what are we dealing with, how many people and, again, fantastic work with the smithsonian who more or less did this for free and with that i will move on to what we have learned about these burials. first of all, we have two nearly complete soldiers. one of them was missing his entire skull and, initially, we were thinking it could be battle related injury, but it became clear that that skull had been carried away by a plow at some points because some of his teeth were found and the skull was gone. we had two nearly complete sets we had 11 amputated limbs. 10 legs and one arm. what have we been able to learn about these individuals burial 1 which is the soldier on the left-hand side with the severe leg injury, we know he was between 25 and 29 years old. the scientist can tell that the way the bones are formed. we know he was likely from upstate new york or new england. how do we figure that out? is amazing stuff. i'm not going to pretend, i am an archaeologist, not a chemist so i can't explain exactly. they do this isotope analysis. this is technology that wasn't around up until 10 or

having a show at the smithsonian was beyond my wildest imagination. joanna: you have talked a lot about the process of creating east series.ves but you came known for polaroid technology, and used polaroid film for well over 30 years of your career. i'm curious, and much of the work -- if much of the work in the present exhibition are shot with polaroid, with the exception of some of the most recent which are digital. that includes the small instant polaroid as well as the large-format 20x24. i'm wondering if you can talk a little bit about the influence of polaroid on the development of your work? having started with hitler moves east, then moving to an instant technology, how that changed what you were doing? in thee is a period early 1980's when i started printing on black-and-white paper, but hand coloring some of the modern romance work. that was my introduction to color. back in the 1960's and 1970's, if you were a serious artist you used black and white. that's the way it was. was edgingloring into color. i even went so far as to develop 8x10 c

so the smithsonian had quite a challenge. neil's suit, it was exposed for a long time, because everyone wanted to see it. it suffered a lot of damage. they took it off display about 13 years ago. and put it in cold storage to figure out how to better treat it and keep it going. a couple years ago, they said it will cost a lot of money to fix this, we will see if we can kickstart it. they did a campaign, raised a lot of money, and were able to renovate the suit. they just unveiled it earlier this week. and you can see it. interestingly, at the air it is and space museum it is not in , the flight gallery, because that is in a bright spot. sunlight would be bad for the suit. they tried to put a better place to put it. to me, it is dramatic that they put it right opposite the first plane that ever flew. the right flyer. flyer. you can see how far we went in those 60 odd years. host: we go to roger in pittsburgh. caller: hello. good morning. thank you for taking my call. i appreciate c-span a lot. i really do. i am 68-year-old. i'
