you have stranded cars covered be snow, power lines covered with snow as well. half a foot of snow fell onto parts of staten island. the rain started falling about 11:00 yesterday morning. we were here for that. the snow started falling shortly thereafter. it continued to fall through the night and ending very early this morning. it covered downed power lines, also the cars that were damaged by floodwaters. then even more people lost electricity. approximately 14,000 utility customers have no electricity. that supp from 9,400 as staten islanders have been trying to recover. they've been cleaning up inside and outside of their homes if they even can be at their home. evacuation centers were made up and buses available. sanitation crews have been very busy, working around the clock picking up piles of debris. we've seen them out here plowing the snow off the roadways. that's the latest from staten island. i'm katherine craig, back to you. >> what a mess. nbc meteorologist bill karins is tracking the storm. how ominous, that huge pile of debris covered in snow? >>

hartford, connecticut, 4 inches of snow. central park in new york city, almost 5 inches of snow is almost unheard of, wasser, mass., 5 inches, danbury, connecticut, 9. and one in new jersey with a foot of snow. the storm almost looks like a tropical storm. that's the center of it. south of nantucket. its anding over the interior sections. it's wrapping in some warmer air, changing over snow to rain in areas of long island. the temperatures have warmed up even at the upper levels of the storm. that will help things during the day today. the worst of it definitely on cape cod right now. look at the wind gusts. 59 on martha's vineyard, 55 on provincetown. cape cod, this is the worst of it for you. you're getting the rain and the pounding wind. w worcester, the snow with the leaves on the trees aren't doing so well. major highways fine. secondary roads slushy. during the afternoon hours the roads will clear up. most of us will head into the 40s. it will be a slushy, wet mess by later this afternoon. >> it will warm up and melt o

look at the snow.about the same thing where they are, 2 to 4 inches along the coastline. upwards of 6, 9 1/2 inches in seaside community just south of where we are. incredibly, the current plan is to allow residents of an island south of here who have been unable to get back to their homes to go back there for a few hours this afternoon, so they are expecting, of course, the weather to improve, possibly even getting some sunshine this afternoon. won't that be a welcome relief? but the fact of the matter is, at least 40,000 more customers are without power because of that nor'easter that swept through here overnight. so it's a big mess. you can still see here, they do have power, thankfully, but the roads are an absolute mess. all this heavy, wet snow. so now they're going to have to get through that. and let's just see how the gas lines are going to be today, now that there are additional power outages and how that might also impact the supply trucks that are trying to get to the gas stations are that

a little bit of wet snow. it's all rain.se areas in yellow, orange and red off the atlantic sea board off the mouth of the delaware bay. this is rotating around center of circulation from the coastal storm system tracking to the north and northeast and heading toward cape cod and eastern parts of new england by late tonight and tomorrow morning. by then, we dry out. between now and then, the moisture is going to crank inland. as it does, it may, as it comes down close and north of washington, change over to wet snow as we get into the afternoon hours. the mitigating factor, the temperatures are well above freezing. low and mid-40s. it keeps road temperatures above freezing. we'll melt on roads and accumulate a little bit on some of the grassy areas. maybe a dusting at the most around washington. otherwise, a few flurries. the heavier amounts north and east maryland. the sun comes back tomorrow. a wonderful warming trend as we get toward the weekend. sunshine might get to the low 60s saturday, sunday and monday. back to you.

all of the snow and late this afternoon, the snow line started creeping from west to east.t of the shore now from where we just had the live report here in atlantic city, new jersey, all the way up to new york. they're expecting between a couple of inches of snow, probably two to four inches of snow for new york city and the borroughs there and along long island and back up into the northwest as well. the higher elevations here could pick up as much as three to six and again, the nor'easter is farther off shore and that is pretty good. still, problems all along the northeast coast line here and there is going to be a bit of a storm surge. the winds are 40 to 50 miles per hour and we haven't seen anything so far that has been up 60 plus. a few have made it up over 50 miles an hour and there is no doubt the high beach surf and most changing over to snow. along the shoreline there, they could have and that is a couple of inches of snow. along the coastal areas, we're talking flood warnings. i fly you here to show you what we don't . have a good day. earlier, there was part of

rain switching over to some snow. mainly as we go into the afternoon but we will call it a within theory mix before that. we look -- wintery mix before that. most of the rain is across the eastern shore right now. it's to the south of baltimore but all this is beginning to work its way up towards the north. so we zoom in across the eastern shore where we are seeing moderate amount of rain falling now. you can see that in the yellows and orange colors around henderson and also goldsboro and row price and centerville getting in on that heavier rainfall across the area. also, sliding a little bit further to the south and east you can see around mill creek and also carters plains woodland getting in on that. so we are going to be dealing with some very wet weather throughout the day and a within theory mix. around 3 or 4 -- wintery mix. around 3 or 4 it will be on the rough side. temperatures at 38 in baltimore it's cold morning. 31 in manchester. and 33 in emmettsburg and havre de grace in the upper 30s. 39 chestertown a

the rain has been mixing with some snow. you can see the impact of this current offshore storm, the nor'easter east of new jersey, having a minimal impact. it is rough on the coast. certainly the whether staying out to sea and farther north of us. as compared to sandy, it is farther offshore and is moving north instead of west. all of that is good for us. we avoid the worst of it. the snow is coming down. some very strong winds on the coast as well. we can show you winds are gusting over 40 miles an hour. also 40 at lewis, delaware. winds are gusting well over 40 east of merit -- maryland and delaware. 43 mile an hour gusts. nothing like we saw with sandy. still significant, though. wind advisory inland, high wind warnings along the coast of new jersey. so far, they have been held down in maryland but it is getting chilly. 36 on the boardwalk. mixed precipitation the last hour at the airport. it is cold, even below freezing. tonight as the storm is moving fartherorth, there may be some wet snow mixed with the rain and might
