hawaii. all, my heavens, they described all sorts of proceedings around his return. so i was able to see where he was repaired, one thing and another but it was amazing to me, like no other experience i've had as a researcher. when i got home, as i said i did know what difference it would make to my book, but i just felt i had to write about hawaii and my experience there. so one thing that the book concludes is not one actually but three of what i call interludes, in which i describe my own experience as a researcher going to places that are significant to the story. first hawaiian, then i decided i better go to the cherokee nation as well. there are lots of interesting sites to see down there. and, finally, the third was about cornwall itself which i knew already any kind of intimate way. that's a kind of unusual, the book has an unusual architectu architecture, th these so-called interludes. but they became very much part of not only the process but i felt fine of the story itself. >> i'm interested in your connection with this story with your previous work. about 20

hawaii -- what could be better? most of my research i went as far as whister. so i didn't know why i was going to hawaii but i went. and it was a great trip. i think i was there 2-3 weeks. there were good documents i found in the museum library in missionary library in hundred honolulu. but the big island to the south was the exciting part to visit and it was a process to find out. he grew up in a village on the west coast of the big island. which doesn't exist anymore. the village is gone. but i was able to contact some of his descendants. he never married and had had children, but he had brother and sisters so there are collateral descendants that very much remember. you mention this name in hawaii and they know who he was. they call him the first hawaiian christian. he is famous there. i went to this little beach on the southwest side of the big island which was the site of his village. it was thrilling to stand in his foot steps. and then i went to another place 50 or so miles to the north still on the coast where after, i didn't say anything about his family

this powerful quake off of chile's coast is pushing strong waves toward hawaii's shoreline. so to explain sort of how all of this works, i want to bring in our nbc meteorologist bill karins with more. and just, when you see -- you hear the word tsunami, let's get something clear. the hawaiian islands are not being washed away, or not under the threat of being washed away, but they're calling it a tsunami advisory. explain, bill. >> well, even though hawaii is 12 hours away, by the time -- that's how long it would take the wave to travel. the first waves are expected to reach in the next 20 minutes. if it had been a big, huge tsunami wave, that would be moving into the whhawaiian islands. the one heading for hawaii, estimated one foot. if you're standing at the beach, you may not even notice it, but what you don't know that's happening is under the water, and the wave is going to mess with the currents and the rip currents. and that's why they want to be extra careful. they're telling people to stay out of the water until at least noon today in the hawaiian islands with that adv

so relaxing. hawaiian airline shares are soaring. in 2013 hawaii carried over 9.9 million passengers.jing as well. let's bring in the president and ceo of hawaiian airlines. a lot of analysts praise your airline because you're willing to cut routes of the past year and adding such as honolulu to beijing. what are the areas you see for growth? >> we actually are pretty good on growth. we're playing a macro shift towards people getting to that kind of income level where they can contemplate international trips. so when we look ahead, we see a lot of growth and prospect. >> in terms of honolulu to beijing nonstop flight that starts april 16, do you see adding more routes specifically to china? where are you expect there to be route changes? >> well, we're expecting to see route changes to come in the form of additional routes. when we start in beijing, we're waiting to see how that pans out. we have high expectations. for the route, if it meets the expectations there are an enormous number of centers that could provide us with traffic for service to hawaii. >> you can't argue with the wa
