i work with the soma residential district, and i'm a resident of district of soma. i think the historic preservation and being able to acquire this site is really important as a comprehensive and unique strategy for addressing displacement of the filipino community, but i think working families in general in san francisco, so we really support this project moving forward. you know, i just want to say, i didn't grow up here. i've been in the city for 15 years, but as someone who grew up in the midwest, as a filipino who grew up in the midwest, the bay area has always symbolized as a bastion for filipino community. i used to work in worker's rights advocacy work at the filipino rights community center, and i used to work with low wage workers who were facing all types of exploitation. as an example of the legacy that gran oriente filipino and the people that built that place and what it means to the community and what it means to the filipino community in general here in the bay area and in san francisco, a lot of our clients who experienced wage theft from other part

and the soma district. that was around 2016 and 17. we came with a plan introducing a mid block break that connected the fulsome neighbors to the harrison neighbors and presented a design. we worked on the modern type of building that you see there on the lower right, didn't seem to reflect the neighborhood. the building should be more in context with the warehouse and the industrial style of soma, so introduced stone based masonry and some large format openings, more appropriate of a warehouse style building. the plan featured here, the yellow shows units. the blue are ground level commercial spaces with accessory residential and the red represent common areas. the mid block break is 30 feet wide and it connects these two neighborhoods and all these people, which are all right now disparate and unconnected and we feel our project with the mid block break is going to serve to connect all these different neighbors and new neighbors. this shows design features. this is the entrance on harrison to the mid block break. so it's very wide, w

so this was a part of the promise of the western soma plan to recognize the historic contributions ofeather community in particular, as well as the lgbtq community to the development of the western soma neighborhood, with bars ranging from the stud to the eagle to so many iconic venues along with the fulsome street fair, this neighborhood has been made stronger and more interesting because of our leather and lgbt community. after the passage of the western soma plan in 2012, we have been spending quite a bit of time, figuring out what it meant to build out a social cultural district. it's a great concept, but it's making it into a living breathing district, so it's not just a series of monuments and street signs. it's challenging, how do we grow small business that cater to this community? how do we build housing and services to ensure that members of the community continue to live in western south market. so this process has been with the community for several years, but in particular the community has been meeting in ernest over the last 18 months to try to bring this to fruition. i

we have ilene and somas here from the department of public health. what i was looking to hear when i provided direction to the department head on what we wanted to hear in today's policy discussion is we are looking for metrics. we are looking for key indicators about street cleanliness, how it has changed over time and i think you gave a thorough prose -- presentation about the changes. i'm grateful that we have a department that's flexible enough to make those types of changes. it's not ridged. i've spoken with colleagues to understand their concerns around this issue and i'm going to put out some information here. they have expressed the following specific concerns to me. first, what we did was we polled supervisor's offices and here's what my colleagues have listed as important to them, human waste, needles, geographic equity in street cleaning across the entire city, addressing the causes of dirty streets, trash can be accessible -- trash cans accessibility and location, concerns about people recycling or, quote, canning. going through other peo

grew up in the mission and lived in the soma for about 13, 14 years. i ran a rack center for kids for about 15 of those years down on 6th street, and over the years, i've seen developers come in, and being that we were a nonprofit, they would constantly come in, and they have to do their due diligence and stuff like that. so i became kind of wary of people over the years. i got to know tidewater and the people there. i didn't feel that way with them. i've worked with them on a number of projects. now i'm a full-time artist that still lives in san francisco, and that is partly because they support me, and they've been there. and i see them work on a number of projects, and they're smart people, and they do care about the community. and so when i hear the things being brought up, i don't think it's something that they just took in one ear and let go out the other. i do believe they listen, i do believe they hire smart people that try to work on solutions. so i believe they have character, outstanding character, and i support this. i've seen a number of m
