smokey robinson, good enough to join me right now.t now, smokey robinson, i truly appreciate you coming on and, you know, really here is my first question for you. for all the causes that you can lend your voice and support, why this cause? why this safe drinking water program for children? >> well, brooke, because water is the source of all life. everything that is alive on earth needs water. so and there are many areas in the world where water is so scarce and then where the water is contaminated and polluted and what have you and people still have to drink it, just to have water. and thousands of kids are dying every day because of having to drink that kind of water. so we're trying to combat that, we're trying to do something about it. and to get the purification packets to those areas where people need them so they can have drinking water. >> this is something, smoky, you could have held a huge benefit concert to raise awareness, but instead you are sounding the smoke alarm. this is what you're calling -- sounding the smoke alarm

it's nice to have smokey robinson with us.out how this came about. >> well, a bunch of friends and i got together and we formed smoke alarm to address the problems that people have on the planet, really, that they're in positions to do nothing about. and whatever we could do to help them. and one of my partners is david kalarkie. he has done many things like this for nelson mandela and people like that. and so we hooked up and we formed smoke alarm to tackle some of these problems. and then president clinton, who has been a friend of mine for a long time, we contacted them and we're like in cahoots with them, really, to take care of some of these. he's been doing this for several years. >> it's really about leveraging social media, right? >> absolutely. it is a social media thing. and rather than me calling on some of my friends in the entertainment business and come, let's do a benefit concert which is going to take their time and their efforts to get to where it's going to be and that, it's very simple. all they have to do i

. >> smokey robinson lived across... well, not really. they were older than me. but they were people that i knew and was aware of, but i didn't meet them until i started singing. i mean, they were older than me. i had never seen anyone on a stage until the night i went on the stage, because i hadn't been to a bar or to a show or anything before. but in 1962 in detroit, that was... you were either just... you would either go to one of the factories or you went to show business. it was very easy in 1962 to go into show business, because there were so many producers and so many record companies and so many writers, and it was just happening. and it seemed like it was all just happening that week. they all said, "let's start on monday." >> hinojosa: and was the community supportive of... >> yes, we... that's what i was about to tell you. it's so funny me en i hear my friends talk from that period about their parents being hesitant not... for them to get in show business, whatever. i was the first person in my family to ever make $100 in one day. of course they wanted
