as the storm heads east, heavy rain is flooding parts of south carolina, blowing snow causing white-out conditions in indiana and ohio. and blizzard warnings are posted as far north as maine. this storm is wrecking travel plans. more than 900 flights have been canceled across the u.s., with more expected in the next couple of days. here at reagan national airport, freezing rain is delaying some flights. but many passengers are stuck because of snow at their destinations. >> a cancellation? >> reporter: dorian friedman and her daughter were going to lansing, michigan. >> i had a bad feeling on the way here and said, i don't see any planes taking off or landing. so we weren't surprised. but it's a little frustrating. >> reporter: this storm is now bringing snow, freezing rain and high winds to the east coast. forecasts are calling for yet another winter storm to hit the same area this weekend. ♪ [ music ] >> reporter: airports in the washington area and in philadelphia and new york are expected to have the most problems tonight with delays and cancellations. and as that storm closes in on

especially northern texas, panhandle of oklahoma up through kansas this morning the snow is breaking out shown here in white. we'll be watching missouri traveling interstate 70 during the morning hours. that's where you deal with snowy weather and this will continue through much of the day. we just changed over to snow in joplin. interstate 44 right now mostly rain but we'll watch interstate 70 later today. that could be a troublesome drive and a major thoroughfare through the middle of the heartland. this is not a big huge event. one to three inches from indianapolis to st. louis to kansas city to wichita including areas around topeka kansas. other areas of the country won't see much snow today. very cold, though. northern new england very cold. boston is at 22. maine in the single digits with negative numbers in the northern plains. so it's going to be very cold out there today. minneapolis, fargo, duluth and eventually that cold air will head towards chicago late tonight to tomorrow. one spot in this country that i wouldn't want to stand outside in the cold and wait for a ball to drop is in the northern

jon: yes i am. >> the good news we'll get some snow, a white christmas for a lot of people but the badrd conditions and even a slight risk for tornados. let's talk about the storm system as it continues to move across the central u.s. yes, certainly 12 to 18 inches of snow but with wind gusts in excess of 40 to 50 miles an hour. that is going to cause some blizzard conditions. you see where the snow is. we also have some rain falling across the central u.s. but blizzard warnings for half a dozen states right now. let's take a look at it. where you see red, colorado, parts of nebraska, cans sass, up through iowa and wisconsin, that is where we see the heavy snow. winds of 50 miles an hour or more and that will cause blowing snow. visibility down to nothing in some cases. let's take a look at your future radar as we go further out in time. this system will continue to move eastward, pack a punch as well as the threat for severe weather including a risk for tornados across the mississippi river valley today and tomorrow across the southeast. unfortunately the northeast, along the coast, y
