been just over two years since san francisco central subway tunnel opened to the public connecting soman. now muni is having to shut it down temporarily to fix a water leak. kenny choi explains what businesses in chinatown are concerned about during and after the closure. >> reporter: ed su hears from residents and businesses in chinatown about problems impacting the commute. >> there is suppose to be two elevators, but only one is working all the time. the other one is broken. >> reporter: su is chairman of the chinatown merchants association. >> if you need to take the elevator, you need to go all the way down to the broken elevators in order to hit the button. >> reporter: central the central subway opened in 2023, he says service disruptions from ongoing water leaks, which they tried and failed to address last year, have negatively impacted ridership and local business. but he believes the water leaks are just a part of the larger problem, including functioning elevators and escalators, taking riders to the platform more than 100 feet below street level. >> after they shut down this

francisco has been cracking down on drug dealing and use in longtime hotspots like the tenderloin n and soma. but some are now asking whether those crackdowns are just pushing the problem into other neighborhoods, like the mission. one e restaura owner tells us the mission has always had its challenges, but recently, it seems things are only getting worse. what we've seen happen in the last couple of years is an increase in illegal activity, and specifically the dealing and using of hard drugs. and that's led to all kinds of problems. just in the last ten days, we've had folks come into the restaurant and be highly disruptive to guests and staff yelling and screaming. mayor daniel lurie says that he has some he has some of the same concerns. the mayor says his message is that anyone dealing drugs in san francisco will be found and prosecuted. let's take you outside and give you a live look at oakland, where city leaders are promising a bigger and better chinatown lunar new year parade than ever before. this is video from last year's parade. since the year of the snake, you see snake and drag

after the city cleared out nearby willow street in the tenderloin and sixth street in the soma district. the police chief expects more operations like this wherever they're needed. the bottom line to this is we're going to take action. and it's not like we haven't taken action. but displacement is a huge problem. the chief says there were so many arrests, they're still tallying all the various charges. some people were arrested for drug dealing, others for possession or warrants related to prior arrests. sentencing today for an east bay pastor c convictedf sex crimes, victor hernandez pineda is the former pastor at a spanish languguage pentecostal church in richmond. richmond police arrested hernandez pineda back in december. investigators say he sexually assaulted an underage member of his congregation many times. his charges include sexual assault of a child and kidnaping. hernandez pineda was sentenced today to seven years in prison. he was also ordered to register as a tier three sex offender, which means he'll be onhe registry for life and cannot petition to have his name removed.
