there were shell casings that were inside of a car that was registered to solomon pena. those shell casings matched the firearms that were believed to have been used in the multiple shooting incidents here. and so over the course of the two-month investigation, you saw the prosecutors just lay out quite damning evidence against him, to the point of a s.w.a.t. team executing this arrest warrant here earlier this week, and now this investigation is ongoing. the attorney general here, in the state of new mexico, there was a shooting potentially at his office that has not been directly linked to these four other incidents here, so this is an ongoing investigation. but one that clearly prosecutors felt good about in order to get to the point of executing this arrest. >> vaughn hillyard, as you mentioned you will keep an update on the court appearance and come back when you know more. >>> danny, let me go to you. police have made clear that they believe pena's intention was to seriously injure or to kill somebody here. they say that, serious injury or death seemed to have been

i just want to get your first reaction to the solomon pena news. just to understand what it has been like for democratic lawmakers in the state of new mexico and how you are feeling right now, tonight. we >> well, thank you, alex, for having me. i'm really grateful to be here to talk about this topic. i will tell you tonight i am feeling, and i know my colleagues especially my colleagues who experience actual bullets through their houses are feeling extremely relieved at the quick and decisive action of our local law enforcement officials, albuquerque police department, state police here in new mexico. but for me, as somebody who has been on the frontlines of dealing with threats and now we are seeing actual acts of violence against elected officials here in the state, particularly as a result of election denialism and the lies and the disinformation and myths that have provided a certain sector of our population over the last couple of years, i am deeply concerned because you can see right now from the rhetoric that was leading up to the 2020 elec

solomon pena's attorney says at this point the charges against her client are merely accusations. the details on that. >> we are on the record on solomon pena -- >> reporter: solomon pena, wearing a red jump suit shackled, appearing in front of a judge for the first time. >> your attorney will be calling you at the podium behind you. >> reporter: he gave thumbs up in response to the judge and the court ruled the case will move to district court. the 2020 election denier and former republican candidate for the new mexico state house is accused of hiring four other men to shoot at the homes of democratically elected state leaders. >> we have the electronic communications. we have a significant amount of evidence and we're very confident in our case moving forward. >> reporter: according to the arrest warrant affidavit, pena provided, quote, firearms and cash payments and personally participated in at least one shooting. the arrest warrant included images from the phone, photos sent to pena. it shows pena with one of the four suspected shooters who was arrested that had a gun police

my name is solomon pena. can i speak with debby o'malley. >> reporter: solomon pena went to her daughter's address and then her home a month before the shooting. this is him on the other side of the fence. >> he seemed agitated. he seemed a little aggressive to me. i didn't consider him a threat then but he was upset that he had lost the election. >> reporter: police arrested him monday in connection with a string of what they call politically motivated shootings of four democratic leaders in new mexico. no one was injured. >> it is believed that he is the mastermind that was behind this. >> reporter: police say he's suspected of hiring a contractor for cash to commit at least two of the four shootings, from december 4th to january 3rd. pena was a republican candidate for statehouse seat and he spent years in prison for burglary and larceny. the judge allowed the convicted felon to be on the ground calling it unconstitutional to allow pena the denial to serve. >> he lost in november by a landslide then accuse

solomon pena, an election denier, who spread trump's big lie. he ran for new mexico state houses a republican in november. after losing, fight nearly 50 points, he baselessly claim the election was rigged. prosecutors say, he then paid for men to carry out a series of politically motivated, violent attacks. firing multiple shots, into the homes of to local democratic county commissioners, and two democratic state senators. one of whom, state senator, linda lopez, we had on the show last night. one bullet was fired into the benefit of a senator's ten-year-old daughter who was in bed at the time. thankfully, and miraculously, no one was injured in the shootings. one of the commissioners, who was targeted, told vaughn hillyard how terrified she was by the right-wing attack. >> the first thing i thought is, i thought of my grandkids. they could have been staying the night, or something like that. immediately, i was grateful we had this wall, which is what stop them. it saddens me, this is happening in our country. clearly, we can see it all over. th
