betty: in the meantime, soda sales are planning. make it at home, but people don't want to drink coca-cola anymore. they don't want to drink sufferings. daniel: that is what is happening. that is why coca-cola is looking for a different angle. what they have done is replicate coca-cola in a home solution. they thought that if they put that logo on a product and take g logo and put it on a device -- $375 device -- it is myopic. how do you think people will buy this? betty: the reviews on that have been pretty bad. daniel: i wish they would have come out with something better that make more sense. i want better competition. i want healthy competition at the value. that is what makes the category alive. it has been happening in the copycatting white. betty: don't you have a partnership with pepsico? -- it has been happening in the coffee category. you can't say why don't people want to do coca-cola at home and do pepsico at home? daniel: the pepsi's homemade, half the calories, naturally sweetened, no high fructose corn syrup. people w

even without a soda tax the number of teenagers in the city drinking soda went down 24 percent between 2007 and 2013. >>> and besides cutting soda, we know getting enough sleep can also help prevent weight gain. but for teenagers that may not be enough. a new study shows just going to bed late can also lead to putting on the pounds. a new study from uc berkeley finds if a teenager goes to bed late around 11:00 or 12:00 they're at a greater risk for weight gain even if they get the recommended amounts of sleep. researchers followed more than 3,000 young adults and found a late bedtime was associated with an increase in body mass. so for a teenaged girl 5-foot five weighing 132 pounds and going to bed late from the period of adolescence to adulthood, the study found that she'll gain 12 pounds. but while the researchers say sleep duration and exercise did not make a difference, they do say fast food was a factor. if you're going to bed late, you're more like to reach for pizza or french fries than of course for a salad or other healthy option. monica and rick, back over to you. >> thank y

americans are drinking less soda. or pop. or coke. let's just say carbonated soft drinks. numerous surveys have tried to figure out why. farmers have a dog in this fight also as soft drinks are a major demand for high-fructose corn syrup - hfcs. certainly concerns about obesity are a factor. calories and sugar are in typical carbonated beverages. i know we stopped drinking them as an easy way to try to battle unwanted weight. this controversy over hfcs has certainly received ample attention. such health concerns are clear, but i would be surprised if this was all there was to this trend. in fact, i can think of several reasons i seldom see mentioned. first, pop got too expensive in my judgment. the fact that restaurants make more profit from the soda with your meal than the meal has become widely known, and resented, at least by me. besides, if we want to flaunt our wealth with an expensive beverage, coffee has locked up that market segment. second, the soon to be top drink choice - bottled water has a real convenience feature: you don't have to have a refrigerator. water

but the soda companies hated it. that meant that fewer people would be mindlessly drinking a quart or a gallon of sugary drinks. and they tried very much to arrange some sort of negotiated settlement with us. and so we had discussions with them. we'll talk to anybody. but at the end, nothing that they promised looked like it was gonna be as effective and as verifiable. and so they said, you know, "well, in that case, we're gonna take these donations we might've given to new york city, and we're gonna send it somewhere else." and sure enough, later on, a bunch of money appeared in chicago, and they withdrew their portion-cap proposal. >> was that something of a bribe? a legal bribe, maybe? that's how it appeared in your book, i would say. >> i wouldn't describe it as a bribe. i would say, you know, that companies donate money to all sorts of people to get, you know, some friendly treatment. but this is something that mike bloomberg wasn't gonna do. in the end -- >> as a businessman he wasn't gonna do it, and as a poli
