social security, hugely important. social security is facing a funding shortfall it has been for many years. administrations of not seize the opportunity to make the changes that will be needed to close the shortfall. so what does that mean? there is a history of social security going broke. that is actually not correct. what the situation is, social security is called a pay-as-you-go program. that is the people who are working now are paying into the program with the social security taxes. that revenue is going out to the people who are receiving benefits now. as the population has aged, there are fewer people of working wage paying into the system for the number of people who are retired and taking benefits at older ages. and so over the years a trust fund wasn't built up of the surplus contributions for many years, that has been drawn on in order to pay the benefits owed to retire workers. early to mid 30s social security trust fund will run out. when that happens it does not mean social security is not going to exist anymore. that does mean if congress does nothing all benefits will be cut by about 20%.
