so we are in long beach. and we are in the middle of the street here.catch the traffic light swaying in the breeze, as they say, and you have got the power lines starting to shake and rattle and roll just a little bit now. so, here in long beach, we are on a barrier island here, and this could be the impact point for hurricane irene, and that is still several hours away from now, but it is a barrier island to the south of long island and we are about 25 miles east of manhattan. it is really coming down now. now, we are only about two the three feet, three the four feet actually above sea level here, and some parts of long beach are below sea level. the boardwalk here is 15 feet above sea level, and that is just beyond us now. and now, look at, this all of the sudden, it calmed down, and that is how the squalls go. one of the big concerns here, drew and natalie, is that as the storm surge comes up, and the ocean is this way, that it will be wrapping around so it will cause not only flooding they suspect here in this low-lying obviously closest to the bea

long beach, new york, where al roker has been. i don't think we have al with us necessarily. he's waving, maybe we do. okay, so michelle, we were just looking at the picture of long beach, new york, where we know that high tide was supposed to hit right around now. which means with the very apex of the storm, flooding could be occurring. we know that that area had been compromised about four blocks south of where al is, i think the camera is pointed exactly where the area has been compromised, the berms, everybody, as al was explaining to us earlier, mother nature has eroded away the berms, that which we try to put in there and you try to do your best to sustain any damage from mother nature's full forces. but in this case, this looks like it has been damaged. how deeply compromised, we don't know right yet and we sure hope al is in a safe position. i know we'll get to al as soon as we can. jeff ranieri, let's talk with you as we stay with the picture. jeff, as we bring you in and voicing over this. high tide is going to bring in tremendous surge. we're going to have these pounding waves for quite some time. w

just in the last 20 minutes or so in long beach, which is not that far away, about a 45 minute drive without the traffic. a lot of new yorkers will say i'm not going to make that in 45 minutes. but without the traffic. just an hour ago, street flooding, an hour ago the water was way in here. now you see it up to the curb, coming out several more feet. that's on the ground level. the beach, the board walk is about 50 yards that way. water is starting to flow in, which tells you what? the water is high enough that it's coming in from the board walk. remember we're right now getting heavy rain. the storm is several hours away. however, high tide is about an hour and a half away. not sure how far you can see, you see sandbags going in. steps down, driveways down. that's what you see in the coastal communities. people from getting the water from getting into the low-lying areas here. you're beginning to see the middle of the street. that was dry just a couple hours ago. it's harder to see up above us, the big concern are power outages. the power lines are beginning to blow. as you look do

long beach and they're seeing intense wave action. rob, can you tell us? >> reporter: i can't hear the program, so just tell me when to go. >> reporter: anderson, long beach, the winds remain the same and if anything have picked up. irene continues to roll this way. irene is still a hurricane, although you would describe it as a minimal hurricane. i have been in a lot of minimal hurricanes, and it's a still a hurricane. we're taking damage on the boardwalk right now as water continues to fall in. it's tough to see with the connection, but those winds are massive. that surf is pounding the shoreline and has completely wiped out the man made berm they put up to protect the hotel, the boardwalk and that town. and we'll walk this way and show you the lifeguard building, the headquarters there for i don't know how many years ripped away from the foundation and pinned down. that water is not supposed to be there. it's a good waist deep, and it's not supposed to be there. as far as i can saerks the streets are flooded. not only flooded but flooded with waves on top of the water. so surf in parts of the t

long island with strong waves. irene's storm surge was so powerful it ripped this life guard tower from its location on long beach and slammed it against the boardwalk were homes around long beach are flood and people are bailing out the water. in new york city water rushed into the streets of lower manhattan. there is flooding up and down the east coast and in some areas the water is still rising. >> i want people to understand that this is not over. >> reporter: the storm forced airlines to cancel some 10,000 flights but there's good news for stranded travelers. most major airports will be back open on monday. long beach, long island. >> the news that new york's airports are reopening is music to the ears of stranded bay area travelers. another 41 flights at s.f.o. were canceled today as irene's ripple effect continued to be felt. so far no flights at s.f.o. have been canceled for tomorrow. all those grounded flights could be good news for drivers. analysts say the diminished demand for gas and couped up storm victims could bring prices down. it is not clear how much prices could drop. we have posted the latest on

show you areas along long island so you get an idea of what we're talking about, 6.5 million people living there, that is lower manhattan and as you move along long island, the beachand then you get to fire island, about there, and you begin the hamptons about there. and west hampton dunes and west hampton beach and keep going, south half ton and all the rest and right in the middle of all of that is a town, west half ton dunes, the early 1990s, the thin stretch of land there, there was a no name storm -- '80s, i guess, the storm washed out the road and created a new channel in there and they thought maybe they would have to shut the town down and instead won a lawsuit against the federal government over a dispute with jetties and were able to rebuild the community, and there are 300 homes, a gorgeous stretch of white sand out there and great fears, there were over the last day that the surge would cut a new channel and make the whole thing impassable. the mayor is on the line with us. how is west half ton dunes, mr. mayor. >> caller: good morning, shep, we're doing okay. you know, as you know, it is doing what it is supposed to do. sustained minimal damage, but,

long beach on long island in new york. and john, what are you facing there? what are you seeing so far? >> suzanne, you heard mayor bloomberg talking about the worries, the storm surge. we're in tropical storm winds, probably somewhere in the 30s. you're starting to feel the winds picking up, some of the gusts you mentioned, the storm down a little bit south of here near atlantic city. the big fear here in these low-lying communities, this community has been evacuated, a mandatory evacuation. you can see the sign behind me for the route out. there's water in the streets. you think not so bad. if you look out on to the water, the waters are very high, high tide about 2 1/2, 3 hours from now. the storm is making its way here, 2, 2 1/2 hours away, high tide, 2, 2 1/2 hours away. that is the big fear here. you head out of the town as you'd go to go into new york city, some of the streets are flooded. most of it is about ankle deep. in the middle of the street, it's still dry. the big fear is as the high tides come in here over the next couple of hours, the storm comes with it, heavier rains

reason that we are positioned here in long beach, which is a barrier island off long island is that it is one of the possible targets for the eye of hurricane irene. sostraight in the path of that eye passing right over us, you see the surf kicking up here, it's been building each day, but remember the storm is at least 340 miles due south of here so we have quite a ways, not expected to hit as chad was telling you until sunday morning most likely, so that storm surge will really be coming up. these barrier islands are very close to sea level. only about three to four feet above sea level. so one of the things i've been doing along the beach here in the last couple of days is to take some of this stand, move it around and try to create more of a barrier, so you see these dunes that they're building up here, i would say, i'm five feet tall, so at it's highest, it's built up to maybe 20 feet here. so trying to protect the buildings that are on the opposite side in front of me here, some of these buildings are about 10 stories high, probably at their highest and the thing about that is that when a hurricane comes in, remember the higher up you are, and

and that's going to affect the north facing beaches of long island which there are many and a lot of bays. so, we're not done with that. we got flooding to talk about. in inland sections. flooding will be worse away from the coast. ten to 15 inches of rain. we've already had philadelphia has had record setting rainfall for this month. washington, d.c. new york city. and it's heading up towards boston and new england. and interior sections are going to see flooding. we have river flood warnings for connecticut, massachusetts, new jersey, rhode island, new york state. the new york state thruway has flooding and mudslides. so, you know, even if you're not along the coast, this is really being felt. in fact in some ways more inland than along the coast, alex. >> i know. our crews will be standing out and bringing us pictures of things like the mud there on i 87, the new york state thruway. al, folks that are there on that boardwalk, are they all officials there or are there people coming out to check out what's happening? >> you know, look. there are bound to be some looky lous. for the most part

long. and virginia beach near so many naval installations, folks there getting some last rays of sunshine,ast rays they might see in a while. that's elizabeth pram. meantime, new york city, rockaway beach in if queens, we're already seeing massive surf there, there could be some issues with the airports nearby. janice dean is in the extreme weather center keeping track of everything. >> reporter: not only airports, they're talking about shutting down the subway system as well here in new york city. of course, we're awaiting mta's decision on that. so this is a category two storm, they've downgraded it a little bit, but the takeaway message is exactly the same as it was yesterday as a category three storm. this is going to cause some major damage all up and down the coastline in terms of storm surge, in terms of flooding and destructive, damaging winds for a duration of time. we're going to be dealing with this for most of the weekend for a lot of folks. so still a category storm, 105 mile-per-hour sustained winds, and this is a very large, lumbering system, so it's going to take some time

long island likely to take a direct hit. so many people go out to the beaches, you are not going this weekend. you are getting away from the beach. >> greta: thank you rick. >> now to north carolina, jonathan serrie. >> reporter: the calm before the storm is surreal. interesting story to tell you. before your show we had a few moments to go to a local seafood restaurant to get dinner with our crew. while we were there, ordering, we were at this corner table, beautiful view of the water. while we were ordering, we noticed this work crew outside the windows. they were hammering plywood to the outside of the windows. by the time we were done ordering our view was almost completely obstructed. while on the inside of the restaurant it was crowded with customers and wait staff and seemed like business as usual. on the outside they were clearly preparing for a severe storm moving into this area. we've been seeing scenes like this up and down the north carolina coast on these barrier island communities. businesses trying to stay open for as long as possible to maximize

beach, we will find everyone. so, i wanted to let you know that we have a list here of who is on the list so far. it is not that long. if there is a way that you can help to spread the word for people that would jump online and get the city back and put their information in, there would be a better list for everyone. i will throw it over to -- to his back from vacation. >> we have the neighborhood organizations and also the merchant information to anyone who qualifies as a neighbor, we have had discussions here and the commercial entities are still neighbors. >> to that end, -- >> i had gone to the process with city planning to get building permits. they require you to get a notice and to get the organizations that requests it. they have a list of hundreds of them that you have to pay in a lot of money to do these mailings that probably just end up in the trash somewhere. i bring this up because it is beneficial to you and might be a list already in existence. >> the list that is compiled and available to us and anyone is out of date. that has been what we were using and it did not yield the results that we wanted.
