stocks like petrochina and sinopec, but still, pretty good gains there. you saw that spillover effect in hong kong. the hang seng index up 1.9%. h shares up 3.5%. i want to talk about icbc, reporting results and beating on q2 net as well as if first half net. the first half net up 279%. 66 billion yuan is where they came in at. of course, benefiting from new loans. we saw new loans up for the first half about 19%. we did see the net interest income drop a bit. icbc saying they are seeing signs of stabilization and they expect a recovery in that interest margin for the second half of the year. as for japan goes, nikkei closing up 1.8% higher. we saw a good rally in a lot of the oil stocks as well as the resource related trading firms there.
