i began with a question on the front page of the sioux city journal that day. is the recession over? >> i think a lot of people in the private sector might have got their hours cut, things like that. but your public sector jobs, they seem to be all right. >> i felt the recession is slowing. >> what is washington's job to help? is it to stay out of the way and let the market run its course? or is it to try to pump the economy with money or tax breaks? >> i'm not in agreement with the -- with this total stimulus plan. as many economists have said, general outlook seems to be improving with only 10% of the money spent. so leave it alone it will fix itself. >> i think big business should make it a take it or fail relationship if this business fails? are they going to bail us out? i don't think so. >> another issue with tough choices is the health care debate. your senator, grassley, is trying to negotiate some sort of bipartisan agreement that he hopes can bring some conservatives and republicans on board. do you want him in those negotiations? >> i think negotiati

those counties stretch from sioux city. the state has been hit by three different hail storms this summer. jeff toured some of the fields during the crop tour. >> and here is another thing that not happens in a hail storm. you get this bruising. that's how severe this hail storm was. that's where hail stones hit on this ear. just pounded it. just pounded it. and that's -- that's severe bruising. this is -- this was -- it was a nice corn crop up here. it wasn't a great corn crop because we were getting a little dry, but doggone, now they're just trying to get what they can. >> despite the hail damage, the scouts say iowa will still have a big corn crop, assuming they have a normal finish to the season. >>> for wheat growers, the story is different. harvest season for the winter wheat crop is virtually complete. as of last weekend, the ago department reported that 89% of the crop had been harvested. some fields in idaho, washington, oregon and montana still need to be harvested. >>> now we would like to take a moment to invit

a couple of storms popping up in the corn belt, sioux city, you see a lot of reds and greens pop up on radar. what that means, we've got intense storms out there. that's where it's most dense in the atmosphere. you'll also notice a couple of shapes popping up. severe thunderstorm watch boxes in effect until 2:00 local time. a lot of action here, but in a few areas, namely over towards fort dodge, ames, and des moines, you don't have much. you're going to see a lot of dark clouds, those thick skies are going to be moving right in your direction as they do so, that's going to bring the heavy rainfall first, preceded by strong winds and later into the afternoon, more of that action spread into parts of chicago, michigan, could be dealing with severe thunderstorms, maybe large hail developing and the isolated tornadoes will be in the picture. also as you get back towards the finger lakes of new york and new york city, could deal with thunder boomers. nothing in the southeast, but hot and humid's going to be the name of the game from louisiana back in alabama, even into texas where highs ar
