gina cavallaro and matt larsen chronicle their stories of dozens of snipers in their new book, sniper, america's warriors and rocking in afghanistan. gina is here today, a veteran reporter for military times who is embedded with the army and marine corps in iraq and afghanistan. welcome to the show! >> thank you for inviting they. >> it's a great book. have iraq and afghanistan really changed the role of snipers in the u.s. military? >> well, i think in talking to the snipers, i talk to about 30 snipers in the conventional army and special operations community, as well as the marine corps, and as best i can tell there's still the capability for the long shot from one ridge to another, and an afghanistan setting. but what has emerged in this war is a capability and urban set that amounts to something called a sniper assaulter, which is where a sniper would place himself on a rooftop or on a number of rooftops, a team maybe, couple teams, and provide covering fire, multiple ranges, for an assault package on the ground. >> which has proven critical in counter-insurgency and urban operati

when just before 5:00 he appeared to threaten a hostage, a police sniper pulled his trigger. >> he pulled the handgun that he came in with, pointed it at one of the hostages. it's unconfirmed now whether he actually fired the weapon or not. but at that point, our tactical units moved in. they shot the suspect. the suspect is deceased. >> reporter: the beginning of the standoff at about 1:00 was nearly as violent. lee, known as a long-time protester at the discovery channel, walked into the network's lobby, fired a shot from a handgun, and told the people there not to move. he appeared to have explosives strapped to his body and carried backpacks and a box. he kept three male hostages in the first floor lobby. an hour later he began cell phone conversations with police. and the rest of the building, including a day care center, was evacuated. many in neighboring buildings, including shanti, were ordered by police to hunker down. >> it was scary. you couldn't leave the building. the police came and knocked on the door and told us we cannot leave the building until they tell us to. >> report

this is still a very active scene as fbi agents and snipers are moving in under the yellow tape to take position in an effort to, if need be, take out this gunman. now i just talked with police and they did tell me as you mention that the gunman is still loose in hopkins but they have been able to stop him or contain carbon monoxide contain him on one floor. i asked if there are any patients on that floor or at this point if any patients are in danger. i was told, no shall everyone inside is safe at this point. what we know about the gunman, we know this is according to individuals inside the hospital talking with employees who can't get back in at this point. what they are telling me is that allegedly this gunman has a relative in the hospital, they underwent surgery earlier this week and things didn't go quite as planned and the patient was left paralyzed. again we asked the police if they could confirm this for me. they steered away from answering my question. they didn't deny that that may be the case. again at this point a very active scene with police just coming in and out of the
