the snow level has got to be fairly high to get snow to stick like this. any lower mountain passes and the snow was pretty quick to melt because the roads are still warm from summertime. as we look at u.s. 93 this is the pass in idaho. the snow levels tonight are down falling to 5,000 feet, and that is where we're going start to see snow accumulating. the valleys in western montana, butte, anaconda, georgetown lake, you're going to get a couple of inches of snow overnight. our concern is its wet snow and wet snow is heavy and can pull down power lines pretty easy. we'll watch for that and warn truckers, hunters, campers, you're going to have wet snow and it will be cold in the mountains tonight. we have impacts with winter weather advisories down in central idaho mountains. we'll continue to see this winter weather tracking its way farther than south southeast as the storm moves in that direction. while we have freeze warnings in nevada, we have the higher hills and higher mountain tops of northeast nevada and winds die down in the southeast. the cold air

today the snow reaches some tahoe ski reports. these this is the first snow of the season. the pictures were taken around 1:340 this afternoon. some of it looks like we're ready to ski. right now let's check in with rob mayeda. that kind of got me psyched for ski season. >> some interesting changes in the area around the bay area, not just the rain fall but the wind shift. september 21st, see onshore winds racing through the golden gate racing north the east. and if you can imagine, it's sort of like an elongated football field, the winds moving west to east. but today the cold front on the approach, the rain started develop and the winds moved south to north bring in the moisture from the south and instead of going end zone to end zone, changing the wind direction to go from sideline to sideline. and the race course isn't set up for the southerly winds. the hope was that when the cold front went by that that could shift the wind back. but the winds stayed out of the southwest today. so the race area not in the configuration you would want. there is hope tomorrow, though. w

early this morning we've got snow levels crashing down in montana, and in idaho.long the continental divide. we have winter storm watches that are changing over now to winter advisories. and winter storm warnings, because of powerful winds coming in here and above 8,000 feet the high mountain snow is going to total up to at least a foot. some of the valleys in western montana are going to get one to three-inches of snow, especially if you are near that 5,000-foot level and that's where the met snow could bring in power outages through the week. speaking of power out i believes wind gusts have been impressive through the southwest. earlier san francisco 41 miles per hour gusts for you and up to 40 to 50 in parts of the southwest. as this storm is dipping in making itself known. it's got a little support from the jet stream, making it a stronger storm. but the exciting part is the first mountain snow of the season. >> world leaders, nobel prize winners and everyone rock stars are coming together to solve the worlds problems. we'll tell you the big issues former pres

we have snow levels falling, temperatures cooling and i have mountain snow to tell you about. i'll show you where it will fall - coming up next. >>> >> i'm metrologist rebecca stevenson. here it is, the first day of fall. it feels cool, especially the north-west where we get the first falls. fair bit of rain, west of the kaz cades, and snow levels will drop down 5,000 to 6,000 feet. wet snow above that. the weather we are watching is the wind. they'll die off later. we have dust up to 35-40 miles per hour. in portland and seattle we'll have wind gusts potent at we look to the south-west. with all the flood concerns it's good to hear about falling snow levels. when the moisture comes in, it does not fall as rain fall and go down to the rivers and streams, it will be wet snow. we are seeing some rain along the westside of the rockies. it is on the east side that won't get much in the way of rainfall. most will fall in the mountains and we expect it to be chilly in the north. we'll show you temperatures coming up. >> welcome to al jazeera news special. good to have you with us. i

this is the first measurable snow since april. some cars did have to be turned around, flip-flops not great with snow. some people headed there from the bare area say they just were not prepared. >> snowing on us, and so we thought we were going to be socked in for the night on the ridge, but here we are. as you can see this is all i've got. everything else is wet. >> ski resorts pretty happy about this. they say they hope the early snow is a sign of a good winter season to come. >> it is great to see. i don't know necessarily if it's going to stick. let's turn now to meteorologist mark tamayo. >> the weather is behaving like it should be. quite an interesting development yesterday in the sierra with the snow levels. they were supposed about 8,000 feet but some of the colder air gets transported to the surface and as a result snow down to 6500 feet. in the bay area we had the heavy downpours yesterday but today as we get ready for fall, some patchy fog out there. no raindrops to worry about for the second half of the weekend. we'r

snow. we have it in parts of the rockies, and let's get to it. it's not super widespread. this is mostly the higher elevations, 5,000 feet and above, and we have the mountain passes, and it's cooler and you drop down into the weather system to get into the snow range, so the higher elevations, we have had reports of some places getting over 1 foot of snow, and with more on the way, we could have another foot. jackson wyoming is one of those places, so if you like to snow at jackson hole, you're already starting to get that. because of the wet weather and the wind, we have the winter severstorm warnings and advisorn effect. there will slowly go out into the plains and shift. but in the meantime, 10-20° below average as the system comes n as the system comes in across the country, not as dramatic a temperature drop. and ahead of this, we have had a really warm flow. so anywhere from the 80s in northern parts of the midwest to the 90s in portions of texas. so it's very impressive. you can already see where the next system is starting to push in, and because of that, the fog w
