siraj hasmi and julian zeleny. is the author after new book "fault lines, the history of the united states since 1974." siraj, is this kind of trash talk you'd expect from donald trump a year out from his general election, from the re-election campaign? or is this an indication that this is someone he is concerned about? >> well, the thing is that joe biden is leading in the democratic field at the moment. of course, we are more than a year out from the 2020 presidential election. and what is interesting here is that donald trump, with respect to this government shutdown, if he does not cave -- i should say if he does not declare a national emergency and he caves on state funding for the border wall, then he has to start worrying about a 2020 presidential election in terms of which democrat he faces because any of them could probably defeat him because his base would be fractured at that point. biden of the democratic candidates who are, you know, flirting with running or announced they are running, he is the most

. >> let's discuss that further with siraj hasmi and julian zeleny. gentlemen, welcome back.ulian, let me start with this fascinating piece on cnn.com that explores that wasted month that sarah westwood was just talking about and you remember at the start, early on in the shutdown, there was this retreat, mick mulvaney took senior white aides to camp david to talk about legislative goals for 2019. how has this shut down, this month and maybe the mexicnext f as they try to get to a border deal impact how the white house will be able to do this year? >> nothing more valuable in politics on time and he gave away a lot of time on a cause that did not come together' it's going to be very hard for him to move to some big initiative. at the same time, there was a big political cost how the shutdown unfolded. his popularity fell even further. you saw a lot of concern and upset within the republican caucus on capitol hill which, thus far, has stood by the president pretty solidly. he comes out much weaker and in a weak position with much less to move forward on any grand initiative. >

>> joining us now to talk cnn political analyst julian zeleny, and siraj hasmi.tlemen, welcome back. julian, let me start with you. this is being reported framed as the two sides are coming closer together but let's challenge that because the president's proposal has every dollar he wants for the wall. democrats say that is a nonstarter. the billion plus dollars democrats are putting forward and voting on next week doesn't have a single dollar for the wall and the president says he needs that. are they any closer as weekend of speeches and legislation? oo >> the only way they are closer is there might be negotiations or discussions in congress. i think the actual proposal doesn't get anyone anywhere. the house republicans have made clear they are not in favor of the immigration measures that the president has proposed. and for democrats he is still shutting down the government and demanding that these concessions be made and that is the nonstarter. it's the process as much as the wall. and so the president didn't outline anything that is going to lead to grand ba
