this is the area in somerset county. those people are reporting hearing and feeling this earthquake here again two miles north of bernardsville. that's where it hit. we are told by a u.s. geological survey a 2.5 magnitude earthquake that hit at 3:41 this morning, clearly enough to scar people -- to scare people. people are sweating us at abc7ny. kesha said she felt it in jefferson township. the whole house shook. donna tweeted saying they felt it in rockaway, new jersey. the house shook for a few seconds. let's hear what people who came to the train station tell me what they felt. >> you could see movement small stuff. crazy. >> all of a sudden, the house shook for maybe three, four seconds. i didn't know what was happening. i thought a tree fell. no tree down, it must have been an earthquake. >> reporter: now emergency officials are saying even though no immediate damage was reported, now that the sun is up, they want homeowners and business owners to check their property, foundations, make sure there is no crack to mak

eyewitness news reporter josh einiger is at the scene in warren, somerset county. josh? >> reporter: sandra, let me set the scene for you. we are at the corner of mountain boulevard and mount bethel road where police have it blocked off. they blocked a perimeter seemingly for miles around the scene. it is way up this road up mount bethel road, flashing lights way in the distance. we will show you pictures from instagram. an eyewitness news viewer posted it on instagram. you can see the heavily armed tactical officers warming this neighborhood in the aftermath of this shooting around 1:30. authorities have refused to release any information to us or the community about what did happen there. there is a report of gunfire. there have been a variety of differing stories, conflicting reports whether or not there were shooting victims. we do have an eyewitness who said she heard the gunshots themselves. here is what she had to say. >> i heard a series of loud pops or bangs. i wasn't sure at that time if it sounded like gunshots. a quick quiet then three more. a lot of us are h

and this flash flood warning is still in effect for portions of union and somerset counties. due to all the rain they've had already. this is a cell responsible for the flooding there, now approaching morristown, and troy hills, you but not as intense over the berkeley heights plainfield area and dumping almost 4 inches of rain in about three hours. so they've got flash flooding happening there, and we've got storm reports from across that area right now where they have been seeing all that heavy rain. these are some of the reports. we saw some of the video and pictures from berkeley heights, multiple water rescues under way there. scotch plains roads closed on u.s. 22 between bonnie bern road and mountainsi , 22 is closed between mountain avenue and new providence road because of flash flooding. tropical moisture moving from the south, the axis here over new jersey and the hudson valley and catskills. these showers continue until at least 6:00 or 7:00. they'll start to weaken and dissipate throughout the rest of the evening. left over with sprinkles overnight. we will get so

he was among somerset's most prominent citizens. young john sherman cooper inherited much of his generous spirit from his father. his mother, helen carter, was an educator. according to his siblings, john was their mother's favorite. one of john's brothers said there were three sons in the family, john, john, and john. [laughter] his mother's family boasted of a political pedigree. as a boy growing up on harvey's hill, cooper was an avid reader, reflecting the influence of both parents, and he was an outstanding student. he attended center college and then at his father's suggestion transferred to yale where he compiled an exemplary academic record and captained the basketball team. he graduated from yale in 1923 and then began law school at harvard. everything seemed to be going his way. in 1924, tragedy struck the cooper household. his father suffered a stroke and died. the death of a father is never an easy thing for any family. but besides the personal loss to the coopers, john senior's passing also revealed that the family was

somerset county, we have had reports of significant flooding, in effect until 7:30. the storms have weakened and moved to the north, the waters have not quite receded. this is the cell. it sat over the same area and produced rain over and over again over parts of union county in new jersey. upwards of four inches of rain as reported by our radar, estimated by our radar in a short period of time. there were several reports of flash flooding and u.s. 22 as you saw on the picture was a mess. scotch plains, all lanes are closed between bony burn and mountain avenue. now everything is shifting to the west right out by the delaware water gap, parts of warren county, pike county, pennsylvania, the access of heaviest rain. thankfully it has weakened where you get the significant flooding over union county. high resolution futurecast shows encouraging signs. as we lose the daytime heating, we lose a lot of the fuel in the atmosphere for the storms and i think everything will weaken as we approach sunset. the problem is as we head to later in the week, especially friday, there

we still have a flash flood warning in effe for a small portion of somerset county until 7:30. that cgold possibly be discontinued, but they're still dealing with flooding that happened just a few hours earlier. that storm has moved away from them, but still some residual flooding. look at the top of the rock camera, looks like it's about to pour in midtown right now. but it is not. we have partly sunny skies, very humid, very muggy. 81 degrees feels more like 83, 85 degrees out there. the humidity is a big problem. but that's part of the recipe for these intense thunderstorms. a north to south axis. we have a boundary providing instability, tropical moisture from the south and thus these downpours. and even the sun at times sort ofl?parking and addg fuel to the fire. union and s erset county is gone and just about over with now. just a couple sprinkles. but see how it kind of sat over the same spot along route 78 for a couple of hours today, and that's why they saw the intense ooding. it didn't move very much attall. then it started to move, and weaken. these storms left over

a flash flood warning for somerset thankfully the union county has been allowed to expire because the waters are receding there. a lot of the energy is being transferred to the west. warren county and parts of the catskills, parts of sullivan to western ulster county getting heavier rainfall. this is the cell finally beginning to weaken as it traverses parts of morris county. this was over part of the same areas for hours on end dropping up to 4 inches of rain on u.s. 22 in western parts of union, extreme eastern parts of somerset and that's why we had so many flooding reports. south and west of mansfield, not far from the pennsylvania border moving into pike county, pennsylvania. you can expect minor flooding there as well. a lot of moisture over the eastern part of the country. a big moisture pump from the gulf of mexico. eventually this will be concentrated on a frontal system during the day friday. that front will be stalled over the tri-state region. in the meantime, everything west of the city will weaken when we lose the daytime heating. during the day tomorrow, not expecting w
