nbc's ian cull joins us live from sjc where one of the direct flights from maui i believe is scheduled to land where you are in about an hour? >> reporter: yeah, raj, there are a few flights coming directly from maui very soon tonight. we hope to hear from those passengers about what they've experienced, what they've seen. we talked with passengers who are planning to fly on the to maui today. they were disappointed that their trips were canceled, but they say they're more worried and heartbroken for the people in maui. overnight video began flowing in. a hellscape in paradise as multiple wildfires sweep across maui, especially in the famed lahaina area that thrives on tourism. today much of it reduced to ash. this picture from the town reads "pray for maui" showing what it looked like before, compared to today. cliff hansen cliffs on the island and spoke with msnbc after sharing drone video he shot following his escape from lahaina. >> with these winds, it whipped up real fast. people didn't have time. we don't have the numbers, but i think complete families are gone now. people are r

that would include 911 fire dispatchers, sjc supervisors, librarians, even vet technicians at the zoo. representatives were collecting votes over the possible three-day strike. they say the city's new contract isn't fair and they need more money and better benefits to be competitive with other local cities. i spoke with a 911 dispatcher for the fire department. she said the city can't recruit enough employees or keep the ones they have. >> it's like san jose is a training ground for people to come and get experience and get some knowledge about the job and they take jobs at other cities that pay more and have less work for them to do. >> ian, i'm wondering what exactly is the offer on the table right now? is the mayor saying anything about this? >> the mayor says it's a fair offer. he's willing to go back to the mediators. the city put this three-year contract on the table which raises 5% for the first year, then 4%, then 3%. he said that's the deal they settled on with four other bargaining units this year. mahan said if they offered more, the city council would have to cut other pro

>> reporter: we know at sjc, two flights this afternoon did depart to maui. but many other flights along the west coast we're seeing now checking the maui airport's website, they have been canceled. there are flights coming in because they need airlines to come in and help take passengers out. but american airlines, for example, today announced that it would be canceling all flights to that island. it comes after nearly 2,000 people had to shelter at the maui airport overnight. hawaii officials say the airlines are sending additional support to help people get off the island. clint hansen lives in maui and spoke with msnbc earlier today about what he's seen there. >> with these winds, it whipped up real fast. people didn't have time. we don't have the numbers, but i think complete families are gone now. people are running to the ocean to escape, jumping into it, getting rescued by the coast guard. >> reporter: back here in the bay, we do know there is a flight coming in from maui by way of honolulu. it arrives here in about 15 minutes. we spoke to speak with

again, coming up at 5:30, ian cull is live from sjc. families there canceling their vacations to hawaii because of these fires. >>> other local news, four men involved in a deadly gunfight at a peninsula park are now facing several charges. that shooting happened back in may of 2022 at jack ferrell park in east palo alto. police say an argument over money turned into a gunfight and over 30 shots were fired as kids were playing in the park. one man was killed. four others not involved in the fight were hurt. three of the four men charged today were actually already in jail on separate charges. >>> the search for a saratoga teen missing over a month is focused on the santa cruz mountains. 17-year-old katherine schneider was last seen driving her car on july 5th. the car has been found but katherine has not be. marianne favro is along highway 35 with the latest developments. >> reporter: this is near where katie's car was found on monday. you can see that one lane of highway 35 is closed while search and rescue team members comb this area.

sjc 50s on the temps low 50s santa rosa to 52. palo alto. some fog on the coast. not a lot, but there's enough there to keep them in the 60s. but inland temps are bumping up and when there's no fog over the oakland alameda estuary, that means bayside will be warmer as well. the coast though deal some fog not widespread but there are some there so 70 to 80 and 90s on those temps sal is here now. we were looking at the san mateo bridge. are we going to take a look at that again or somewhere else? we're going to look at that in just a bit as a matter of fact, i'm going to include that in my report, steve, because we had some earlier issues. i'm going to start east, though, and move my way to the west and south. highway four is slow, as we promised viewers to take a look at that. but it's typical, a little slowing on to 42 because of an earlier issue. not a lot on 80, a 26 minute drive to the maze from the carquinez bridge and then when you get to the bay bridge toll plaza, there is a backup. no problems here on interstate 880 as you drive to and from hayward into oak
