now, my great fortune was having the smithsonian as an extension of my classrooms. the natural world and to science. its art and cultural resources allowed me to understand other eras, other places, other lives. it developed my empathy, imagination, and sophistication. it took a young girl not from a wealthy background, from a segregated environment and enriched and ennobled her life immeasurably. today we arrive at another great moment of confluence when the smithsonian institution launches a museum where the history, culture, and the heroism of african-americans like my father, like congressman john lewis, like our president barack obama and others are recognized fully, constituted a great tributary, feeding the larger stream of our national story. now, this is so meaningful for me and for millions like me to see the full story of the people who came here enslaved yet lifted so many others up and ultimately themselves. we do a very great thing today for the millions of children from all over the nation and from around the globe who will come to the national museum

having worked with the smithsonian for more than 25 years on some of their more institutional buildings, i've been in a position to work with most all the agencies during that period of time. so in that review process, it is made clear that the footprint of having 60% of the building above ground was too much for the washington monument grounds and they asked us to reverse that, which we redesigned and came up with the final design, of course, that we see here today that has only 40% above ground and 60% below ground so then in that competition we had as part of the inspiration of the design the idea of a corona or crown. and that comes from a cariated column that was developed in the west african place which was the artistic west african community. there was actually on this floor a column which is the column that was the inspiration for this and if you were to look at it, you would see a three-tiered crown. that was the inspiration for this particular corona of the building. as we put 60% abobelow corona, which i think was good. the other portion of this which was inspirational in ter
