soledad o'brien issen stading by at riverside park. ke it away, tell us what you are expecting to see. >> we're at the firefighters memorial, about eight miles north of your location at ground zero. in 1913 they dedicated this quite beautiful memorial structure here. it's wonderful. it has two sculptures. one says sacrifice and one says duty. it's been a place where after the first anniversary of the attacks firefighters started to come to try to honor their dead, the 343 firefighters who lost their lives in 9/11. they wanted a place, they said, where there would nobody speeches, no politicians, that it would be simple, a way to remember people who gave up everything, who made the ultimate sacrifice because they believed very strongly in doing their job. trying to rescue people. once again, they will come here today to have a memorial. noidz longer a small memorial because it's the tenth anniversary and because they really are not invited to where you are at ground zero. we're expecting maybe thousands of people to come here at 100th st

i want to join soledad o'brien once again standing by with one of the survivors of this day.d morning to you once again, soledad. >> good morning to you. over my shoulder they are starting to lay out the flags for the firefighters memorial celebration that will happen here. it will begin in a couple hours. they had the first wreath laying not long ago. they put those flags up, one to represent each firefighter, 343 who lost a life on 9/11. nicole simpson, though, is a survivor. she was working on the 73rd floor of tower two when the first plane hit tower one. she started making her way out of the building, going out the stairs. after that, of course, the story changes. nice to have you, thanks for talking with us. >> thank you. >> they made an announcement that the building was secure and started telling everybody to go back up to their offices. you started heading back upstairs. what happened? >> they made at announcement but didn't indicate we could go back upstairs. if it was secure i didn't have to evacuate at that time. when we got to the 44th floor, my two assistants an

soledad o'brien joins us now. soledad, is the memorial still going on there? >> reporter: you know, it's interesting. the memorial itself has wrapped up, but what we have here are firefighters who have driven in, in many cases, on their motorcycles to be part of the celebration here. it's almost remarkable. they did this convoy of motorcycles right down riverside drive, where you're right, anderson, about eight miles north of where you are. so after the memorial ended and many of the firefighters from the fdny went off to church, folks from, you know, every state, literally every single state, plus i've seen firefighters from germany and from france and canada and australia, are here and taking an opportunity to check out the firefighters memorial, which is really the centerpiece of the event that was here today is remarkable. we wanted to tell the story today of a woman named regina wilson, a firefighter whose story we tell in a document that we have airing tonight at 10:00 p.m. on cnn. we wanted to look at the role of women at ground zero who served and as p
