solomon r. guggenheim museum. there frank lloyd wright building that now houses the guggenheim collection opened in 1959 here in new york. and it's now a landmark architectural gem. to have this cylindrical building that was at the time called an inverted cupcake, a washing machine, you name it, it was such a different space for showing art. we're nestled here on central park. that was very much because of frank lloyd wright and this desire to match the bustle of the city that he could not escape with nature. in 1943, when frank lloyd wright was commissioned to be the architect for a permanent home for solomon r. guggenheim's collection, he was older in his career. he had already established this body of architecture of homes and buildings that were more in tune with nature, that were very much thoughtful about how space evolved within the home or the building. and our founding director, hilla rebay, must have seen something in his progressive architecture to write to him saying that she was looking for this fighte
