sobriety, for me, it's an inside job. it's about in here, and it's about keeping that hole filled up. many different addictions tend to go together. for example, if you've ever been to a meeting of alcoholics anonymous, you'll find that even people who are now not drinking tend to smoke very heavily. there's a tremendous amount of overlap, and some people think that's because once you start smoking, that's going to lead you to other drugs. that's probably not the reason. the probable reason is that there are certain personality configurations which lead to addiction to all sorts of substances, and therefore, all of the different addictions actually have a genetic connection. addiction is a chronic relapsing disease. sometimes, people have to fail several times. for example, there's literature suggesting that people who try to quit smoking, after they try about seven to ten times, they're more likely to succeed. so something happens in the process, where they learn what it's going to take to really abstain from cigarettes.
