as you know, the landslide in the state of washington in snohomish county, i think all of america is, you know, listened to the news every day about what is the circumstances of that. will there be a time in the future, a time we'll be able to examine the circumstances around the slide but right now the focus should be on the rescue efforts and the clean up. we are all well aware of that. my question is simply this. where can people look to find more information about the slide hazard? is that something you can be working on? >> so yes, the usgs has a land slide hazard program. it's part of our mission area. we both operate, we have for the public a website which identifies landslide prone areas of the country and presents information on research and how the public should deal with questions of landslides. the usgs -- the responsibility for the land use decisions resides with the state, county and local decision makers. our job is to provide the scientific information that supports smart decisions about land use planning. we also map out the locations of landslides and that includes t

the snohomish county helicopter rescue team jumped into action. pilot flew dangerously close to that cliff. a rescuer gets lowered down, really no margin for error. the man was strapped into a rescue harness and lifted to safety. >> unbelievable. >>> the woman who thought she was getting a tour of facebook with her boyfriend got a whole lot more. >> oh!! . >> reporter: even for this elite unit from the snohomish county helicopter rescue team near seattleit was a jarring sight. the man, stuck high up on a sheer rock face, holding on for dear life. >> i've got him. >> reporter: the man had called 911 for help, but when they told him a rescue team could take hours, he said he couldn't hold on much longer. so, the helicopter made a daring approach. >> put me right behind him. >> reporter: with just ten feet between the rotors and a mountain called chair peak, it was a white-knuckled parking job to hover in position and lower a rescue climber. >> there is not much room. but get me down there and we'll see how this works. >> reporter: the man had no safety equipment, something called free climbing, that we saw up close recently with the world's best, alex honnold. he climbs vertical towers, ropeless, equal parts beautiful and terrifying. in this case, the rescue climber reaches the man, warning him not to reach out to him, and removes his backpack. he then straps him into a harness, before the two are hoisted straight up, on to the helicopt
