in washington they decided they are going to call it the snowquester. not my word, theirs. the federal officials have shut down offices and by the end of the day, d.c. could be buried under 10 inches of wet heavy snow. nearly a million kids in the cool district from ohio to d.c. and all of those districts have the day off today. some 242,000 people, most of them in virginia and they are without power right now. northern virginia could get as much as 30 inches of snow. that's where we find joe johns this morning. every time we come to you, i look for the snow build up on you. so far so good but that's just the beginning, isn't it? >> reporter: it is just the beginning, we've seen it very steady and continuous and now it is a little bit more intermittent if you will. and i expect that to go on through the afternoon. we've gotten our yard stick out and at least where i am, i've measured from place to place where it looked like the snow was untouched about 6 inches of snow so far right here in downtown winchester, although that's by no means a scientific reading. and we figure

david, how bad is this snowquester going to get? >> it looks like it's pretty bad, norah. we have a band of moderate to heavy snow from minneapolis, as you just saw, and this is rapidly building towards the chicago area. it's going to be a tough day and nice there. that's where some of the heavy snow is going to be certainly over the next 12 hours. we can see this stripe here indicating 6 to 12 inches of snow through minneapolis, through chicago, through parts of northern and central indiana is probably where the heaviest snow will be. late tonight, particularly tomorrow the attention shifts to atlanta. right now the dividing line is going to be the i-95 corridor from baltimore to d.c. somewhere along there we could have 6 to 10 inches on either side of d.c. or baltimore. you head further west into the mountains, into this purple area we'll be measuring the snow possibly one to two feet. again, that will be through tomorrow and then also tomorrow night. now the other part of this storm is the coastal flooding and this could be a big story on the jersey shore into the delma

snowquester. we're right now at one of the super size salt domes here in northern virginia.ing to give you a sense of how massive this thing is right here. look up to the top and tell me that about 6,000 tons of salt in this dome alone. i've been kind of playing with a little bit. it's basically what you would expect to see on your typical highway or on your local street or what have you, but right on 4 495, the capital beltway. you basically have these huge front loaders. the front loaders will be coming in from this direction right here with the huge big blades. they'll scoop up some of the salt right here in this dome and they'll basically take that salt over to some trucks, load it just beyond my shoulder over here. each one of those trucks has a capacity of about 11 tons of salt so you'll basically see those front loaders come in and out all morning and basically some of the spokesmen -- one of the spokesmen that we spoke with basically said that they'll be ready and deploy them on the interstates. >> they will be in place as soon as this storm hits. they'll be prestage
