[laughter] damian: what you see yesterday is a pretty big spike. i think that is spilling over into credit markets. we have seen spreads widening and not coming back. i think that is something you have to keep a watch on in that environment when there might be payment pressure in dollar funding availability pressure. what you're looking at here is cross currency basis. this is offshore demand from offshore banks and central banks, etc. when the u.s. cut rates, you should have seen the cross currency basis explode to the upside, but reversed overnight. why? because there is still relentless demand for dollars from offshore. that is what the basis is back down. but i was basically going to say is that that means there's demand for dollars, and that is buil

on sirius xm channel 119. and on the bloomberg business app. time for technically speaking where we set you up with trades of the day. walk me through what you are looking at today. >> let's start with the s&p 500. this chart shows you the s&p 500 relative to the 52-week average. irrational exuberance a month ago. we need to look forward to see if this market is going through a mild correction or real recession. mean12% from the 52-week really means nothing. if you look at previous recessions in 2008 and 2000, you get way below that. i think we get about spread that will be good for long-term investing. alix: fair enough. because you cover commodities, especially gold, show me what you are looking at with gold volatility. if you have to sell anything to go to cash, gold is on your list. >> the white line is the 100-week average of the vix. is thisproblem i have is a mean-reverting event. in 2008, that was the lowest level ever. 2007, we have precedent. volatility goes up. gold should continue to go up. if we do it volatility should do, gold sho

on sirius xm channel 119 and on the bloomberg business at.erg. ♪ alix: time for trader's take. joining me as damian sassower were of bloomberg intelligence, taking a look at some credit spreads. damian: we were talking about this yesterday, looking at the market value of negative yielding debt in the bloomberg i graded index -- bloomberg aggregate index. you are actually seeing the market value decline simply because of the relentless move in investment grade credit spreads globally. again, nothing short of spectacular. what you are looking at here is the bloomberg barclays ig index on that having blown out to 242 basis points. let's be clear, that was below 100 basis points back in january, and that is up 19 out of the last 20 days. you have seen spreads widening in ig corporates. persistent, relentless, all of the above. -- doesis is provided this provide any dislocation? damian: this is becoming a balance sheet story for banks who don't want to intermediate in markets. while you get a bit of primary connectivity yesterday, if you just look

on sirius xm channel 119 and on the bloomberg business app.loomberg. ♪ alix: time for trader's take. cleaning me as damian sassower of bloomberg intelligence. i have a money market mania chart. you brought it up earlier. walk me through why this is so important and what you're looking at. damian: prime money market funds are able to invest in a whole range of short-term instruments. bankers acceptance, commercial papers, cetera money market funds are not. they are only able to invest in t-bills, etc.. like we quality move are now experiencing, you would expect to see short investors move into government money market fund, and that's exactly what you see. the chart is simply the ratio between the two. what this highlights for me is the lehman blow. it was the reserve prime fund that broke the buck. it went to 96 cents. this is a $63 billion short-term investment vehicle that went wheels up. obviously there is a reason for that. -- i am not at all protecting we will see another lehman-type blowup, but this is exactly what is driving the move in
