the story from wabc's marcus solis. >> reporter: it was a commute to work unlike any other in john vescio'sior investigator was caught in a fiery gas station crash that engulfed his unmarked department vehicle. it happened while vescio was gassing up at a mobil station along the hutchinson river parkway. vescio says he remembers hearing a speeding car. >> i actually went to look up and see what was going on, and next thing i knew, the pump was coming down on top of me. >> reporter: the unidentified driver was having a medical emergency in diabetic shock when he attempted to pull off at the gas station which sits in between the northbound and southbound lanes. the impact knocks the pump on to vescio who manages to run away as flames erupt near his legs. after assessing the situation, he returns to rescue the driver which was no easy task. vescio says the 69-year-old was completely unresponsive. >> i got the door open, but you can see that the actual compartment was compressed. you could see the way his legs were tucked under by the seat. his seat belt was on, and he was pretty much helpless.
