as ours, even with 19 museums and galleries, only a tiny frak of what we have can be on public display, so to follow david's words, there is a big impetus from inside the smithsonian and outside to make more of it accessible. we have about, let answer say over 20 million visitors a year to our museums, which is a big number but it's a small number, compared with a size of our country and a tiny number compared to the size of the world. and so we feel a strong motivation to make more of it accessible. now our collection has out of the 156 things, over 140 million of them of the 156 million are biological specimens related to the national museum of natural history so that's a complicated area. i doubt that we'll ever digitize all of those things, nor do i think we really have to. but in other areas, for example the asian art galleries which are fabulous, we have digitized the entire collection so even though only a fraction of it is on display, even if we have the luxury of living in washington and coming to the mall frequently from home, as david says, right now today you can look at anything in that collection because of that digitization effort, and so we're tryi

at the smithsonian museum of american history they have one of the vessels, the the philadelphia thoselly sunk during the battle. it is amazing. the fleet was piled up and so is vessels were lined up, arnold was in the center of his line. and they waited. sure enough, even the schooners had a hard time making it up. only the gunboats could get close enough. they would line up firing cannons back and forth. even took a shot and nearly took amount and it was eight hours the smithsonian would get sunk and eventually night with come and arnold had fought them to a job. he had his fleet was a mess. many men had died, but it was a miracle, he miracle, he had done it. but the british were confident they had them trapped in the small bay. so they created their own line below arnold so there's no way for him to escape they're going to get him in the morning. arnold has a council with his officers and one of his officer says look, the only way were going to get out of this as if we sailed to the north and go around the top of the bay. it's the safest thing to do. now arnold headed swashbuckling

smithsonian has a robust web presence. how much of that is credited to the museum experience and how are you making that available to people? we spent time digitizing cardiac images and analyzing them. it was going to be hard to impress me coming into the smithsonian. i have been very impressed with the digitization work. it is a big challenge to know how much to digitize in what order. at any one time with our collection, only a tiny fraction can be on public display. impetus fromg inside the smithsonian and outside to make voice accessible. it more accessible. our visitor numbers are tiny compared with the rest of the world. we feel a strong motivation to make it accessible. over 140 million biological special men's related to natural history. we we will ever digitize those things. our asian art galleries, we have digitized the entire collection. even though only a fraction is , today you can look at anything in the collection because of the digitization effort. is three dimensional digitization. we incorporated inside the 11ollo 11 caps off, -- capsule, 3d digitization. i take no credit for this. the smithsonian was doi
