again slidell, new orleans, you can see these starting to slide in. these are not peak.hese are just where they are at now as the storm is approaching. you have several numbers here in the two to three feet range. however, those numbers are going to keep going up. these are the peak numbers of where we expect them to be throughout the morning and early afternoon. the pink area here including grand isle 12 to 16 feet. if you went to bed last night, these numbers have changed as you are waking up. most of these numbers have gone up one, maybe two feet from where they were yesterday evening. not dramatic changes, but not in the direction we were hoping they would go. eight to 12 feet for the purple areas here and four to seven for biloxi. winds will be a big factor with this. that's why we talk about power outages. in fact, we got word that the national weather service in new orleans may have taken a power hit and are using generators as backup. again these are the things that are expected to happen. more and more people are going to experience power outages as we go throug

joining us now slidell, louisiana mayor greg comber. good to have you on.rews, they've been doing some rescues. tell us what they've seen? >> good morning, jim. we have -- it was a long night last night and i finally got off the streets about 12:30. everything looked fairly decent. some trees and some power lines down. and i went to sleep, i guess on the the couch about 2:00 and 4:00 my police chief came in and turned the light on and said you need to get up. we have water in every neighborhood in town. in about a three hour period, we had probably five to six foot rise in the bayou and the lake estuary system that pushed water into a number of people's homes on the south side of our community. and we had to deploy boats at 4:00 this morning and do water rescues. we took about 15 people off their roofs of their homes. within three to four hours the water was starting to recede and we had to pull the boats out because we would have been stranded and now we're in with high water vehicles an taking people out of the neighborhood on the lower side of town. >> t

that's going to begin shortly in baton rouge and for our folks in slidell. the extreme wind warning is issued when the center of the storm comes onshore. if you get winds above 115 miles per hour. they extended this and issued it closer to new orleans. it butts right up against the western portion of the city. and that extreme wind warning will go throughout the next couple hours as the eye heads northwards. we were thinking earlier today new orleans would be just outside of the eyewall. it wouldn't go through the heart of the storm, but because of this turn towards the north, it's going to bring this western eyewall very close to the city limits as we go throughout the next three hours. we easily could get the western portion of the city, 100-mile-per-hour gusts, 110-mile-per-hour gusts. you can see, this black line is the forecast path. it was going on a pretty much northwest track. looked like it was going right for houma. then it slowed down and stalled. and then look at that, due north, and the eye, it has to reposition this at the top of the next hour.
