snow. let's begin with chief meteorologist, doug kammerer to show who is under a warning. doug, you warned us of this on wednesday. >> you mentioned we have not seen snow in this area since 1979. we had a third of an inch of snow at the airport. officially, i wasn't born yet. that's not true. what is true, is we have snow making our way. don't think we are trying to fool you. a lot of people are saying this is too early. mother nature says it is, too. 48 degrees now with winds out of the east-southeast at 6 miles per hour. we are seeing some rain across the area and some snow in the viewing area toward west virginia and hardy county. seeing snow around the petersburg area. most of the rain is not affecting us. you can see it moving up from the south and west. the coastal storm has yet to develop and will develop overnight tonight. we'll continue to watch as it does. rain moves in at 9:00 in the area. tomorrow morning, raining heavily in places. 41 degrees at 5:00 a.m. we'll see snow to the

rain then snow. those areas getting more snow north and west of the city. winds strong at 15 to 20 miles per hour. gusts up to 35 miles per hour. these temperatures will be cold, 35 to 39 degrees. our current weather now shows a mass of moisture in the area as the lows are making their way up the eastern seaboard. you can see that rain-snow line. the higher elevations getting all the snow. the lower elevations getting all rain. once these move up the eastern seaboard and winds witch out of the northwest, canadian air pushes the wind in. that gives us better chances of seeing snow in the greater baltimore area. anywhere from a trace to $2 inches in the area associated with the storm. there will be more as you go out west and up north into pennsylvania. futurecast again tells the same story as rain pretty much all day. then around 6:00 we see our best chance of winds coming strong out of the northwest. you can see from northern baltimore county over to all points west it looks like all snow. get ready in those areas for a nice, white evening, if you will. the

still looks like a big snow north and west. a big snow. gives you an idea how dynamic the system is. here is what we are thinking in terms of snowfall around the immediate metro area. south and east of i-95. maybe a trace. to maybe an inch. i think it will end in snow all the way down into st. mary's county before it gets out of here tomorrow night. but essentially in terms of the accumulation east of i-95 not that much. west including the district, gaithersburg, rockville, 1 to 3 inches. out no loudoun county west, up into hagerstown over to cumberland 6 inches. almost a lock at this point. already snowing in oakland, parts of west virginia. a couple of pictures from timberline in west virginia. already snowing there. it is on the way. we are still concerned about this though because of the potential for tree damage and then power outages. a lot of canopies still on the trees. and it is what happened in denver on monday could happen here. a warning for frederick county, loudoun county. here comes the storm. cold air beginning to funnel do

a trace of snow measured. here in the city, officially, we had no measurable snow. keep in mind that 63 is the normal high for this time of year. we have been well short of that for a couple of days. temperatures will stay close to freezing north and northwest of the city. it has gone below freezing in some areas in the mountains to the west. the storm center itself is south of cape cod right now and pulling to the north east, taking all of that stormy weather with it. it will be quiet out here for a couple of days, but there is another disturbance in the plains. that comes in early next week. tonight, unseasonably cold, northwest winds 10-15. we do have freeze and frost warnings in effect for the area. the purple-shaded areas from new jersey back across maryland and the western part of the state. mostly sunny tomorrow, unseasonably chilly. only 46-54 the high. keep in mind 63 is typical. west winds at 5-10 miles per hour. small craft advisories for the early morning and afternoon, 15-20 knots and two-3 foot shop in the day. by monday night, toward midnight, and ear

the snow we saw today was a wet snow. that snow is now going to be able to freeze and some very cold air is making its way in right now. take a look at the temperatures out there, currently we're sitting in the 30s, 37 in washington, 34 in gaithersburg, that's where we're starting to see the problem. 32 in frederick and hagerstown, most areas getting at or below the freezing mark tonight. there's the freeze warning, and really it does encompass just about everyone who's watching us this evening, you will be at or at least close to freezing. our storm system which brought us the rain, wind and snow is out of here, that's the good news. what's coming in behind it, and just how low will our numbers go. a lot of people waking up early tomorrow for the marine corps marathon. we'll show you how cold it will be. >> if you live east of i-95, you probably saw little if anything in the way of snow. just a few miles away, though, an unusual sight for october that caught some people offguard. derek ward spent the day in lose burg. on

not pretty snow. not powdery snow, but wet snow. sticking to all those leaves and maybe some trees coming down and power outages. that's what we have seen in denver, that's what we have seen in texas as this storm has been coming in our direction. let's check out radar right now. because we do just have a little bit of light rain down to our south, but this is going to develop in the overnight hours and it is mostly going to be rain for the metro area between now and tomorrow afternoon. let me show you the radar. this is a big storm and the action gets going when this storm makes its way to the coast where it is forecast by all of our computer models to bomb into a huge nor'easter and very rapidly develop and throw in a lot of moisture and also a lot of cold air into this picture. so now, we have some very rare october winter storm warnings. everything you see in the pink there, which does include frederick county and loudoun county and a winter storm watch for montgomery and howard and points to the north and east. that means sever

j.c., we've had snows in october before.ve times we've had measurable snow, another four times we've had a trace. but the earliest we've ever had measurable snoaferl october 10th, 1979. on that day there were parts of montgomery county that had over 11 inches of snow even though downtown had just .30, the record october snowfall for washington downtown is two inches on october 30th, 1925. so not unprecedented, but rather rare to have snow this early. winter storm watch now in effect from fredrick county, northern baltimore county, the rest of western maryland, eastern west virginia and the shenandoah valley and the park. that means the weather service believes there's a potential for five inches of snow or more. that's what the criteria is around here. clouds will be increasing quickly this afternoon as temperatures only get to the lower 50s at best, maybe 51. clouds thicken up tonight, and by 9:00 we might even have a few showers out there, especially south and west of town. temperatures will be dropping through the 40s, an

now nice the snow has finally stopped. if you woke up and had no snow, are you lucky. but we have 4 inches in westminster. >> we just have snow flakes downtown, but now it is frozen overnight. let's look quickly at the heaviest amounts we saw. 9.5 inches out in western maryland, near frostburg. most points east of the city stayed dry. this is all a concern. the areas that saw the heavy snow, they froze overnight. black ice. 38 in downtown baltimore. 33 out at b.w.i. the sun is back out. as we go through the day, that will help them out some. the winds will be out of the northwest. as we come up, we will be detailing what it will be like for trick-or-treaters in the evening. still likely to be cold. that coming up in the insta-weather plus forecast. >> we keep saying the same thing. it is not even halloween, but it looks like christmas in parts of maryland. >> well, snow-tober hasn't happened in 33 years. >> this is pretty disgusting. it is cold, wet, messy, and not a good day for your car to die. >> even though it is only the end of october, carroll county looked like

how much snow. doug kammerer has the answer to both those questions. he's in the storm center. what about it, doug? >> some areas are going to see a lot of snow from this, especially this early in the season. those of us along i-95 and to the east, this is a mainly rain event. they will see a nasty saturday with a lot of rain. one to two inches of rain. winds 30 to 40 miles per hour. chilly, cold temperatures. 49 degrees is the current temperature with winds out of the east at 10 mirpsz. not much going on on the radar. showers back into petersburg and virginia suburbs. look at this. it is snowing in portions of west virginia and the higher elevations of the blue ridge. we are seeing the rain make its way toward the area. the rain will change the snow to the west. we are going to see very bad conditions. i mean, point-blank, it is going to be nasty tomorrow. the rain moving in around 9:00. dropping to 42 at 11:00. 41 by 5:00 a.m. with a heavy rain. this is for most of the region. it points off to the

so this is an historic snow storm and parts of new jersey, west milford reporting nine inches of snow. it's really come down out there. and will continue to do so throughout the evening house, throughout the nighttime hours and even across new england, we're looking at heavy snow possible throughout the rest of tomorrow morning. you will be looking at very impresssive snow totals across the area. right now we still have heavy snow across eastern pennsylvania, moving into upstate new york and also pushing into southern portions of new england, baltimore and dc, you got snowflakes. most of that winding down. new york city we have had some warmer air pushing in to the area. you can see that rain snow line, basically right over our city. some areas are seeing some of that snow changing over to rain. so that's something to keep in mind. you will be seeing more heavy snow as we head into tonight before it winds down as we head into the overnight hours. that's something to keep in mind. travel will be very dangerous not just in new york city, but across the across the entire northeast. maine
