snow. here's the storm timeline. by 8:00,ing light snow in the shenandoah valley. still locally probably won't have any snow, flurry activity. by noon time light snow to moderate snow by mid-afternoon. heavy snow coming in by 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. from the south and west and we'll probably have by that time two or three inches on the ground. and then some very heavy snow coming i tonight that will be covering the entire region and we could have on the ground by this time tomorrow morning up to a foot of snow. and then that very heavy snow will begin to move off to the north and east by 8:00 on saturday morning, and then we'll still have several more inches of snow to deal with during the day on saturday. here is the total i expect from this storm. 18 to 24 inches will be common throughout most of the region. now that area of 20 to 30 inches, the 30 inch amounts may be right along the blue ridge, the eastern side of the blue ridge in madison, green, rappahannock, northern fauquier, western loudo

in the form of snow. and brighter colors of white here, are the heavy consistent snow that has been driving for the last several hours. we see pink here, indicating a mixing down as you get south of alexandria and dc on i-95. but heavy wet snow mixing with sleet. it might work the way into baltimore. but most of it is snow, because the temperatures are cold enough here, to sustain it in the form of snow. zooming out the picture we have the wide range of moisture that is feeding into the cold air. and back to the west of us, warm moisture along the interstate i-70 to columbus and indianapolis. the bigger picture here. we can see this storm satisfy massive storm. two low pressures, one that is feeding the moisture up out of the gulf. and is driving it right into this core of cold air dropped down out of canada over the metro area. and back beyond that, the secondary low that will actually converge the low as it pushes over the atlantic. and that will reinforce the moisture going in to that cold air. and the

snow pla.ers may be able to get into town, but will they be able to get out? we'll find out next. >>> well, here's a good sign. more salt arriving in maryland. today a ship filled with salt made a massive delivery in baltimore. this is one of the nine ships arriving from mexico and chile. they're carrying 40,000 tons of salt each. all that salt is being loaded on the trucks and shipped out there over the state of maryland, virginia, pennsylvania, too. montgomery county officials tell us the county has 100 trucked going back and forth from the baltimore docks to get salt and sand. >>> the storm has postponed business on capitol hill this week. the u.s. house of representatives has canceled recorded votes for the remainder of the week due to the weather. lawmakers won't be back next week either. that's because most of them spend the president's day holiday and week in their home districts. so at this point, it locks like members will be out of the building until monday february 22nd. that's also

right now, light snow trying to reach the ground here but the snow that is definitely reaching the snow is in southwestern virginia, now snowing in lynchburg, roanoke, blacksburg and western parts of north carolina. the closer view of our radar is showing just a little bit of light snow and sleet trying to reach the ground in those pink zones in the southern maryland near the central shenandoah valley and from charlottesville up west of winchester, light snow out in the panhandle of west virginia and in western maryland. and the wider view of that radar shows moisture coming in from the south and west behind where you see the snow. that will change to snow as it gets up our way. 34 in washington. upper 20s to near 30 degrees elsewhere. a huge area under a winter storm warning from 10:00 a.m. today until 10:00 p.m. saturday all across virginia, maryland, the district of columbia and out in the mountains. theimeline for the storm has the light snow later on this morning, heavier snow later on this afternoon, could have about five inches on the ground by sunset. heavier snow moving in over

never pass a snow plow or snow plow train. keep your distance behind the snow plows. we do expect that with intensity of snow that we'll be having that we will not be able to keep all lanes of traffic open. again, interchanges are particularly tricky because the snow plows will put up big piles of snow at the interchange ramp. it can be dangerous going from the main line lanes on to the ramps. which do not have as much snow cleared off of them. it is extremely important if drivers are out on the road that they go slow. they do not pass any snow plows. they be very careful in interchange areas. bridges tend to freeze before the roadways do. we have been fortunate so far that the temperatures have stayed up close to freezing. but over the course of the night we expect them to drop into the mid 20s. we expect to see bridges and overpasses will be freezing. they'll be more dangerous as well. i can no emphasize the importance of staying off the roads if you can. be careful. do not pass no person. now back to the governor. >> any questions? >> in your own experiences how da

it was all snow. we have a snow-sleet mix right now. you can see it right here. this has been shoveled for a while ask then there was the glossy coat of ice over it. and now we have just a little bit of snow and sleet mixing in together. then you have the hard packed area that you have to get through and then you get to the old stuff that packs real through. if you can cut through that layer, then there's still snow men left. i got to give the city credit on clearing out the snow. a couple of days we were out here, this road was completely untouched. the only thing that was getting the snow out of way, was people driving. it's now down to the pavement. we have heard the general, beep, beep, that is of course the vehicles backing up. we saw front end loaders moving the snow around. that has been the big concern. where are you going to put all of this snow so far he they have found enough space for it. this place looks more passable than it did two days ago. all of this stuff has turned to slush. so far the new snow fall has not impacted the road too much itself. s
