michael smerconish and he's with me now. it's like holy diversity, batman, look at what's happening now finally. >> it's such a contrast to 2016 as that picture evidences and i think, brooke, hillary clinton in 2016 cleared that field. nobody at the outset thought that bernie sanders would be able to hang in with her as late and as long as he did, but in contrast now as we approach 2020, all the democratic stars are coming out to play and joe biden, perhaps, the biggest star of all is not even in yet. so it's really a remarkable field and what's very difficult is to try and determine how many different lanes are there on the democratic side of the aisle and who will really be competing with whom and that's very difficult to predict at this stage. >> we caught up with joe biden earlier in the week and was asked if he's going to jump in and even he said it's still too early. so tbd on the former vice president. let's go back to cory booker here because he was asked in newark, he was asked today if he would do away with private

i want to bring in michael smerconish.e host of smerconish, michael, how extraordinary is this and the idea that if and normally under normal circumstances you might have the resignation of these three democrats. how extraordinary would it be that the republican speaker might take over? >> who is to say that this is contained to the state of virginia? i know that virginia was the capital of the confederacy, but my hunch is that now across the country there are other elected officials who are saying to themselves, uh-oh, what do i have in my background? do i have some ridiculous, maybe racist halloween photograph from the 1980s or 1970s? who knows? a second reaction that i have is at first blush you might think that governor northam is saying to myself, at least now i have company and i'm not the eye of the storm. i'm not the focal point. i would disagree with that logic because i think that every day the governor stays in office given the news cycles that we have and how very quickly we move on to another subject he feels
